  1. You make some interesting points (though the slavery analogy seems really off-base to me...I would save that for a thread about BIRTH OF A NATION. LOL)

This is the one comment you wrote I think should be discussed more:

"...many think they have the information and explanation most of what was initially posted in response to my initial post..."

I think this happens because posters identify very strongly with the TCM brand and they like to think they have studied up on the way the channel operates. Some of them have posted or emailed directly with TCM personnel or attended the Classic Film Festival. Probably some of them will go on the upcoming cruise with R.O., so they feel as if they can speak a bit more knowingly about the business side of the channel. There's nothing wrong with that.

Folks should always ensure that the most up-to-date and accurate information is posted. And I think most of them do come back and edit or add a new post when they learn that they have been in error. If it's just someone guessing, then that needs to be clearly stated.

Opinions tend to be obvious. LOL In a perfect posting environment, facts should be properly attributed whenever possible.

  2. IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU is one of my favorites...but then, I am biased in favor of Judy Holliday...still, I think it's a very sharp satire and very charmingly done.

You mentioned Sheree North in another post. She did seem to get the Fox leftovers. Interestingly, she experienced a career resurgence in westerns in the 70s. Burt Lancaster hired her for LAWMAN in which she has a very good role as his on-again/off-again girlfriend; and John Wayne gave her a memorable part as a woman of ill-repute in THE SHOOTIST. Her career would increasingly turn to television in the late 70s and 80s. I think she was very talented and had a spiritual presence that other sexpots lacked.

  3. Interestingly, you put the word 'big' in capital letters in your thread header. It was as if TCM had done something terribly wrong, like it had committed a major crime against its viewers. Now you are saying that TCM defaces the films it shows with a tiny little bug in the lower portion of the screen. I think you are over-stating things.

I hardly notice it. I hardly notice the one on Cinemax either. FMC's logo is a little more flashy and I do notice that one all the time.

I think when you post your first main topic as a rant against TCM saying that you have a BIG complaint, then that is going to get some pretty BIG responses.

  4. One title worth mentioning here, from her time at Fox in the 50s, is BLACK WIDOW. She really wasn't afraid to play against type and shatter audiences' expectations. It's that boldness that I really admire about her.

Another shocking film for her is Warners' STORM WARNING, where she gets drawn into a **** rally. What a risky film, but she pulls it off.

I also like TIGHT SPOT a lot. Her woman against the mob is at-once powerful and riveting to watch.

  5. Love the second paragraph of what you wrote. If we still had the quote feature, I would certainly quote you on that!

The title you mention sounds intriguing.

I know very little about 3-D, so I appreciate all the comments on here as I find it educational. :)

  6. *Meg Ryan* has two new film projects. She has been signed to star in LONG TIME GONE, based on April Stevens' novel 'Angel Angel.' It will be released next year. Also, the actress is filming LIVES OF THE SAINTS, a drama based on Nino Ricci's book.

  7. I think Warners' musical film unit was probably inferior to MGM's in the 50s, but at least they tried. LOL

Howard Hughes seemed to be more interested in film noir and westerns at RKO. TWO TICKETS TO BROADWAY seems to be an exception to the rule as an RKO musical from the early 50s where considerable expense was undertaken and all the stops pulled out.

  9. Classic titles are being reissued in 3-D. By classic I am using today's Hollywood idea of classic (TITANIC, LION KING, HALLOWEEN).

New films are also being produced in 3-D. What is the reason for this? Will it help boost the film capital's fortunes at the box office in these financially-challenging times?

  10. I wouldn't dumb-down a view of the masses. Plenty of average movie viewers have seen KITTY FOYLE over the years or some of Ginger's Fox releases on FMC and home video.

Sometimes, the non-dance scenes of those pictures she made with Fred are a bit embarrassing due to the lack of plausible storyline and cheaper production values at RKO compared with Fox and MGM. In fact, after viewing BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY, it was my extreme wish that their earlier musicals had been done at MGM...how much more lavish they would have been! Some of the early ones if done by L.B. Mayer would probably have been in color like the Nelson-MacDonald ones were. RKO cheated us. LOL

  11. There may be someone at this very moment who would say exactly what you have said about Gene Nelson but apply it to Gene Kelly. If a person is not exposed to the classics, then they don't know these people existed and how talented they were.

Warners seems to have invested a lot in Gene Nelson's career. He was their Gene Kelly. Universal had Donald O'Connor. Add in Paramount's Bing Crosby, 20th's Dan Dailey and Sam Goldwyn's Danny Kaye. These were the song and dance men of that generation.
