Heist films always give you resolution as to what happens to each protaganist. Its a major part of what makes heist films a great genre to build a film around.
This can also be said for war films. Why spend all that time following the individual stories of a group of soldiers, for all of them to drop out of sight and the last half hour to be just about the end/demise of only one of them? It doesn't make sense.
These specific genres tell a group of stories, not just one person's story.

I think the way the game is played, has evolved. Some of us do two double features, meaning we make a double feature connecting on to the previously mentioned title, then make a second double feature with our second title. That still applies to what you said, because the second title is still of the player's choosing.
