  1. Yes, good topic. Frances Marion deserves a month-long retrospective on TCM. The TCM programmers often go a bit too general, and try to cover a variety of female writers and directors when they do these special series. But in her case, a whole series devoted to her writing would be very good because she did so much and there's so much to say about her and the stories that she contributed.

    I particularly admire the writing in MIN AND BILL...she was able to present a solid blueprint for Marie Dressler's character and Dressler just ran with it. The woman in that picture seems like a realistic working class gal who is made to suffer the indignities of life-- some of these issues caused by her own stubbornness and some of it caused by the ape of a man she's stuck with (played by Wallace Beery). That final sequence where she sees her daughter off on the pier, then faces arrest for murder is just so powerful. It encompasses everything a mother would do to protect her daughter's happiness. If Frances Marion did not fully understand this type of character, then Dressler wouldn't have known what to do with it, which of course led to an Oscar.
