Yves Montand (1921-1991). Started out as a French crooner of romantic songs before getting into films. His dramatic breakthrough or revelation may have come with H.G. Couzot's 1953, The Wages of Fear. My favourite Montand performances are Wages, La Guerre Est Finie (1966), Grand Prix (1966), Manon of the Spring (1986) and Jean de Florette (1986).

I'm crying foul! I was up the entire night doing searches for Young Torless and making notations and I simply cannot believe that it did not make the top ten Tor Searches. Unless TCM did not update its web site and these results are stale? How can we be assured that the top ten searches are the most current top ten searches? We need to launch a study right away.

Barton you do come up with the scoops! I hope that they take the opportunity to show some of the marvellous indie films that women have been making in the past twenty years. There are dozens of titles that received critical acclaim but very little subsequent exposure on television.

Lenore Aubert who played Dr. Sandra Mornay in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). The perfect exotic glam foil for Lou. Hilarious that she was attracted to him because of his brain. Aubert had a certain Hedy Lamarr quality about her. Unfortunately she was never really able to break through in Hollywood and retired not long after her two A&C movies.

Not sure if this has been mentioned here, or not (too lazy to check I suppose!). A Clockwork Orange (1971) directed by Stanley Kubrick. Banned in England until only quite recently. Or withdrawn in England might be the better term. I had heard that it was Kubrick himself that had this film withdrawn out of fear of copycat crimes in England. On a side note, recently departed Warren Clarke as Dim is just fantastic in this film. Anyone who has seen Clarke on British television in various series will know what a departure 'Dim' must have been for him from his real self. I saw him on stage in London in a play where he portrayed Churchill.

Jean Renoir's Madame Bovary (1934). A copy with English subtitles would be nice.

Well, we'll just see if this TOR search thing really works. I've been doing a search of Young Torless all day long. Once an hour. I've set my alarm clock to go off every half an hour throughout the night. That way I will be able to hit search on Young Torless a lot more times. I'm making note of how many times in a binder. If the search is really working I expect to see this in the top ten tomorrow.

This reminds me that I rode a monorail shuttle with Richard Chamberlain at Gatwick. We were the only ones on it. He had enough bags for an army. He said he was visiting friends for just a few days! I had but hat point introduced myself and said that I had worked on one of his films in Canada. I couldn't remember the name of it at the time which was a tad embarrassing so I offered the director's name. He was able to guess which one it was. And I missed my opportunity to say that I once had lunch with another Musketeer Michael York!

I guess they were watching in black and white.

John Howard Davies (1939-2011) the British child actor and star of Oliver Twist, The Rocking Horse Winner, and Tom Brown's Schooldays went on to have a hugely prolific career as a producer and director of drama for the BBC.
