Given the recent round of Mankiewicz-bashing going on elsewhere here, I thought I'd post a link to this:
http://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/3428267
This is a new interview Ben Mankiewicz has done for the podcast THE NEW HOLLYWOOD. There's some interesting stuff here about Norman Lloyd, Herman and Joseph Mankiewicz, the TCM Classic Film Festival and more.
Hello Barton,
Here is the link to the second part of that very good Ben Mankiewicz interview ....

I had to do it out of curiosity. I hadn't seen it since I was about ten years old.
Bedtime For Bonzo (1951) the Frederick de Cordova film - the producer of Johny Carson's Tonight Show and starring the POTUS himself, Ronald Reagan.
It was just bloody awful from start to finish. When Reagan climbs out on the ledge of a building at the start of the film to rescue the chimp you just wish he would fall to his death and it would all end right there.
Unfortunately it doesn't end right here and what follows is just plainly badly written and badly performed gags consisting mostly of the tried variety of mistaken assumptions.
Just to torture my wife further we then watched its sequel, Bonzo Goes to College (1952). It wasn't half as bad. Perhaps because it was simply utterly ridiculous and didn't try to hide that fact. Plus it had much better actors in it. No Ronald Reagan for starters.

Is CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA (1946) the one with Vivien Leigh as Cleopatra?
Yes it is. Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains. I wasn't a big fan of this one but now I must have another look.

Night and the City is set in London. Therefore it can't be real noir.

But didn't the French invent noir?

Mary Astor.
She received a supporting actress Oscar for The Great Lie (1941). I really thought this was a case of billing for she really had a lead role in that film.
In any event. Here are some other Mary Astor performances that I rather enjoyed. I'm sure there are many more.
Dodsworth (1936)
The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
The Palm Beach Story (1942)
Act of Violence (1948)
Hush ... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)

Btw DGF, and regarding this comment of yours...
So, If I'd change my name to say somethin' like, "Wink Dargodale", ya think I might still have a chance at a second career hosting "Wheel of Fortune" after Sajak hangs it up for good???

Wink Dargodale, chick magnate. Has a real ring to it.

Oh no, it's him. The character he is playing is only 14 or so. Check it out on wikipedia if you doubt me.

Wow. Thanks for that, Lorna. I can't wait to see that film again now.
I had occasion to speak with Anthony Harvey on the telephone about 25 years ago now. I was organizing a tribute event for someone whom he had worked with in the 1950's in England. He was utterly charming and very enthusiastic about lending his support.
His They Might Be Giants is one of my favourite films. It doesn't get played often enough.

HAH!
I had NO IDEA Anthony Harvey edited DR. STRANGELOVE: man, he was a Jack of all Trades- I also recall him being quite good as Cleopatra's scheming, effete brother in 1946's CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA.
Do you think that acting credit belongs to the same Anthony Harvey? He would have been 14 at the time they shot that film.
The imdb often gets different people combined in error.
-
it's kind of astounding that DR. STRANGELOVE was not nominated for film editing that year, but SWEET CHARLOTTE was. (and I know film editing is about more than just the length of the film; but it is ironic given that one of the biggest faults of SWEET CHARLOTTE is that it is ridiculously too long (well over two hours*!)
*looked it up: it's 2 hrs. 13 mins. which, while not "well over" two hours is still about 35 minutes too long.
Astounding, yes. But as in most of these popularity contests it often comes down to people voting for the familiar. Anthony Harvey was a British editor at the time. He had an amazing career post Strangelove and directed Katharine Hepburn in a few things.

THAT NIGHT IN RIO is a musical, and as such, takes place mostly in a nightclub/casino. It is a remake.of.FOLIES.BERGERE, and has a game cast.which lncludes Don.Ameche, Alice Faye and Carmen Miranda.....plus glorious Technicolor.
I wonder if it's going to be the polished floor studio look of a nightclub, or something a bit more down to grit and earth?
I don't mind the polished floor South American or Arabian Nights forays as it adds a certain cheese factor to these films.

Well, if seems TCMs recent theme, Tor Johnson, Swashbuckler has seen several of those films spike into the latest Top Ten:
1. THE TORSICAN BROTHERS
2. THE MARK OF TORRO

4.
5. THE FOXES OF TORROW
6. THE FLAME AND THE TORRO

9. THE SISTORS
10. TOREVER AMBER
Thank you, thank you. I couldn't start my day without knowing this.

I think we need a thread called
Top 10 most-bumped titles on the TCM messageboard
lol.
The double agent keeps it humming.
Our P*** Galore rules. Doing a marvellous job. LOL

I'm surprised Trog didn't make the top ten! (we had a party last night and we were up late cleaning up and Trog was on,,,, wow, Joan must of really needed the money.)
She was reduced to taking empty Pepsi bottles back for the deposits at that time.

I thought Marayat Andriane as Maily, Frenchy's girl in The Sand Pebbles was very good.
I don't know, but I suspect her imdb credits are screwed up and they have mixed her up with the writer of Emmanuelle.

Right, Mr. Gorman. Today's audience will be much more familiar with Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha (and Serena) on BEWITCHED than with in any of her dramatic work in film or on television. At one point BEWITCHED was the highest rated show on NIck At Nite.
I've sought out her work on YouTube because I'm a fan of BEWITCHED.
I will admit to owning 2 great books written by Herbie J. Pilato: Bewitched Forever: The Immortal Companion to Television's Most Magical Supernatural Situation Comedy and Twitch Upon a Star: The Bewitched Life and Career of Elizabeth Montgomery.
I recommend these books to fans of BEWITCHED and Elizabeth Montgomery.
How much does Bewitched owe to Bell, Book and Candle?

Here's two more ...
Hand In the Trap (1961) Leopoldo Torre Nilsson (no relation to TJ)
The Fall Of the House of Usher (1928) Jean Epstein

"Sexy, baby!"
- Mike Myers, Austin Powers

" 'Ello, Guv'nah! "
(...'ow..err..HOW was THAT, Bogie?!)

Just lovely, tell your mother.

One of them is the unrated version, with Tor and Deborah Kerr on the beach. Too grisy to even imagine.
Yes, I hear that when the surf receded Deborah was buried under the sand and Tor had to give mouth to mouth.

Wasn't that about an Italian mouse?
That's the new Vole movie El Topo Gigio. Quick, who's going to get there first!!
-
Damn you Bogie, this is far and away my number one pick but you beat me to it. Just for that, NO ice cream and strawberries for dessert tonight.

"Strawberries ...ah, that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes. They even laughed at me in Buffalo."

Your reference to George Cole (who turned 90 in April) reminded me of the movie Flesh and Blood (1951), which I saw once on television decades ago and long to see again.
I will have to look out for that one. Never seen it myself. Great cast.
I've always had a soft spot for George Cole. Remarkable television career in Britain. His relationship with Alastair Sim was very heartwarming. Sim took him under his wing if I am not mistaken.
-
Well..shucks Bogie. I wouldn't necessarily say "incredibly" here...but I suppose I t'wren't too bad back in the day, I guess!
LOL

"You can't lie to the close-up lens, baby"

Then lucky me, Mr.R.
When I first met my wife, she immediately reminded me of Betty Rubble.
In fact, here's a picture of us taken on our wedding day 24 years ago. See what YOU think here...

Holly Hunter with some incredibly handsome dude?

We need more Richard Widmark films
