1982 8. Le Beau Mariage (1982) Eric Rohmer, France Much lauded Eric Rohmer film that didn’t quite do it for me. The main character is a whiny, self-centred young woman who is on the hunt for a husband. IMO this works best when the comedy is a bit a bit broader. and I've also seen … Heart, Beating In the Dark (1982) Shunichi Nagasaki, Japan Not my cup of tea. IMO an amateurish, pointless, pretentious mess.

Monday, April 19 8 p.m. Oliver! (1968). As musicals go, this one is very good.

I'm ashamed to say that I teased Shatner from afar when he was having a smoke break while shooting a commercial at my local Loblaws. He did them for years and years and I'm guessing that I saw him about 1970.

I'm very impressed by Cagney talking about people he admires from different walks of life that I have never heard of. The whole book shows just how well grounded he was.

Sunday, April 18/19 2:15 p.m. Mystery Street (1950). John Sturges crime noir. 2:45 a.m. The Night of the Iguana (1964). I saw this on stage just pre-pandemic in London with Clive Owen. He was good but the film works much better. It is hard to contour the exotic location on a stage.

Further proof that James Cagney could do anything well. The first chapters about growing up in NYC are especially good. Recommended.

Thursday, April 15 4:15 p.m. Life With Father (1947). William Powell cracks me up every time I see this film.

1981 The Aviator’s Wife (1981) Eric Rohmer, France A pleasant enough way to spend 90 minutes but I’m not the super fan of Rohmer that some are. I thought Anne-Laure Meury who plays the teenage girl the protagonist meets in the park was very good.

Wednesday, April 14 10 p.m. The Ladykillers (1955). Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom .. but Katie Johnson steals the film.

Tuesday, April 13 1:45 p.m. Julius Caesar (1953). Joseph L. Mankiewicz pulls this together into a fine film.

Monday, April 12 12:30 p.m. It Happened Tomorrow (1944). Rene Clair film with Dick Powell and Linda Darnell.

Tim McIntire (1944-1986), son of Jeanette Nolan and John McIntre. When I saw him in American Hot Wax (1978) I thought boy, wouldn't he make a really good Orson Welles. He had the look AND the voice. I've just about finished Joh Karp's excellent book, Orson Welles's Last Movie - The Making of the Other Side of the Wind and in it he mentions the speculation that Tim McIntire was the illegitimate son of Orson Welles!

Sunday, April 11/12 12:30 a.m. Inherit the Wind (1960). Hard to imagine that there was a time not long ago when people did not believe in evolution. Actually they might as well remake it as a 2021 film.

Saturday, April 10 8 p.m. Hud (1962). The new film To Olivia (2021) covers Patricia Neal making this film.

Friday, April 9/10 12:45 a.m. Henry V (1944). Laurence Olivier film that was up for the 1946 Oscars.

Thursday, April 8 8 p.m. The Guns of Navarone (1961). The cast really elevate this WWII thriller.
