Saturday, October 3
Well, we are now into October. I wonder if there will be any surprises?

5:15 a.m. The Relaxed Wife (1957). The modern miracle of tranquillizers help the housewife deal with stress.

10 a.m. Popeye: Baby Wants a Bottleship (1942).

8 p.m. Lawrence of Arabia (1962). A great film IMO and Omar Shariff is outstanding.

Right, but it does list showings beyond October 29th, the farthest we can look ahead in the Daily Schedules tab. So the content for November and December is still there on the new website, just not viewable to us.
Maybe the advance scheduling will reappear at some point just as the Search window did??

Friday, October 2

7:45 a.m. The Big Store (1941). An underrated Marx Brothers IMO.
-
Thursday, October 1

8 p.m. La Strada (1954). I haven’t seen this Federico Fellini film in ages. Giulietta Masina and Anthony Quinn are both excellent in it.

Wednesday, September 30

6 a.m. Wasp (2003). According to the imdb this is a 26 minute short subject that won an Academy Award.

6:30 a.m. XXY (2007). Argentinian film with Ricardo Darin.

8:15 a.m. My American Cousin (1986). A quaint little Canadian film. Not to be confused with Our American Cousin, the play Lincoln attended at the Ford theatre.

8 p.m. Stand and Deliver (1988). With Edward James Olmos.

Women Make Film

4 a.m. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). Not an easy going film by any means but I really liked it. The kids playing Kevin as he grows up are very good. Replaced in Canada with The Power (1968) directed by Byron Haskin.

A Pilot Returns (1942) Roberto Rossellini, Italy.
I expected a bit more from this film about a downed pilot who escapes captivity but it was a bit of a bore. IMO this was mainly due to Massimo Girotti’s impression of a chiseled wooden statue. There are some nice crowd sequences with refugees but the music is very repetitious. I did enjoy the chance to see an Italian bomber which is very narrow and has the co-pilot seated behind the pilot. A curiosity.

Thanks to the Criterion Channel, I was able to rewatch Tom Jones (1963) a few nights ago. What a fun, beautiful film. Gorgeous cinematography, costumes, and music.
Last night I watched Around the World in 80 Days (1956) for the first time. Another fun movie with outstanding visuals and music, not to mention all of the stars throughout.
I'd love to see both of these on the big screen too, which is the only way to truly appreciate them.
If anyone has any interest in the Big Screen Classics, I encourage you to email TCM and give your input. If enough people express certain titles, maybe we can get more of the fun epics rather than Ghost and The Blues Brothers.
The Criterion dvd of Tom Jones is several discs with two versions. The newer director's cut is actually shorter than the original theatrical release. I haven't seen the DC as yet though.

Do you have a region free player? Because that is only showing up on Amazon as Region 2. Besides, doesn't Canada usually get Joan Blondell as a replacement for L&H? That's not a bad trade IMHO.
Yes, I bought this box set of (almost) complete works in England and yes I have a couple of region free players. The box set was a bargain too.

Oscar winner, Alex Gibney's 2020 Agents of Chaos which just premiered on HBO. This digs deep into Putin's efforts to manipulate elections and the Trump campaign throwing out the welcome mat.

Laurel and Hardy SOTM.
Will the entire month be replaced in Canada? The Hal Roach films never play north of the 49th. Luckily I have ...

Dorothy Dandridge SOTM

8 p.m. Island In the Sun (1957). Good cast in this one: James Mason, Dorothy Dandridge, Joan Fontaine, Michael Rennie, Stephen Boyd, Harry Belafonte and Joan Collins! Leonard Maltin calls it a misfire but I haven’t seen it.

10 a.m. Popeye: Many Tanks (1942).

2 p.m. Quo Vadis (1951). Nero fiddles while Rome burns. I guess today’s equivalent would see a leader go golfing during a pandemic.

Two crazy Italian science fiction films:

6:45 a.m. War of the Planets (1965)
2:45 p.m. The Wild, Wild Planet (1965)
4:15 a.m. J.C. (1972). Jesus is born again and becomes a biker.

Mickey Rooney’s 100th Birthday Tribute.

4:30 a.m. Killer McCoy (1947). Well you have to hand it to him. Mickey Rooney did just about everything in his career including playing a boxer in this one.

I have to laugh. What has "Courage of Lassie" got to do with women in film? The director and the writer are both men.
Both films have yellow dogs, I suppose.

Tuesday, September 22

6:30 p.m. Brief Encounter (1945). Beautiful David Lean film with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson.

9:15 p.m. Cave of the Yellow Dog (2005). Part of the Women Make Film night. Someone with a sense of humour has replaced this in Canada with Courage of Lassie (1946) by Fred Wilcox.

I haven't tested and verified, but...going with the flow... Same deal as with other tags. It looks/sounds as if external tags are stripped off, for the sake of posters who indiscriminately copy and paste in a bunch of randomly formatted junk directly from other websites (this part I agree with).
The reply box though wouldn't know the difference between something you typed in or something you pasted in from another web page.
If it's a tag, it's gone.
Now maybe one of the nameless faceless people out there could be sweet-talked into putting a "spoiler" button onto that cutesy little text formatting toolbar that so many people had trouble with. But you probably wouldn't want to upset that apple cart.
It was very simply accomplished before. You simply had to type this in your post ...
[Spoiler]
If it was working this sentence would be hidden and you wouldn't be able to read it unless you promoted it to be revealed.
-
You used to be able to type ...
[Spoiler]
.... and then everything that followed would be hidden only to be revealed by a toggle.
That function does not seem to be available any longer?
