I agree and I would add that when I was watching classic films on television when I was young the pre-code era films were simply not available and she did some of her best work in those years. -

I was only a kid when I saw Robert Ryan as Master of Arms, John Claggart in Billy Budd (1962) and at that age could not separate his evil character with the performance. So for many years his great acting in Billy Budd put me off him completely. -
I saw Hugh Herbert in the 1932 Richard Dix, The Lost Squadron and I thought, "oh no, here we go" but was surprised that his part was a dramatic one and in that he was tolerable. IMO, of course.

Sunday, August 23 Bette Davis is bumped for a Olivia De Havilland Memorial Tribute. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind. midnight. The Heiress (1949). One of my favourite De Havilland performances along with The Snake Pit from a year earlier. -
Count yourself lucky you have not seen Ted Lewis in any films.
-
I feel like running out of the room when Ted Lewis comes on - in anything.
-
When he is trying to be funny, Hugh Herbert ruins just about everything he is in. IMO, of course.

Have you seen Luis Bunuel's The Young One (1960). It is sort of Swamp Water meets Baby Doll and Scott plays a real sleaze wanting to get into the knickers of a 14ish year old girl that he is supposed to be looking after. And his performance is really OTT too. Sort of like a peverted Dennis Weaver from Touch of Evil. It is all very bizarre. I saw it at the BFI years ago and could not believe Scott's performance. What was he thinking?

Monday, August 17 Maureen O’Hara 6 a.m. Jamaica Inn (1939). Not the greatest Hitchcock film. With Charles Laughton. -
2013 The Wind Rises (2013) Hayao Miyazaki, Japan [dubbed version] I gave this one another go and took it out of my top ten. Arguably beautifully done it is nonetheless very dry and plodding. As lip sync hardly mattered in this animation I chose to watch the English language version again. Werner Herzog’s voice is instantly recognizable as ‘the German’ but boy he cannot carry a tune.

This is not a national anthem in film post. For many years after the 1976 Montreal Olympics the CBC played the Canadian National Anthem when it signed off. Part of the montage was Greg Joy's Bronze winning high jump at the Olympics. Bronze. My friends and I used to get quite a laugh out of that. Yay. We're number three !!!!
