A friend of mine in Montreal produced a version in 1979. It is listed as The Spirit of Adventure: Night Flight (!979) on the imdb. They call it a TV MOW but it is only 20-odd minutes long and I don't know what kind of release it got, if any. I saw a 35mm print and thought it was quite good. Bo Svenson plays the pilot. I recently saw The Great Waldo Pepper again and not only did I enjoy his performance in that but I was really impressed with the shots of both he and Robert Redford in the old biplanes. Kudos to both actors for not relying on rear screen projection. Hey, I just discovered a copy of The Spirit of Adventure: Night Flight on youtube. It is a very bad print but it will give you some idea. I haven't seen it in 40 years.

I saw Night Flight (1933) a few weeks ago and was really impressed by the "portrait" photography by Oliver Marsh and director, Clarence Brown. The model shots were not very good but the stars looked marvellous. There is one really terrific overhead group shot as everyone looks up at a clock.

Longtime friend Janice Thomson shared a statement on behalf of Carver's family announcing that he died Tuesday in his birthplace of Cranbrook, B.C., -- his favourite place on earth. He was 68. His family says it was a proud moment when he won the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2014. Carver won the 1993 Tony Award for best actor in a musical for his starring role in "Kiss of the Spider Woman." In 1999, he was nominated in the same category for his role in "Parade." He also had film and TV roles in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," "Millennium" and "Due South." "Blessed with many talents and a natural love of theatre, Brent was always known as a first-class performer, unique in the presentation of his craft, delighting audiences through film, TV, stage and concert performances," the family statement said. They said he will be remembered as a kind, gentle and gifted man. "His love of performing was matched only by his zest for life and lifetime devotion to family, friends and treasured pets," the Carver family said. "Thank you to the performing arts community for embracing our Brent and helping him fulfil his dreams with joy in his heart. Brent will be missed." The Stratford Festival, in which Carver performed for nine seasons, said it was devastated by the news. "Brent was an artist who demanded the utmost of himself, opening up his heart to reveal the pain and beauty of life," artistic director Antoni Cimolino said in a statement. Carver performed alongside Christopher Plummer in the festival's New York production of "King Lear" in 2004. His final Stratford performances were in 2017 for "Twelfth Night" and "The School for Scandal." "He was singular: an original in every sense," Cimolino said. "And yet his heart was so big it encompassed us all and made us one." The Stratford news release said Carver is survived by two sisters, two brothers and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The family is to hold a private memorial on Monday. I've seen 7 versions of Les Mis. 1935 by Richard Boleslawski with Fredric March is my favourite. 1934 by Raymond Bernard with Harry Bauer is a close second. It covers just about everything and is really two movies. Then I would lump these together as being 'fair'. They each have some good performances: 1952 by Lewis Milestone with Michael Rennie 1982 by Robert Hossein with Lino Ventura 1995 by Claude Lelouch with Jean-Paul Belmondo 1998 by Bille August with Liam Neeson Then this abomination - 2012 by Tobe Hooper with Hugh Jackman

2011 8. The Monk (2011) Dominik Moll, France It takes place in the late 1500’s at a remote Spanish monastery. Vincent Cassel who was brought to the monastery as an infant orphan has grown up to be the leader. The film starts off really well. It’s very atmospheric and it has many interesting threads. My problem with it was that those disparate threads didn’t really come together and the end was a bit of a mess. But Geraldine Chaplin has a very small part as a mean nun and she is very good.

Thursday, August 6 Burt Lancaster 8 p.m. Elmer Gantry (1960). This is my number 3 Best Actor performance of all time.

Sunday, August 2 Rock Hudson 6 a.m. Winchester 73 (1950). Well there you go. I’ve seen this film 3 times and had forgotten that Rock Hudson is in it. Is that a fake nose or did he have a nose job?

2009 The Reverse (2009) Borys Lankosz, Poland The film takes place in Communist Warsaw of the 1950’s and everyone is spying on everyone and people are carted away in the middle of the night by the secret police. A young woman living in a small apartment with her mother and grandmother works as a poetry editor for the State and longs for a relationship. As Don Adams would say, “missed by that much.” It was okay but not nearly as good as it could have been. It won Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress at the Polish Film Awards.
