4:45 p.m. The Whip Hand (1951). This one sounds bizarre. A lake where fish mysteriously die and a group of former Nazis turned Commies are holed up nearby. Nazis turned Commies? I guess they aren’t too discerning as long as they can be bad.

I've always thought that Mike Todd and Richard Burton resembled each other
And the women who are with them look pretty similar too.

Here Here!! Nobody can weave a story into a song like Gordon Lightfoot. The imagery you can get from the lyrics and the way he sings them can be quite impactful. There are other good ones who can do the same, like James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, Tracy Chapman, Sarah MacLachlin, and John Mayer. I'm sure I'm leaving out others, particularly men and women north of the border but generally speaking, these are the ones that resonate with me first. Burton Cummings of 'The Guess Who' is another good one.
I had to look it up but Tracy Chapman is from Cleveland. Now Alanis Morisette is from Canada. Those two had brilliant first albums IMO.

What state secrets are the governments of Canada and/or the United States trying to protect by not showing any of the "Thin Man" movies on New Year's Eve? I feel sorry for the folks north of me. Does this happen every time a "Thin Man" movie crops up on the TCM schedule? I'll have to check the Canadian schedule to see what you're getting instead. If I lived in Canada and got this station, I'd be disheartened and a little bit ticked that I couldn't watch these funny who-done-its.
OK, the afternoon on Tuesday doesn't look bad, but the evening fare is what TCM showed last year in the States (I think), with "That's Entertainment" and "That's Dancing" and all the ancillary off-shoots of it. Well, as they say, "It's better than a poke in the eye."! I'd still be disappointed if I were a Canuck.
Only TCM would know the answer to this one. They were shown on TCM Canada in the past for I have recorded them. Perhaps another Canadian broadcaster bought the exclusive Canadian TV rights to them since then? It is not a problem with other MGM or Warner films. But Hal Roach films are not shown on TCM Canada.

Didn't know Sutherland was Canadian. I assumed he was British since he got his start on British T.V. series like The Saint. But that was because he moved to Britian to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Roger Moore directed Sutherland's second appearance episode (just saw this a few weeks back). Looks like Sutherland asked Moore to show rough-cuts of this episode to some producers that were planning a movie, The Dirty Dozen. This of course being the break he needed.
Donald is from Montreal. Keifer is Canadian as well. I came to work one day and found him sleeping under my bench. He was just a kid.

Is TCM trying to show some balance this Christmas season?

2 a.m. Satanis, the Devil’s Mass (1970). Documentary about the Church of Satan. Does this church get tax relief?

I thought this was by far the worst version of Little Women that I have seen (not having seen the June Allyson version). It was a complete mess. Saorise Ronan and Emma Watson faired well. Streep did well not to overplay it and become Edna May Oliver. Florence Pugh who was good in Lady MacBeth was appalling.

Thursday, December 26

4:30 p.m. Young Catherine (1991). With Julia Ormand as Catherine the Great. Looks like this was a TV MOW. Replaced in Canada with the Peter Fonda film, The Young Lovers (1964).

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ...
5:30 a.m. The Great Rupert (1950). I thought this one was pretty funny. The sillier it went, the funnier it got. It certainly exceeded my expectations. With Jimmy Durante.
