Movies That Could Have Been Made Today
Dargo replied to LonesomePolecat's topic in General Discussions
Yep, like I said here Vautrin...1937. I've always thought "Chinatown", and while I also just noted isn't historically factual time-wise, would make a get double-bill with "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", and another historically inaccurate(well, it IS a cartoon) BUT very entertaining tale about the machinations of the demise of L.A.'s once extensive rail public transit system. (...and at one time THE most extensive interurban rail transit system in the entire world...many people don't know that, ya know) -
Well GayD, trust me here...you'd probably find them MUCH less "fascinating" after running over a few large ones and having them getting caught under your car while driving on picturesque AZ Hwy 89A during heavy crosswinds between Sedona and Cottonwood, and like what has happened to me more than a few times. (...they're just about like deer...they come out of nowhere and sometimes you just can't avoid 'em)

Very very true, Arturo, But, ya wanna know what would REALLY would have added to the thrills of Indiana's exploits? Uh-huh, a motorcycle jump over a barbwire fence!!! LOL (...sorry, but I just couldn't resist bringing up again my oh so valid earlier point about "The Great Escape" not being true to history ALSO)

Movies That Could Have Been Made Today
Dargo replied to LonesomePolecat's topic in General Discussions
So, lemme get this straight here. A Noir film(VERY well done, I might add) about big money and corruption which involves millions and millions of dollars("which could happen anywhere") and that attached to a murder mystery is "uninteresting", BUT almost ANY Noir film that's JUST a murder mystery is going to be "much better" and "especially if done in Black & White", eh?! Naaaah, sorry. Ya see, while I'll admit "Chinatown" has a few anachronisms(WHICH I might add, nobody has yet mentioned in this thread), such as the story of William Mulholland bringing water to L.A. happening at least two decades before 1937 and when this film was supposed to have taken place, this movie IS still one of THE best films of the 1970s, in both direction, acting AND in the correctness of its period sets, props, wardrobes and hairstyles. (...THIS old native Angeleno thinks some people just don't like the guy who played Jake and/or the little child molester who directed it...though it's PROBABLY a good thing you have me on your ignore function Fred, 'cause I KNOW how much it upsets you when somebody disagrees with you) LOL -
Btw Palmerin, while I really like both of these films, I might remind you that the former here and which you're using as a "yardstick" (as the latter is actually done in a docu-drama manner and thus would and should be more "accurate") isn't exactly "true" to the historical facts, either. The real "great escape" of the Allied soldiers from that German stalag that was dramatized in that film actually contained NO American soldiers at all, and so "artistic license" was taken in regard to this story when John Sturges committed it to film. (...and I also bet none of the real escapees ever commandeered a British-made TRIUMPH motorcycle from an German soldier while making his escape, either...let ALONE attempted to jump a barbwire fence while astride it)

Oh, I quite agree with your use of the word "demonized" here, dark. And in fact it appears I must somewhat refute my earlier statement to you about finding what you said an "overstatement" after a doing an internet research, as I found this Wikipedia page regarding "The Communist Control Act of 1954"... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Control_Act_of_1954 Now, the reason I said I must "somewhat" refute" my earlier statement is that after reading this Wiki page, it appears this Act has never been enforced by any Executive Branch administration. (...but overall and the bottom line here appears to be that you were correct and my use of the word "overstatement" was misapplied...my apologies, sir)

Mustache or No Mustache? (or is it moustache?)
Dargo replied to speedracer5's topic in General Discussions
Actually, while I love the story and Skouras' line, I don't think it was a matter of Peck's mustache(and which I always thought looked great on him in this film) being the cause of the poor box office results, but probably more that it's a rather slow moving character study of a haunted and hunted man, and that for a Western there's more "indoor" than "outdoor" feel to it, which might have turned off audiences at the time. -
Well, hopefully there's "Room for one more, honey" up there in that great TV land in the sky for Miss Martel now... (...what an exotic look she possessed)
-
Yes, actually James has a valid point here. The Dixie Chicks were not "blacklisted" per se. It was more a situation of their recording contract being dropped during all the FREAKIN' FLAG-WAVING bein' done during our run-up to that REALLY STUPID invasion of Iraq. (...yep, that was it, alright!) LOL
-
Well, when people get vindicated later on and when it becomes apparent to EVEN the most clueless of sorts out there that they right AFTER ALL...well...yeah...they usually recover just fine, ya know!!! LOL
-
I dunno 'bout that. Ya see, I have it from a very reliable source that the Ark of the Covenant WAS actually found a while back and when it was opened, everybody who didn't keep their eyes shut wound up as a little pile of dust. (...though then again, this "very reliable source" I mentioned ALSO told me he believes in all that there "Chemtrail" stuff in the sky TOO, so maybe he ain't so reliable after all!)
-
And dark my friend, while I found that comment very funny, I also have to say that I found it as much of an overstatement as GoodGuysWearBlack's "statement of fact" was.
-
GoodGuysWearBlack, on 18 Aug 2014 - 1:19 PM, said: Absolutely GREAT reply here, hep! And lets add Jon Voight and Tom Selleck to that list with Denzel here, and I'm sure taking more time to research this, I could come up with many many MORE names of "Conservatives" in the entertainment industry who've made AND continue to make a pretty damn good living plying their craft out there in La La Land! (...in OTHER words, there is ONE GREAT BIG FREAKIN' DIFFERENCE between being "discriminated against", and which Conservatives in "Hollywood" AREN'T IN FACT a victim of being, AND that of being out-and-out BLACKLISTED from their chosen field!!!)

Actors you associate with one another (for no particular reason)

Okay then. In THAT case it's now MY turn to say, "The horror...the horror" to THAT statement. 'Cause even withOUT all that makeup on there, Gene is STILL one ugly dude... (...and thus the VERY reason I would NEVER think of HIM at the same time I hear the name "Simmons" being talked about...nope, MY first thought is ALWAYS about that foxy little brunette British actress) -
Wanna good loyal wife? Then marry Ann Doran. (...though if you happen to have a somewhat rebellious teen-aged son by her, who wears a red jacket, drives a '49 Mercury and likes to visit Griffith Observatory, Ann CAN BE rather bossy now and then)

Dargo replied to TomJH's topic in General Discussions
Hmmmm...never saw that one, James. BUT, I sure hope Dan doesn't play the title character in THAT one! (...seein' as how poor Mary Anderson has ALREADY gotten kicked around for playin' an African-American in this "Underworld" flick!!!) LOL -

Cheerio, Ol' Boy! (...though I still say Herbert and Alan are a more logical duo here than Herbie and Georgie...THAT I just don't see) -

I too thought of "The Burglar" after reading Ollie's post, lavender. Good mention. Yep. Given the chance, it seems "Slimy" Dan was pretty good at being able to elicit feelings of sympathy from an audience when he played the "duplicitous" sort, alright. -

Eeh! This is probably just MORE the case of bein' like MANY Americans, James. (...and just fallin' for a British accent!!!) LOL -

Herbert Marshall and Alan Mowbray. -
LOL Well, while I thoroughly enjoyed reading your lament to one aspect of the bygone era of Hollywoo..err..TORONTO movie history here Tom, I gotta admit that it didn't quite bring me to the same level of melancholy I experienced recently after watching that video in another thread about the demolition of San Francisco's Fox Theater. (...though if it makes you feel any better here, your story here WOULD presently rank a good close second!)
