Dan Duryea Fans Alert - UNDERWORLD STORY today 6:15pm (EST)
Dargo replied to TomJH's topic in General Discussions
Disagree, James. I thought Da Silva nailed it...though when I saw Tom mention yesterday that he was going to be in this film, I pretty much guessed he would play it that way. And his laughter wasn't nearly as "maniacal" as Widmark's was in his movie debut, though I can see why Andy attempted his comparison here. Though here I agree with you, and think Andy's "wish" wouldn't have made for a better ending at all. -

Tiki Tiki Kid King of upstate New York (...coming soon to Netflix) -
That was always my interpretation of that final scene away, Mr.R.

Nice write-up on Stephenson, Tom. As I watched the 1940 version again last night, I also noticed how well he played the conflicted lawyer.

James Stephenson ...and... Conrad Veidt

Nah, sorry Kid... Melvin Douglas ...and... Russell Hicks

Mustache or No Mustache? (or is it moustache?)

OH, well, if you're now talkin' about the "classic" Fu Manchu 'stache here dude(perhaps best remembered being sported by "Broadway" Joe back in the day), I gotta admit I sported THAT little number MYSELF back around the late-70s. (...AND I might add here that I looked SO cool with it and in my bell-bottom pants while dancin' to "Stayin' Alive" at the Red Onion in Redondo Beach, IF I do say so myself) LOL -

Yeah, you mean that thin little line of hair that runs along the jawline, Arturo? (...yeah, well...sorry dude, but like our friend finance said here, THAT was/is NEVER a "good look"...ESPECIALLY with vatos that have a double chin, and who appear to be tryin' to CREATE a freakin' jawline!!!) LOL -
Doesn't anyone want to talk about World War I?

Aaah...and that would be the crux of Greek complaints here, rr. Even in modern Greece there is a feeling of great pride that Alexander was born in the city of Pella in the kingdom of ancient Macedonia which lies within the present borders of Greece. -

LOL I dunno, Tom. It sure looks to me like "Good Moustache People" and "No Moustache People" can "suck" pretty well TOO here. (..."suck face" that is!) -

Hmmm...so, not even the great "Singin' in the Rain", eh?! Gotta say Swithin, and speaking of "appreciating scenes" in that genre, I think that movie has SO many great scenes in it that I find it nearly impossible to not watch the whole movie. Add in the factor that it takes such great fun in skewering Hollywood and I've always found it to be an almost perfect movie. (...but hey, we were talkin' "mustaches" here, weren't we...so what say we get back to that, eh?!) -

Hmmmm..."not a big fan of Gene Kelly", huh?! Well, other than finding THAT remark somewhat "strange", as I think the guy was absolutely one of the greats, I suppose JUST for you I will now refrain from posting a pic of Gene sportin' a 'stache in the movies "The Pirate" and "The Three Musketeers". (...and besides, he doesn't look that great sportin' a 'stache anyway) -

LOL Great story, Swithin. So, when the women suddenly stopped screaming after seeing that it was "just you" leaving the men's room, did that kind'a make you feel a little like Donald O'Connor at the beginning of "Singin' in the Rain" and when all the women at first think it's Gene Kelly driving up to the movie premiere and only to discover its Donald and then "the big letdown"? (...'cause that was MY first thought here) -
Movies That Could Have Been Made Today

Speedy, I thought they pretty much did with this one, and in fact the guy who played the alcoholic in it won the Best Actor Oscar for his role and just like Ray Milland did for his portrayal of a guy with the similar affliction back in '45. (...and of course I'm talkin' about Nicolas Cage in 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas") -

Well...T'ISN'T "a far far better thing I do than I've ever done" here, but here's Ronald Colman sans 'stache in "The Tale of Two Cities"... ...and he just doesn't look like the ol' boy we've come to know, wouldn't ya say?! -

HEY slayton! You forgot to mention "Macedonia" here, and a fairly new little country that was part of Yugoslavia and whose mere mention of its name will cause great consternation to many of our Greek friends. (...and especially to my friend Thanassis in Athens, who will tell you that "THAT is NOT the real Macedonia" in no uncertain terms!) -

OH! And one more thing here... Selleck?! Yeah dude. Glad to see that 'stache back and without the little goatee. That's a MUCH better look for ya. (...but DUDE! You're SIXTY-NINE freakin' years old now, and NOBODY'S buyin' that THAT sucker AND your HAIR is really THAT DARK, ya know!!!) LOL -

HEY! It worked for pretty well for our 16th President, ya know!!! (..."But other than THAT Mrs. Lincoln, and forget the play...did you ever warm-up to Abe's Amish look?") -

Okay, one more old sitcom/mustache reference to follow here... So, I'm watchin' an old episode of The Donna Reed Show a while back, and in this one her husband played by Carl Betz(a very good lookin' guy sans a 'stache anyway) decides to keep his after returning from a fishing trip. Well, Donna just HATES the thing and by the end of the episode gets him to shave it off. But I gotta say, I thought Betz looked pretty darn good sportin' that sucker. Btw...has anyone noticed that JUST sportin' a mustache and with no other facial hair has become VERY "un-hip" in the last few years?! (...but THANK GOD that little freakin' "soul patch" thing so many hipsters were sportin' under their lower lip until recently has now seemed to run its course...THAT just looked LAME sittin' on a guy's face and without any other facial hair!) -

Not with THIS crowd around HERE it ain't!!! (...you know, "this crowd" that at last count is at about 50 percent of 'em thinkin' ANY movie made after Louie B. kicked the bucket by definition must be "inferior" and "definitely not a classic"?!!!...uh-huh, THIS crowd around HERE...and so THEY know who "Ben Turpin" was, dude!) LOL -

All this talk of mustaches has reminded me of a particular Dick Van Dyke Show episode where while Laura gets her big toe stuck in a faucet while lounging in their hotel room's bathtub, Rob draws on a mustache with a permanent laundry maker. The episode is all done in flashback while telling the story to their neighbor Millie. And at the end Millie asks Rob how he finally removed the drawn-on mustache, to which Rob replied he wasn't able to and that it was just being covered up by some of Laura's makeup, and he then proceeds to wipe off the makeup to show her. Millie then says, "Hey, you know who you look like with that mustache?" Rob replies with a jaunty look, "David Niven?" Millie relies, "No! Ben Turpin!". To which Rob then crosses his eyes. (...fade out to commercial) -

LOL (...you knew that would get a chuckle out of me, didn't ya finance) -
AND, speaking of a new-found appreciation for Brando... After years of just catching bits and pieces of it over the years, I also finally sat through the entire showing of "Guys and Dolls" the other day too. And I have to say, first, I do NOT see the logic whenever someone will suggest that he and Sinatra should have reversed their roles(and I've read that), as I found Frank perfectly cast as Nathan Detroit, but I also thought not only was Brando's singing voice "serviceable"(he hit all the notes, though his voice wasn't "strong"), and also thought he brought just the right amount of self-assuredness mixed with just the right amount of vulnerability to his role as Sky Masterson.
-
Trust me here Speedy. FIRST watch "Teahouse" and THEN decide for yourself how much Brando is "stereotyping" Asians, 'cause once again, I think he not only does NOT resort to "stereotyping" his Sakini character and very very VERY UNlike Mickey Rooney does in "Breakfast at Tiffany's", but his makeup is spot on and his accent is very believable as he played probably THE smartest and wisest character in the whole story. (...and speaking of "stereotyping", remember, even though Paul Ford plays a blithering idiot of an American Army Colonel in this one, NOT ALL American Army Colonels are blithering idiots!!!)
