Yeah, and besides here folks, did Jane EVER have the guts(or the bad sense) to tackle playing Genghis Khan on screen??? (...I think not!!!) LOL
-
Eeh! We're tougher than girls, dude! (...and besides, because boys NEVER hang up their clothes and just throw 'em on the floor of their bedrooms, the chances of Christopher bein' berated about hangin' his clothes on "metal hangers" is VASTLY diminished...didn't think of THAT, now did ya?!!!)
-
Btw, and speakin' of "David Wayne" here... Is it only me or does anyone else here think any role he ever played in the movies could have ALSO been played by Tom Ewell? (...well, I always thought so anyway)
-
I dunno about this, Arturo. Ya see, I'm thinkin' here that if Joan doesn't get that part she MAY have taken out her frustrations on little Christina even MORE!!! (...and so, can we REALLY say "NOBODY gets hurts" here?!) LOL
-
Your "feeling" is wrong, Helen. You've always had credibility in MY book, anyway! (...but yeah, doncha just hate it when someone says "your feelings are wrong"?!...but then again, that IS a "guy thing", ya know!)

Billy Bigelow- wife beater or sympathetic soul?

Yep, in the grand scheme of things, it IS incumbent upon and the responsibility of each individual to possess enough self-confidence in order to stand against being "held down". And yes again Tiki, it IS sad that this is not the case worldwide, and especially in parts of our planet known as the "Second and Third World". And which is the reason it rankles me to NO end when new arrivals to the "First World", especially to these United States, BRING vestiges of their often backward and sexist culture here, and which PART of that appears to be teaching their female offspring that they will "never be as worthy" and their male siblings. (...yep, THAT sorta thing is GUARANTEED to PI$$ ME OFF...and is just ONE of the reasons why "assimilation" is NOT a "bad freakin' thing"!!!!) -
Yellowface staging of 'Mikado' has to end

Well, personally Char, I didn't mind at all when women would stare at my gorgeousness and objectify me when I was a young s t u d! AND in FACT, truth be known, I kind'a sort'a MISS those days of yore. (...NOT that I'm some kind'a dog NOW, you understand!) LOL -

Could NOT agree with ya MORE here, James. The little exposure I've had to Mr. Perry's "shtick", I've found to be extremely "low-brow" and NOT funny at all! (...geeeee, I hope that didn't make me sound like some freakin' snob here!!!) LOL- 225 replies

Ham, while you definitely make a very valid point about the hypocrisy inherent in this example, have you ever considered the possibly that people who have been discriminated against for centuries primarily because of the color of THEIR skin might just find it "a little" difficult to, say, "identify with" and then think of the "white chicks" in the world as being a segment of our society which should be "protected against discrimination and stereotyping" that they themselves have endured FAR more over time? (...uh-huh...yep...ya MIGHT wanna consider the "context" here and that there's JUST "a little" historical difference goin' on here, my friend) -
So, in essence here GR, you're agreein' with me about this NOT bein' "anarchistic" to the times depicted in HIGH NOON then, RIGHT?! (...well, I'm glad we have THAT settled then...and thanks for bein' the ONE person to reply to my thought here, btw)

In other words, and maybe what you're REALLY kind'a sort'a sayin' here is that few women EVEN TODAY have the guts to "let it(their sexuality) all hang out" like Mae West did over 80 years ago now, RIGHT?! And STILL in this day and age that in the back of almost all women's minds they still hear their mother tellin' 'em that they "have to play the game in order to get a good man". RIGHT?! Yep, if I haven't misread ya hear, yep, I'd say that that might be true, alright. And the reason many women, but not ALL of course, have a strange affinity for the "bad boys", 'cause it takes most the responsibility away from any decisions they might make in regard to this. My bottom-line point here being that I'VE always had a little issue with the thought that it's "still the men in the world who keep women down", when IN FACT in the WESTERN world anyway, for every man "keepin' a woman down", there's a mother who's been doin' the same thing but ONLY in a more subtle manner! (...and now talk amongst yourselves about this, as I've got a run down to Phoenix with that little shuttle company I've got a little part-time gig with...don't worry..I'll be back later this evening to collect all the slings and arrows directed my way for sayin' what I just did) -
So GR, how about my earlier thought right down there that this age difference in HIGH NOON might have actually mimicked many real life marriages back in the era this film depicted? No thoughts THERE? (...or from ANYBODY for that matter!)
-
Btw...THIS reminds me about somethin' around here.... Could somebody tell me the reason for some of our members not showing their gender in their bios? I can't for the life o' me think of why some folks around here wish to keep that a little secret.
-
Well Wayne, you'll have to remember here that 1978 was a few years before her co-star in that flick Michael Jackson would make his transition to becoming fit to play the Dorothy character!!!
-
This reminds me of watching RANDOM HARVEST again the other night, and where everybody else in that film is oh-so British, and yet young Susan Peters(who sounds as if she would have fit RIGHT into the cast of THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY-SOXER) is cast as Ronald Colman's young "British" love interest for a while and before he regains his memory of loving Greer Garson.
-
Yep, and he was also very good in his breakthrough role as the recent high school graduate about to leave Modesto CA for an eastern college, in a certain movie which featured classic rock and roll music and classic cars.

Here ya go, finance... She became a star when the Chuck Lorrie sitcom "Mike and Molly"(and I think one of the funnier sitcoms around lately) became a hit a couple of years ago, and for which she's won a couple of Emmys as lead actress in a comedy. (...she's actually very funny and quite talented...though of course she COULD benefit from goin' to those Spin classes you're so hooked on!)- 225 replies

Anybody consider the thought that besides the issue of "older male stars being quite a bit older than some of their female co-stars back in the mid-20th Century", that maybe the age difference in HIGH NOON was ALSO a very common social phenomenon in the late 19th Century in REAL life?! Because I believe my grandfather born somewhere around 1875 was about 25 years older than my grandmother, and I've heard that THAT was NOT an unusual occurrence between a man of reasonable means and a young woman just starting adulthood back then.
-
Glad to see you agree with my memory of the '64 version which I stated back on page-4, Andy.
-
Yeah, I agree, MiissW. And in the similar vein, I wouldn't necessarily call his son Dave Letterman "ugly" EITHER! (...nope, just kinda average lookin' too)
-
Yep, Tom. Let people say what they want about Coop's usual "stoicism", THAT right THERE is what I always thought he brought to almost EVERY role he ever played. (...in the history of cinema, there are few actor's who specialized in playing "the hero" and who could convey that very thing of "vulnerability" so well...and as you said earlier, ESPECIALLY with those eyes of his)
-
Now WHY in heaven's name would I want to downgrade into the body of Warren Beatty??? (...hey, if Tom can say he looks like Cary Grant, then what's the problem here, HUH?!)
-
Yeah, yeah...consequences, shmonsequences. What I wanna know and what hasn't been established here yet in this thing is... Would I be travelin' with the talking dog and that four-eyed little nerd? (...'cause I always LIKED the dog, but that annoying kid would DEFINITELY have to stay home!)
-
I'm seein' the common connection here in these selections and with the mentioning of Lombard and Holliday earlier, that we in general just don't care for actors and actresses who are known for "playing dumb". Would that be about it?! (...well, disregarding any thought of the vocal mannerisms also possibly in play here)
-
HEY! Have I ever mentioned around here my theory that Joseph Cotten is really David Letterman's dad?! (...oh...I have?!...never mind then)
