  1. And thus the whole concept behind the previous host of "The Tonight Show"'s segments, "Jay Walking". I've often thought this became such a hit and a regular segment on that program because how it seems so many people today don't care if they're shown on national TV as being..well..ignorant, and as if there's now some kind of perverse pride in that. I COULD be wrong here but it seems to me there WAS a time in our culture when people actually were reticent to have other people know that about themselves. I mean, I KNOW before those segments where edited together and shown on national TV, one had to actually sign a release form for them to be included in those. (...and so IF I'm right..well..there's ya "Example One" of how people will now days do ANYTHING for their "15 Minutes of Fame")
  2. LOL Yeah, well, one DOES get used to those two things over time, and besides up here at about 4500ft in elevation, I haven't run across any scorpions yet, as they tend to live mostly down in the 1700ft elevation of that place known as Phoenix...otherwise known to me as "L.A. without a beach and with the thermostat cranked up 20 degrees!" Nope, I JUST don't get the attraction of that place down there at all. And re Durango...I have to admit I've never been there, but come this Fall, the wife and I are planning a road trip to Santa Fe and then on to Durango so he can take that famous Durango-to-Silverton narrow-gauge train. However, I HOPE you like snow, as one of our newer arrivals in the neighborhood just moved from there, claiming they just couldn't take the winters of that 6500ft in elevation town any longer.
  3. Gotta disagree with ya about "Carnival of Souls" here, GR. Considering its shoestring budget, I think it's a pretty well done little flick. And, re your thread's original thought here, probably the two most notable movies filmed here among the beautiful red rocks of Sedona Arizona might be "Angel and the Badman" and "Leave Her to Heaven", though many a B-western had also been filmed here.
  4. I dunno, Andy. If THIS policy would be instituted, I'm thinkin' even after all this time around here, I'D still probably have at least five or six more "coherent" posts to go before I COULD start a thread!!! LOL
  5. Wouldn't advise that GR, as one never knows when our "resident Henny Youngman" will slip in a great observation. (...yep, and in the same vein as when some of our "resident Leonard Maltins" around here will actually slip into one of their movie reviews an original and thought-provoking idea, and which actually happens occasionally TOO, believe it or not!)
  6. Getting back to slayton's original post here... I've never caught the original '29 version of this film, but I have recently watched the '37 remake of it starring Joan Crawford, William Powell and Robert Montgomery, and which I understand is played very close to the original. And while I did think the dialogue was very smart and sophisticated, I think those too adjectives I just used go more to the heart of this "how times have changed" premise than does the concept of "morality". In this I mean, the characters are almost all depicted as either being "Upper Crust" OR are depicted as savvy con men and women(i.e: "smart and sophisticated") and thus would be people far more inclined to wish to keep secrets about themselves from becoming general knowledge. And so, to premise the thought that these people especially somehow exemplify the standard of behavior of a long ago and now lamented era would be a mistake, I believe. And secondly regarding the idea that people now days are inclined to post some of the most "personal things" imaginable on their "facebook account" also makes me think that EVEN today, "smart and sophisticated" people DON'T do that, or at least have a sense of modicum decorum which they keep to. In other words, while some idiots today will of course post some of THE dumbest(though NOT necessarily "immoral") things imaginable that they've done on their Facebook page OR videos of such on YouTube, and often apparently in some kind of a perverse prideful manner, this has FAR more to do with just being "stupid" and wanting to be "known"(i.e. their "15 minutes of Fame") than it does about being "immoral".
  7. Just thought you'd throw this up..err..OUT there, eh dark?!
  8. Now ya see, THAT was what REALLY caused the fall of the Roman Empire, ya know! No, of course they didn't have videos back then, but it was all those traveling road shows of Greek Tragedies they'd put on in those outdoor amphitheaters back then and then afterward failings to send any of the proceeds to "Roman Actors Equity"!!! (...betcha didn't know that, did ya!)
  9. Not for ME, anyway! Ya see, BESIDES the idea that Bunuel masterfully told the story in such a manner that it had you(well evidently not "you", but it sure did ME) guessing what was "real" and what wasn't and ALL the way to the end, but not ONLY could I not keep my eyes off of Deneuve, but ALSO off her hot as hell "madam" Genevieve Page! (...and who, btw, I just posted a picture of in the "Lookalikes" thread comparing her to Alida Valli)
  10. DANG, that was well said, Vautrin! (...I'm gonna start usin' this from now on whenever some idiot starts mouthin' off about how "they're takin' all his 'freedoms' away...that is IF ya don't mind, anyway)
  11. Yeah, or maybe Karen Carpenter??? (...sorry all you Carpenter fans out there...I just couldn't resist)
  12. LOL Better watch it, finance. That guy was known to eat others out of house and home, ya know! (...and the BEST "evidence" for THAT is just to LOOK at him...nope, I'll bet HE never did any of those Spin classes you seem to love so much!)
  13. Yeah, actually, I thought it was clever listing all those celebs who had "gotten away with murder". (...though of course in Beery's case, I don't think charges were ever filed, and in Arbuckle's case, it appeared his acquittal was a fair verdict)
  14. Now now, GR. Our friend finance ain't all that bad, and in fact other than THAT lame attempt at humor from him here, I usually think he's pretty funny. And besides, our OTHER friend darkblue here had another valid point to make about finance...he's from Philadelphia. (...and so would you NOT expect a list containing these questionable sorts who he'd jokingly, I'm sure, say he might like having as friends from guy who hails from a place notable for once BOOING SANTA CLAUS AT A FOOTBALL GAME???!!!) LOL
  15. Funny you brought this up about Chase, GR. A few years ago one of the "Law and Order" programs featured Chase in one their usual "ripped from the headlines" type episodes, and which had him playing a thinly-disguised version of the infamous "Mel Gibson gets stopped by a cop and goes on a racist rant" news item. He actually was very good in this dramatic role where he had to play a somewhat unlikable and full-of-himself type character. (...but then again, there IS word that in real life Chevy IS pretty much like that anyway, so maybe it wasn't all that much of a stretch for him!) LOL
  16. By people who usually have a nebulous grasp on the subject of History, and who wish to express the mistaken belief that the Roman Empire's collapse was primarily predicated upon some idea of a decay in the moral fiber of its society. Yep, a concept quite often offered up by a segment of our present society often referred to as "Bible-Thumpers". That's who. (...any other questions?) LOL
  17. French actress Genevieve Page... ...and... Italian actress Alida Valli
  18. The reason I'm quoting seewhite's complete list is because every moment he's posted here that makes HIM laugh also make ME laugh. Yes, I think THE GRADUATE deserves its ranking as one of the great comedy films, as I've always found it a very funny satire in the manner of a (Jonathan) Swiftian tale which wryly observes not only the American suburban mores of the 1960's but also the timeless and perennial generational conflicts inherent in society.
  19. Yeah GR. I've got one for ya here. The winner of the Best Picture category the year I popped into this world, 1952...THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. Now tell me here. HOW in the world could what many many MANY people now days view as THE greatest musical ever made AND one of THE best movies ever made REGARDLESS of genre, not even be nominated in that category??? (...and how in regard to that overblown circus flick of DeMille's, IVANHOE and MOULIN ROUGE is SINGIN' IN THE RAIN considered today, I ask you?!)
  20. Well, maybe you don't know this this Andy, but actually this movie was original titled "SIX Easy Pieces", but much like how Carlo Ponti pulled the plug on Antonioni while he was filming BLOW-UP and thus never really completed THAT flick and ended up having to do the best he could with the film he had already shot for THAT one, well, ya see.... (...yeah, I think you get what I'm tryin' to say here, doncha?!)
  21. Oh, I COULD!!! A little Victorian Era "cougar action" isn't all THAT hard for ME to imagine anyway! (...or was that the Edwardian Era...it's hard to know when those two eras overlapped, ya know)
  22. Yeah, but ain't it amazin' how a pair of high heel pumps AND the proper length skirt hem can help hide those unsightly flaws???
  23. Yeah, that's probably true. Well, at least before he REALLY had gone-to-seed, anyway.
  24. Well, once again hep, I think people in general have a tendency and are inclined to look past other people's "creepiness" depending upon the creepy one's physical attractiveness. (...at least as they say, "at first blush")
