And THIS would be a different response most people would normally have while enjoying Walken in almost any OTHER movie he's ever been in, HOW again dark???
-
I know what you're sayin' here James, but that was the youngest picture of Edward I could find on the Net, and with my thought being to compare a young Edward with an older Cary, and thus attempting to support my point that even a 60-something Cary would be more attractive and desirable to the ladies out there than what appears to be about a 30-something Edward. (...hey, and besides, you DO know that SOME women think that whole serious tough guy "bad boy" look is hotter than some smilin' happy lookin' dude, now doncha?!) LOL

WAIT! Are we talkin' sweet little Joan "H-A-Double R-I, G-A-N spells Harrigan" Leslie here??? Oooh, I GOTTA see this one! -
Yeah, by '65, Mason pretty much was done playing the romantic lead...just in case you weren't kiddin' here. (..btw, gotta ask...have you ever caught "The Journey" when TCM has shown it, and if you have, what do you think of it?...I think it's an under-appreciated film)
-
Any truth to the rumor he met her at that M.A.S.H. unit they had outside of Nashville for a while???
-
Yeah, well, of course Hector would. After writing about Grandpa Jones and Junior Samples for all those years in that Gazette, almost ANYTHING would be an improvement!
-
Well THAT'S a shame! Maybe Rex and Molly would've been more kind to that flick if Edna May played the horse instead. (...well, I guess we'll never know NOW, huh!)
-
Hmmmm...now wouldn't having Edna May Oliver play the horse be better casting here, Tom?
-
That's a funny thought alright Lorna, but I got the impression that dark was actually attempting to say "passive" here, and can you imagine OR have you ever seen a movie in which Yul ever played a man who looked like he was going to "take it without dishing it back" somehow?
-
Gotta agree with dark here and when he said, "Not soft enough to play Zhivago." BUT, speakin' of Yul and bein' Russian, one of MY favorite roles of his AND when he plays a Russian is in the movie THE JOURNEY(1959). And you might know, he plays a Soviet Army Major in this one during the Russian invasion of Hungary of 1956. I think he's PERFECT in that role of a man holding a group of vacationers caught in that country during this revolt. Loved the way he portrays the character's internal conflict of attempting to balance his duty with his new-found infatuation with Deborah Kerr.
-
REALLY?! Ya think so, huh. I dunno, but I could never really understand him being the first to bid SNL adieu and start his movie career, and when I always felt he was the least talented of that original SNL cast.
-
Oh, sorry. I didn't know we we talkin' about "dicators" here. (...so, what would you like to know about my old boss anyway???)
-
Yeah...maybe. But I'd still place "National Lampoon's Vacation" on the top of that short list.
-
Now whaddaya talkin' 'bout here, hep? Chevy Chase made movies TOO, ya know! (...though few were any good, of course)

LOL Reminds me of what the Mankster once said after a showing of this film on TCM a couple years ago now. It went somethin' like this: "PATHS OF GLORY was banned for many years in France because the French Government viewed its message as an affront to the French Military....insert your own French Military joke here!" (...man, I STILL crack-up every time I think of that...and coincidentally, THAT'S when I started warmin' up to the guy!) LOL -
LOL Yeah, well, word is the Generalissimo always DID have a soft-spot for Dominican ballplayers, Morris.
-
Yep, I remember that episode well, James. In fact, a couple of years ago I used the premise of that episode in order to get out of Grand Jury duty, telling the presiding judge of the Grand jury selection process that I could not in good conscience sit on ANY jury where I'm primarily hearing ONLY one side of an argument and then asked to make a judgement.
-
Well, we ALL had our "gangly years" ya know, Joe. (...well, except for maybe his co-star in "Rebel": Natalie...I think SHE might've been the exception to the rule here)
-
Funny, and here I always thought it was Ronnie who started divorce proceedings against Jane...and by claiming he just couldn't take that unflattering hairstyle anymore that she started sportin' in the '50s!!! (...well, live and learn, as I always say!)

Tom, when I read this part of your tribute here... ...it reminded me of one of the scenes in that series that always brought me a big laugh. Jim and Angel are being held in some warehouse by a bunch of bad guys, and the leader of those bad guys is telling his captives that he HAS to kill them both because if word got out about how he had been snookered by them his reputation on the street would be ruined. THIS is when Angel says to the guy somethin' along the lines of, "Hey, tell ya what! Just do Jimmy and then let ME go and spread the word that you don't mess with Big Ralph!" Well, eventually of course Rockford and Angel escape, but as they escape Jim turns to Angel and says in a mocking manner, "What the hell was THAT 'just kill Jimmy' thing all about?!"

I'm going to go with THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, here. An ending of which isn't sugar-coated fantasy*, but more a case of clear-eyed hope for a better future after all the trials and tribulations suffered by the returning veterans in that film. (*-though don't get me wrong here, I'm cryin' tears of joy like everybody else is when Harry Bailey toasts, "To my big brother George, the richest man in town!" in the movie so many here have mentioned)

And now back to my original premise that women can often be as shallow as us men are! (...I love it when a thread comes full-circle!!!) LOL
