  1. Thanks for the further explanation here, rosebette. I wasn't familiar with "The Eagle and the Hawk", and so I checked out the IMDb page for it, and it does indeed reference "The Dawn Patrol" as a kindred example of such. It also mentions that a young Cary Grant played against type from what he would eventually become known for playing later in his career. And seeing as how I think Fredric March was one of the greats, I'd love to see this film one day. Thanks!
  2. Yeah, I remember when her name first came up as being a SOTM a while back and somebody had started a thread about her, and my first reply in that thread was that I didn't care for her because all I had seen her play were the "whiny and clingy" types. However, after viewing many more of her movies during and after her SOTM run, I had to admit later on in that same thread that she WAS capable of and did great work in movies that didn't feature her as that type at all.
  3. Dang it, Speedy! I DID mean Eleanor Parker, not Powell. Sorry. (...geeez Dargo...first it was that whole Mansfield/Van Doren thing here and now THIS...dude, you're loosin' it!) LOL
  4. And thus Speedy, the very reason I've found TCM's SOTM series so helpful to me in my ability to reassess actors who I might have formerly dismissed as ones I might not have cared for, such as after watching many more of Eleanor Powell's and Joan Fontaine's films than I had previously done before their turn in the SOTM spotlight. And so, MAYBE once Vic gets his turn in that same spotlight and after you get a chance to watch more than just those two films you mentioned you had seen him in, who know, maybe you'll reassess YOUR opinion of him too.
  5. Okay, ncff. Your post here had me wondering about this little bit of "trivia" you cited, and so I Googled "Victor Mature's flatulence problem", and I couldn't find a thing which supported this contention. BUT, what I DID find in my search was the link below to the ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUSLY written "review" of the movie "Demetrius and The Gladiators" done for the DVD/Blu-Ray release a couple years ago. You folks HAVE to read this! I was laughin' myself silly while I was! It's actually a very positive review and has some nice things to say about Vic, but some of the comments in it regarding "The Robe", the movie this movie is a sequel of, and the acting of Richard Burton and Jay Robinson in that film I found especially funny. http://www.examiner.com/review/suggested-for-mature-audiences
  6. Soooo...kinda like how I feel about those caterpillars Dorothy Malone sported above HER peepers then too, EH Speedy?!!! (...though once I get past those suckers, I still think Dottie's kinda hot)
  7. Thanks for the great photo selection here, Tom! I believe just from these stills alone, one can begin to understand the "versatility factor" of Vic's career. And while he MAY have had "wormy lips", I think he could use his "brooding" eyes to convey a wider range of emotions than people remember him for doing. (...and something of which that has been previously mentioned by a few others in this thread...and by those who I guess can look past his "wormy lips") LOL AND, here's something else which I don't believe anyone has yet mentioned so far... His line-reading abilities in almost every films I've ever seen him in seemed very natural and, at least to my ears anyway, never sounded false in tone nor over or under emoted.
  8. "Wormy LIPS"??? Well, that's certainly a new one on me...errr, I guess on Vic that is. (...now MY lips are sooooooo kissable...but I hate to brag, ya know)
  9. Wow! How coincidental here, James. I "read" that very same thought earlier today around here myself somewhere!
  10. Yeah, well don't laugh here, Vautrin. Word is that that ALONE made Hersheys a whole lot of money in the '30s and '40s, dude! (...they couldn't keep it on the shelves long enough in the markets located in Culver City, Burbank AND Universal City especially...in fact I've heard that one prop manager even had to once drive all the way to Torrance just to get a few cans of the stuff)
  11. Hey! Whaddaya tryin' to do here, lady! Ruin my shtick here or somethin'?!!! Okay. Then I'll just place you in the "A guy's k-nockers should never be any larger than his female co-stars are" column and just leave it at that! (...however, are you even talking about his performances in the Noirs he was in?)
  12. Oh, I dunno about THAT, Sans. I've lost a WHOLE lot of that there "cognitive dissonance" stuff in my day, meanin' I think that I'm not absolutely sure about more and more things every single day, and yet I'll bet nobody 'round HERE is ever gonna say that I'M "mature"! (...hey, speakin' o' which, how's about talkin' about "Mature" in my thread about him, HUH?!...I've always loved your take on things, ya know!)
  13. HEY now, Mr.R! It has been brought to my attention recently that making fun of how some people talk isn't very nice! (...and so...PLEASE go on!!!) LOL
  14. LOL Another success here, Rich! (...btw, if ya really wanna know what time is it, don't bother asking Robert Lamm or anyone else in that musical group named after The Windy City...they don't know either!)
  15. Okay, and now back on topic here... rosebette, could you please expand a little more on what you meant by this film being the most "modern" of WWI-themed films, and as per your thread title? I'm not exactly sure what you meant by this, and would be interested in more understanding your intent. Thanks.
  16. LOL Love IT! Great segue back. Tom! (...the woman looks a little like an adult Surely...err...I mean Shirley Temple...okay, and maybe with a little Ann Blyth mixed in)
  17. Decent enough thought about Jayne's "child-like vulnerability", I suppose. Yeah, okay, I'll buy that. (...though your attempt to "re-track" this baby with what I'm going to assume was a still from "The Long Haul" didn't post, ol' buddy)
  18. FACE PALM!!! Dang you're RIGHT, Tom! It WAS Mansfield not Mamie!!! James, you're a "bad influence" here, dude! But yeah Tom, you're right again...Mansfield, Van Doren, really not much of difference anyway in my book, though I DO have to admit that Jayne MIGHT have been a little better with comedic material than Mamie. (...THOUGH, bottom line here, Jayne's last line reading in that movie WAS gawd awful, you have to at least admit THAT, now doncha?)
  19. LOL Well Tom, I'm pretty sure James AND myself have by now made it perfectly clear around here that neither of us are all that into peroxide blondes, and so NATURALLY Martha's gonna "steam up" US much more than Mamie! (...right James?!)
  20. OH, and btw...for the more timid around here who might wish to say somethin' about Victor Mature but somehow feel they can't now after I sidetracked "my own" thread here...here's all ya gotta do: Start out by saying, "And now back on topic", and then say whatever ya wanna say about Victor. (...simple, HUH?!) LOL
  21. On Van Doren's "what", James? 'Cause besides your very valid point about Vickers, I gotta say I remember Mamie's final scene in this film being about as bad a piece of acting as I can remember. (...well, OTHER than maybe O'Neal's, Ryan that is, little line reading HERE....) LOL
  22. HEY!!! Btw here! Who the heck sidetracked "my" thread with all this talk of George and Dan and Hedy and Susan anyway, HUH?! Oh wait, that's right...I guess I kinda did that myself with that "Samson and Delilah" pic featurin' George and Hedy, huh. Never mind then, and please continue in any vein that you wish here, folks. (...I'm hopin' to get 10,000 views in this baby too...I mean, this IS a 'contest' around here, isn't IT?!...and as usual, I can't afford to be picky!) LOL
  23. Yeah, and isn't that one of those famous "Seven Stages of Grieving"???
  24. I'll give ya three guesses here, Mr.R. (...and in this case, Vautrin AND/OR finance don't count, nor should be counted!!!)
