Can I piggyback on this thread to ask if they could also give Jason and the Argonauts a break too?
Not only is it not particularly good, it HAS to hold the record for the most weekend showings on TCM. I swear, this is like, the nineteenth weekend airing of that thing in the last two years.
So Lorna! Does this mean rulin' you out of comin' to go see my new film that's scheduled to hit the cineplexes August 1st, and which among others things consists of ME dancing around on my yacht to the tune of "Classical Gas"?
Uh huh...yep...you guessed it, The title is: "Mason and the Dargonauts"!
(...on second thought...how does one delete their post around here?...and besides, I ain't got no yacht anyway)

"It's all these news threads, I tell ya ... it's the news threads ... who needs CNN, man ... the cycle is here, I tell ya, I tell ya ..."
Trying to channel Lyle Talbot in one%

"It's all these news threads, I tell ya ... it's the news threads ... who needs CNN, man ... the cycle is here, I tell ya, I tell ya ..."
Trying to channel Lyle Talbot in one of those pre-codes ... let's see, was it Three on a Match ? ... They want him to rub out a child, he says, "I can't do it, I tell ya, I can't do it ... I can't do it, I tell ya ...

And with perhaps a certain Don Henley song playing in the background that sayin' somethin' about some "Bubble-headed bleach-blonde" who "comes on at Five"???
(...or would that be much too anachronistic a thing here ?...yeah, a '30s movie and '80s hit single...yeah, just forget it...it would never work!)
-
Yea, I had to look up her name by searching The Big Sleep. Either way great minds think alike. But in this case I can't say I was letting my mind do my thinking!
LOL
So, some OTHER part of your anatomy then, eh?!

(...yeah, I certainly understand THAT, alright...Joy can have that affect on some of us guys, huh...too bad she wasn't in more movies)

“Of course it all started with ME …”
Fascinating post. I hope your finger isn't hurting you for staying up all night clicking on the thread :-P. Kidding, kidding.
I never posted to your thread, “What do views mean?” I would post to it now though I am loathe to bump it up, for obvious reasons. No need anyhow, what views mean (in some quarters) can summed up in one word .. EGO.
What about actual postings? They don’t do anyting for you? To date, there have been 36 posters, only 8 are making contributions in meaningful numbers. These 8 represent nearly 75 percent of total posts, so yes, interesting to a few. Thanks to the Big Eight. But, according to data, the wider audience doesn't seem moved.
As to those precious VIEWS, only one out of 27 views actually end up as a posting. Given the curious nature of your other “NEWS” threads, there might good reasons for why 26 out of 27 visitors are looky-loos.

Why laffite! You do get some kinda thrill about being the bearer of..ahem.."bad news" or somethin'???!!! LOL

(...JUS' couldn't resist...and I'll stay out of this now)

Well for my money I would take Joy Barlowe as my taxi driver. I'm sure Tom would also.
Beatcha by two whole minutes here, James!!!

-
And then AGAIN of course, if you're lookin' for a little "eye candy" behind the wheel, there's no toppin' Joy Barlow here!

-
Yeah, Bendix is fine in those I suppose, but for MY money ya STILL can't beat Frank Faylen and Douglas Fowley when it comes to drivin' cabs!

-
Everyone: Imagine the picture of a 1950's style woman screaming in abject terror that would have been quite funny in reply to this quote
...were this busted website able to support posting pictures.
("Don't have permission"- what does that even mean?)
Here ya go, Lorna...

(...and now don't ever say I never did anything for ya around here!)

Rather than repeat the same actors as SOTM, though, they should take, say, 3 consecutive months, and, in each month, have three or four character actors as joint SOTMs.
Hmmm... "joint" SOTMs, ya say?
(...why, I thought they already HAD spotlighted Mitchum in this series, finance?!)
-
While I think Newman was a fine actor, there aren't too many of his films that I really like. THE STING, THE VERDICT,and THE RACK come to mind. Maybe his movie titles have to be THE ___________for me to like them.
Ummmm...well...I suppose that THAT would all depend upon how you feel about movies with the words "Silver" and "Chalice" in the title too, wouldn't it finance?!

(...'cause word is Paul himself was never all that crazy about a certain movie who's title began with the word "The" that he was in, anyway)
-
Yeah yeah..."wormy lips", "gassy"...maybe maybe.
(...though just remember...don't EVER make fun of anyone's "speech impediment" 'cause that's sooooo low class, ya know!) LOL
BUT, did you guys read that DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATORS "review"? Was that crazy funny or WHAT?!!!
-
Thanks for the further explanation here, rosebette.
I wasn't familiar with "The Eagle and the Hawk", and so I checked out the IMDb page for it, and it does indeed reference "The Dawn Patrol" as a kindred example of such.
It also mentions that a young Cary Grant played against type from what he would eventually become known for playing later in his career.
And seeing as how I think Fredric March was one of the greats, I'd love to see this film one day.
Thanks!

Haha. I thought Eleanor Powell seemed an interesting choice. Not that there's anything wrong with her, all you Powell fans. I haven't seen her in a film, so I can't comment.
I, too, was really impressed with Eleanor Parker. Except I didn't see her SOTM schedule. I saw her in a film with my boy Errol and I really liked her. She and Errol made a great couple in the film too. The film I watched was a comedy; so I'm looking forward to seeing her in some different type of roles.
Yeah, I remember when her name first came up as being a SOTM a while back and somebody had started a thread about her, and my first reply in that thread was that I didn't care for her because all I had seen her play were the "whiny and clingy" types. However, after viewing many more of her movies during and after her SOTM run, I had to admit later on in that same thread that she WAS capable of and did great work in movies that didn't feature her as that type at all.
-
I hope so too. Although, I don't think I'll ever think he's attractive--not my type; but if he's good and the film is good, then I can look past his outer appearance. After all, William Powell isn't exactly a h ottie, but I enjoy his films.
Re: Joan Fontaine, I haven't seen many of her films either prior to her SOTM tribute, but of the films I watched, I really enjoyed.
Haha the auto-censor starred out h ottie!
EDIT: At first, I thought you were talking about Eleanor Parker. I posted, then realized, wait! no! Eleanor Powell, the tap dancer. I haven't seen any Eleanor Powell films.
Dang it, Speedy! I DID mean Eleanor Parker, not Powell.
Sorry.
(...geeez Dargo...first it was that whole Mansfield/Van Doren thing here and now THIS...dude, you're loosin' it!) LOL

I think it's the high arches in his eyebrows. I don't know. Looking at all the Victor Mature photos, some are better than others. I think the ones where he doesn't have his lips pursed are better. His mouth reminds me of Ed Sullivan's. Is that weird?
Maybe I just need to see Victor Mature in a better offering than the ones I've seen. The two films of his I've seen were terrible, despite having had leading ladies like Lucille Ball and Rita Hayworth.
And thus Speedy, the very reason I've found TCM's SOTM series so helpful to me in my ability to reassess actors who I might have formerly dismissed as ones I might not have cared for, such as after watching many more of Eleanor Powell's and Joan Fontaine's films than I had previously done before their turn in the SOTM spotlight.
And so, MAYBE once Vic gets his turn in that same spotlight and after you get a chance to watch more than just those two films you mentioned you had seen him in, who know, maybe you'll reassess YOUR opinion of him too.
-
I didn't find him handsome in any way, shape, or form. It was just something about him that I couldn't look at. I think when I once read he had a "gas" problem and his co-stars couldn't complete scenes without running out the door - maybe that's what I think of when I see him in film or photos of him.
Okay, ncff. Your post here had me wondering about this little bit of "trivia" you cited, and so I Googled "Victor Mature's flatulence problem", and I couldn't find a thing which supported this contention.
BUT, what I DID find in my search was the link below to the ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUSLY written "review" of the movie "Demetrius and The Gladiators" done for the DVD/Blu-Ray release a couple years ago.
You folks HAVE to read this! I was laughin' myself silly while I was! It's actually a very positive review and has some nice things to say about Vic, but some of the comments in it regarding "The Robe", the movie this movie is a sequel of, and the acting of Richard Burton and Jay Robinson in that film I found especially funny.

Based on the pictures that Tom posted, I think it's the eyebrows. They remind me of someone who got a bad facelift or something. I don't know. I find them distracting and makes the whole general package unappealing.
Soooo...kinda like how I feel about those caterpillars Dorothy Malone sported above HER peepers then too, EH Speedy?!!!

(...though once I get past those suckers, I still think Dottie's kinda hot)
-
Thanks for the great photo selection here, Tom! I believe just from these stills alone, one can begin to understand the "versatility factor" of Vic's career.
And while he MAY have had "wormy lips", I think he could use his "brooding" eyes to convey a wider range of emotions than people remember him for doing.
(...and something of which that has been previously mentioned by a few others in this thread...and by those who I guess can look past his "wormy lips") LOL
AND, here's something else which I don't believe anyone has yet mentioned so far...
His line-reading abilities in almost every films I've ever seen him in seemed very natural and, at least to my ears anyway, never sounded false in tone nor over or under emoted.
-
Jayne best "comedic material" was on her front side. Comic possibilities up the kazoo.
Kind of a mixed metaphor here, ain't it finance???

-
I think it's mostly the wormy lips.
"Wormy LIPS"??? Well, that's certainly a new one on me...errr, I guess on Vic that is.
(...now MY lips are sooooooo kissable...but I hate to brag, ya know)
-
As for men; One is more of a man if they win a women's heart with charm (like Flynn), then using the John Wayne school of so called manhood.
Wow! How coincidental here, James. I "read" that very same thought earlier today around here myself somewhere!

-
I wonder if Richthofen had his name painted on the side of his plane like Richter did. It
does look kind of funny. Richter even looks a bit like all those Japanese pilots in WW II
movies who toward the end of the picture got theirs with bullet holes in the side of their
plane and chocolate syrup leaking out of their mouths.
Yeah, well don't laugh here, Vautrin. Word is that that ALONE made Hersheys a whole lot of money in the '30s and '40s, dude!
(...they couldn't keep it on the shelves long enough in the markets located in Culver City, Burbank AND Universal City especially...in fact I've heard that one prop manager even had to once drive all the way to Torrance just to get a few cans of the stuff)
-
I am very sorry to have to inform you that I believe that you are not as juvenile and foolish as you wish to appear to be.
The fool is sure. The wise man doubts.
Hey! Whaddaya tryin' to do here, lady! Ruin my shtick here or somethin'?!!!

Re: Victor Mature. I have not replied in that thread because his roles which I have watched have not been to my taste and so I have no appreciation for him as an actor.Okay. Then I'll just place you in the "A guy's k-nockers should never be any larger than his female co-stars are" column and just leave it at that!

(...however, are you even talking about his performances in the Noirs he was in?)

Kay Francis appreciation thread
in General Discussions
Posted
Yes it is, BUT as of 7-7-2014 and at 8:35pm EST, "my" Victor Mature thread(which I might add I started a day after this thread) has MORE "views" and MORE "posts" than does this one.
And so, tell here TB...Does this mean Vic(with his "wormy lips") is "more popular" with the public than Kay(with her mild case of "Rhotacism") is???
AND, does this mean I'm somehow "winning" somethin'??? 'Cause I don't know!
(...and thus the reason why I'm askin' the man with all the answers and the stats, that's all!) LOL
