Do you remember Bette Davis in "Now Voyager" before and after a complete makeover?

    Now, Voyager': 75th Anniversary Appreciation

The makeup artists did a similar thing to Donna Reed's eyebrows when it called for her character to be a frumpy spinster in It's a Wonderful Life's alternate universe segment...

That's how you become an actor too.

Though to be fair, they're probably far better at acting than we are.

Oh. I dunno, RJ. I've always thought I "could'a been a contender" in these regards if only:

    (1) My parents or a close relative had been in The Biz. YOU know, like say if my surname had been "Fonda" or maybe "Douglas" or maybe...well, you get the idea here, I'm sure.

    (2) I had liked my high school Drama teacher, and who once told me I was pretty darn good up there on the boards.

    (3) Wasn't so damn good looking, and because I was BORN to play character roles, ya know!

    LOL

    Oh yeah, and...

    (4) Wasn't so inclinded to laugh at my own jokes.

(...I hear directors absolutely HATE IT when their actors keep breaking into laughter during takes)

I think TCM should program A DEER TICK CHRISTMAS.

This was a great Christmas movie about the study of if the "modern deer tick" is racist or not.  Do deer ticks bite more white people?  Or do members of the black community get chowed-down upon more often by this hungry bunch?  And I've not forgotten about the 'brown' community.  Brown people could be up to their armpits in swarms of bloodthirsty deer ticks!  YE GODS!

→ Could it be that the modern deer tick is an =equal opportunity offender that ♥'s to bite anyone who happens to be close by •as opposed• to the ticks 🎯  targeting 🎯 people based on skin color?

TUNE IN AND FIND OUT ON . . .

    "A DEER TICK CHRISTMAS" !!!

Sorry Mr, G, but this ain't gonna happen.

Nope, and because Irwin Allen died before he even got this project to the storyboard phase.

(...NOT to mention that NOBODY trusted him anymore with money after The Swarm bombed at the boxoffice)

The grand prize I think goes to Audrey:

    ...

    Even hers change over time.

And to which I say, Thank god!

Nope, never cared much for young Audrey's overdone eyebrows there. They almost remind me of a younger Groucho's greasepainted mustache.

Nope, I've always thought Audrey hit the peak of her beauty a little later on and after she had those babies toned down a bit...like here...

  5. Slayton, you've forgot here to mention one the biggest stars during the early sound era, and who still sported those silent film era style eyebrows that didn't arch up at all.

Only women are shown here because society demands only women alter or completely recreate their eyebrows (as far as I know).  Was there an actress who did not alter or tweeze her brows?

I'll let Andy Rooney here answer this for me...

I'd like to meet up with you BACK THERE but, with the chill of the Ukraine crisis in mind, Dargo, I'm going to try to get to Harry Truman if I can. I'm not too hopeful, though: You know, the Show Me State! I probably will have about as much success as Dana Andrews' character in "NO TIME LIKE THE PAST"...

                                                                                                  Patton+Russians.jpg

Well, if you ever DO get to Harry, do me a favor and tell him it might be a good idea to reconsider his ignoring Ho Chi Minh's letter that he sent to him regarding his country's postwar independence from France.

(...it would save oodles of money and lives in the long run, ya know)  ;)

Hey, Dargo, there isn't some ban on two-wheelers with this thread is there?

This tricycle looks like a time machine:

Yeah, it kind'a does, doesn't it...although Rod Taylor might disagree. ;)

Back in the day a buddy of mine had a VW-powered trike that looked a lot like that one, although not quite as clean as that one.

(...that sucker would pull wheelies without any bother at all)

Ah! Thanks. This is the first I've heard of this new film. Looks like it might be pretty good.

(...and hey, it's even got Sean Penn jumpin' a Triumph over some stuff in it!)  ;)

  10. And btw here, folks. AND speakin' of Christmas movies here...although in this case, not necessarily one with religious overtones...well, if you don't count the angel in it anyway...

In the TCM's December Showings filler, I spotted a short bit of It's a Wonderful Life in it.

And so my question here is: Is TCM actually showing George Bailey's life story this year?

    (...uncut and commercial free?)

Tom halland is box office poison outside of playing spiderman his films don't do well, this and the biopic no one asked for and not even Fred Astaire wanted.

Yeah, and not only THAT, but evidently ANOTHER of Tom Holland's problems is people misspellin' his last name all the time!

That never helps an actor's bottom line either, ya know.  ;)

(...gee, whatever happened to "I don't care what they say about me, as long as they spell my name right"???

Speaking of your Ralph Williams drop here in the context of film, Dargo, there exists at least one movie where you can hear and see one of his commercials playing on a television set.

         http://swansongrp.com/picdocs/ralph.html

Speaking of Ralph Williams (read: Encino) and movies, no, I haven't seen a certain current film yet in case you are wondering. How about you?

Which current film are you speaking of here, NS? You don't mean Tarantino's last one, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood, do ya?

Yep, I saw that one when it first hit the big screen, and I do remember while the lead characters are driving around the streets of L.A., their car radio is tuned to and you hear the "Boss Jocks" of the old KHJ Top 40 radio station during those scenes, However, I don't seem to remember a Ralph Williams TV commercial being overheard in the background in any other scenes, although I might have forgotten this.

(...btw...I used to do a great Ralph Williams impression, myself...all ya had to do was talk like you were suffering from jockjaw, ya know) ;)

From that angle North doesn't look like Anthony George, agreed. But comparing the handsome Anthony to the meh George Maharis is not acceptable! True, they both had black hair.

Really? The "meh George Maharis", ya say?

Funny, but I always thought Mararis here was a pretty darn handsome guy, anyway...

So, what did ya always think of the guy's looks that replaced Maharis on Route 66? You know, Tom Corbett!

Oh wait! "TOM Corbett" was that Space Cadet guy on TV back in the '50s, huh. Sorry. ;)

I meant of course GLENN Corbett here...

But I do recall his second wife, former jockey Robyn Smith Astaire, did not allow his image or movie clips to be used without payment to her.

Now see, THIS is the problem with marrying a former jockey!

They tend to get on their, ahem, "high horse" about such things.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist this one. I know I know, should've tried  harder, huh.

(...interesting read up there filmnoirguy...thanks...didn't know any of that)

Actually The Unsuspected didn't fail at the box office. It made a profit of $400,000, which was still considered a disappointment. One of the problems Curtiz had in his production company arrangement with Warner Brothers was that he couldn't do any of the promotion for the film. That was entirely up to the studio and Jack Warner was only willing to spend so much on this film.

For those interested in Michael Curtiz, I can recommend an excellent biography, Michael Curtiz, A Life in Film, by Alan K. Rode. It has lots of details about his life and, for me, far more important, the making of his films.

Michael Curtiz: A Life in Film: Rode, Alan K: 9780813173917: Books - Amazon.ca

So, does Curtiz recount or have his own version of the infamous "Bring on the empty horses" incident, Tom???  ;)

(...I dunno, but I sure wouldn't want to have been Curtiz's proofreader for that book of his, anyway!)

Well, it appears that attempting to use poor Ingrid as an example of TCM's new wokeness didn't pan out and was a dud.

However, maybe the absence of "Come to the Stable" this year shows their war on Catholicism.

And then confirmed for sure when they'll show 2015's Spotlight, perhaps Roy?  ;)

(...well, they ARE showin' a few more recent movies lately, ya know)

  17. Btw here KR, and re my new and latest discovery of the "worst studio era actor of all time" here and thus replacing George Raft and James Craig who've previously held that title..

Dargo, I didn't mind Michael North that much, possibly because he looks like Anthony George, one of my childhood favorites.

If The Unsuspected had been a full WB movie and a bigger hit, perhaps the studio would have pushed Audrey Totter (or, for that matter, Constance Bennett) for a supporting actress nod.

    Yeah, probably true, KR.

However, because that North guy ruined this movie with his gawdawful acting, this was probably why it failed at the boxoffice!!!

    LOL

(...okay okay...I'll get off the poor guy's case here...for now anyway)

I agree that the motive for this killing doesn't knock you over the head, But in the scene in which Rains confronts Totter he says that she and the secretary had something in common, they were both far too inquisitive (Grandison was pilfering Matilda's money, I believe).

Fortunately Rains' motive for killing Totter was far more apparent. She was in danger of stealing the film from him.

    LOL

No one ever steals a movie away from the great Claude Rains, Tom.
