Okay, WAIT a sec here, Holden my friend! While I know it's now "trendy" to dis GWTW, TELL ME here dude, doncha think Gable's little scene were DeHavilland gets him to allow his daughter to finally be buried, show JUST "a LITTLE bit" of his abilities to realistically project that there whole "real and vulnerable" thing you're talkin' about here, dude??????????? (...in other words, Clark WAS a MUCH better actor than many people ever gave him credit for, and could HE help it if he was always straddled with that whole "ultimate masculine role model" thing and in an era when THAT concept was "in vogue", and thus mostly given scripts which pressed that whole idea?!!!)

Legendary Actress Ruby Dee Passes Away at 91
Dargo replied to SableGamine's topic in General Discussions
CBS Sunday Morning did a very nice tribute to her today. -
I didn't run across your earlier post regarding this Hudson/Garner comparison, Tom. But yes, of course the similarities between these two men of classic good looks and their talent for lighter fare have been apparent since they both hit the big and small screen. However, I also hope you might have mentioned something in that earlier post of yours which I've always felt could be said about them too...that basically both were "The Next Cary Grant" or at least groomed to be that, and especially in the aforementioned "lighter fare" films. (...and for the most part, both succeeded in that role, though of course it's also extremely hard to better the "original", and of which neither would do, of course)

RICH'S B (AND WORSE) JUVENILE DELINQUENT THREAD
Dargo replied to scsu1975's topic in Films and Filmmakers
I'll "Third" this sentiment here! Hilarious stuff indeed, and I especially enjoy Rich's "inside jokes" which reference lesser known movie trivia, and thus is perfectly catered to this audience of film buffs around here. -
True, Mr.R. But then again you have to remember, TB isn't old enough to remember not ONLY the day Superman died but JFK TOO! (...NOT to mentioned that the poor puppy missed out on watchin' The Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan stage TOO the first time around!!!)
-
I dunno what you're talkin' about here, Mr.R?! I distinctly remember Rains at one point in that movie saying to those noblemen who had him at sword point... "I'm shocked, SHOCKED to find that you want me to sign this document!" (...yeah, I knew you saw that one comin', didn't ya?!)

2001: A Space Odyssey & Ice Station Zebra

Oh gosh! Here we go again with that whole "Directors couldn't have made wide screen movies back in the day because that would have cut-off all the head and/or feet is they did" Theory o' Fred's again. PLEASE, would somebody, ANYBODY here('cause Fred has me on his ignore function) once again attempt to get good ol' Fred here to understand that GWTW and every OTHER flick ever made COULD HAVE been done in Wide Screen format IF its director would have ONLY told his Cinematographer to FRAME EVERYBODY'S head and feet within the freakin' movie and depending upon the particular shot's "intent" for the audience?!!! (...yeah, I know...a waste of time, huh...never mind) LOL -
I take it your Bar Mitzvah didn't turn out like you had hoped, eh finance?!!! LOL
-
Egg-ZACK-ly, my dear! (...but then again, evidently YOU aren't into those "Teddy Bear" types EITHER, huh?!) LOL
-
Oh you poor kid! Born too late, EH?! I was GLUED to that old Philco 17in TV set whenever this version of The Man of Steel was broadcast, and can STILL hum its stirring theme song to this very day! (...and don't forget George's turn on Oahu in a film that depicts the goings-on just before and after December 7, 1941, too)
-
Yep, and after I thought of George, I immediately went to his Wiki page to confirm what I thought. (...btw, I remember like it was yesterday the day in my second grade class when after little Randy Marley told us that Superman had shot himself, the general consensus among my peers was that there just HAD to have been some Kryptonite laying around in close proximity to him at the time for THAT to have happened!!!)
-
Lemme guess here, TB! Should I..ahem.."Look! Up in the sky!", to watch this one coming???
-
Yeah, good idea, VX! It WAS pretty funny. But nah, it might take MORE than just ONE sentence for finance to really "sell it" in the "Vole" thread! (...and I THINK we ALL know how adverse our Philadelphia friend here is to doin' anything like THAT, don't WE?!!!!) LOL
-
Sorry, GoodGuysWearBlack. I'll store this information now for future reference. (...man...you people with these freakin' "androgynous" names around here!!!) LOL
-
Not a bad point to bring up, as Douglas WAS always good at making even the most "flawed" characters somewhat likable. However, in THIS case, I think the story called MORE for us to somewhat "despise" the Sheldrake character and his philandering, and not so much the idea that we should "feel" for him because of that classic cop-out, "his wife doesn't understand him". You see, Sheldrake was just "the smoothest of the Smooth Operatators" when it came to all of the other philandering execs in C.C. Baxter's environment, and so NOPE, sorry AGAIN, Paul Douglas was NEVER the "smoothest of the Smooth Operators" in ANY of the films he was in NOR how most people remember him in film. (...I rest my case, Your Honor!)

The one where a boy comes of age and there's a lot of alcohol
Dargo replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
Wait! "Boy coming of age AND there's a lot of alcohol around"??? Reminds me of what Annie, the Bailey's maid, says in a certain Christmas perennial: "Kids and Music. Why do they need gin?!" -
Geee, Doc...ya think Rod might've watched Paul in "Angels in the Outfield" somewhere along the line?

Wow! The trip sounds GREAT! Love Italy....though how could anybody not, eh?! And speakin' of Moms and their "rose-colored" vision of their sons... As you may know, about 7 years ago now and a few years after my adopted Mom and Dad died, my wife found my birth mother up in British Columbia, and since then I've flown up to celebrate our mutual birthdays which are just one day apart on the calender. She's really a wonderful lady and thinks I'm the greatest thing since "sliced bread"! Well, this past March while I was up there, "Ma"(I told her I couldn't call her "Mom" 'cause I already had one, but she likes that I call her that) was telling me about the problems my youngest "half-brother" was having with his latest girlfriend and his son. Afterward, I told her I'm sure things will work out and then said that old line of Joe E. Brown's, "Well, nobody's perfect,(Ma)!". She then replied, "Well YOU are!" I broke out laughing and told her, "Well, it's just a shame that my Mom and Dad aren't still around to set you straight about THAT, Ma!" LOL
-
Yes, in fact Douglas was Wilder's first pick for that role, speedy. This has been a "bone of contention" 'tween me and a few ladies around here for quite a while. (...and I'm sure they'll chime in with their thoughts about this again as soon as they see what I've written here) LOL
-
Oh James, you're SUCH the "Moralist", ain't cha! LOL (...btw, welcome back to the boards...so, did you and your wife head over to Italy or somethin'?)
-
Sounds like you'd be in the "Paul Douglas would've made a great Mr. Sheldrake in THE APARTMENT if he hadn't died" camp, James?! Well, sorry, once again, while I COULD always see Shirley MacLaine fallin' for Fred MacMurray, I just could never imagine her fallin' for Paul Douglas. (...and despite some women's claims around here that they like the "Big Ol' Teddy Bear" types!!!)
-
True, but remember, almost EVERY war movie's portrayal of fighting men is done by men YEARS older than the actual soldiers doing the REAL fighting and dying. And true again. AND, the very reason I've been sayin' for YEARS now that Wilder blew it BIG TIME when he didn't cast Robert Taylor as Holden's older brother Linus in this flick!
-
Hey! Maybe SOME people LIKE listening to those nasally tones of his, dude?!!! (...though, no, I AIN'T one of 'em!)
-
Yep, that's pretty much it finance...DISCO by another name, and pretty much ONLY called that because the term "Disco" has much too much an "Old Skool" connotation to it. (...and kinda like how nobody likes callin' their "crossover" vehicle a "station wagon" anymore!!!)
-
Yeah, or maybe Seabiscuit! (...or as the old jokes goes, "Why the long face???"...yeah, I KNOW...kinda cruel, huh...sorry) LOL
