  1. The scene in the clip below is a good example of what I'm talking about.

Listening to this conversation between Mr. and Mrs.Miniver, one would think that Greer Garson's character is an Englishwoman married to an American or a Canadian.

When I saw scenes like this I was expecting some explanation for Walter Pidgeon's accent, but apparently his character is supposed to be English . . . even though he sounds like he is from North America.

Now, whaddaya talkin' about here, Holden?! Now didn't Walter just say to Greer in this clip, "Thank heavens, I SHAN'T have to talk to you about this!"???

Now tell me here, dude...When's the last time YOU ever said "shan't" in a freakin' sentence, HUH?! ;)

    LOL

Okay, okay, yeah, I see what you're sayin' here, but all I can tell you here is that for SOME odd reason, for YEARS I thought Walter WAS British. And so, maybe, at least in MY case anyway, I always bought into the concept that Walter COULD have been one of the King's subjects who helped the British Army evacuate off the shores of Dunkirk and live to fight the Jerrys(...err, I mean "THE KRAUTS"...I'm a Yank here, remember) another day in that movie. ;)

  2. So Tom. Are you implying here that what Errol was probably REALLY thinking when he spouted that classic line of dialogue was:

"What a creature Jack Warner must be for him to allow a creature like Michael Curtiz to direct me here!"

(...and so perhaps "method acting" DOES go back further than when Brando first hit it big, EH?!) ;)

  3. It's been a long time since I've watched it. I had forgotten Stefanie was even in it...she's fourth billed.

Did she say anything about working with Robert Conrad, Ty Hardin or Troy Donahue on this movie?

Nope. During her post-"Die! Die! My Darling!" screening talk, the only other actors I remember her talking about were Tallulah Bankhead, Bill Holden, John Wayne, Valerie Harper, Noel Harrisson, Robert Wagner, Natalie Wood, Jill St.John...ummm let's see...I know there were a few more, but no, none of her "Palm Spring Weekend" co-stars.

(...though as maybe you know, Ty Hardin sure went off the deep freakin' end after HIS Hollywood career came to a halt!) ;)

    LOL

  4. Wow,  great lookalike post!   Who knew that the eyebrows make the man!

Yeah, I'LL say! This one might be the closest lookalikes ANYBODY has ever posted.

(....saaaay, ya think Donald's and Tudor's family might have had the same milkman TOO???) ;)

  5. You are giving circumstantial evidence that Pidgeon should have had a touch of British in his speech. I am giving direct evidence based upon listening to him, that he did not.      There is a distinct Philadelphia accent which is common from neighborhood to neighborhood. Henry Higgins wouldn't be able to tell whether someone is from Bridesburg, Mt. Airy, or Roxborough.

finance, it appears you have been confusing the term "Mid-Atlantic accent" with the term "Mid-Atlantic COASTAL region of the U.S." here.

Actually, the term "Mid-Atlantic accent" is more a nebulous idea and has come to mean any accent which sounds neither British nor American/Canadian but perhaps a blend of both sides of how people talk on each side of "the pond".

And so, OF COURSE Sly Stallone doesn't have a "Mid-Atlantic accent.

(...know what'm talkin' 'bout here?) ;)

  6. I agree that this topic is fun(ny). But it certainly is news, when an 82 year old actress is a hit with TCM audiences, in this day and age. And to think she has been more popular among viewers than Rock Hudson. Normally I do not put an exclamation mark (!) at the end of my thread titles.  But this topic was so outlandish (and true) I had to...LOL

    Okay TB...fess up.

You really HAVE been(and as Tom up there in Canada earlier noted) puttin' people on here and your tongue HAS been firmly planted in your cheek there in SoCal while typing away in this baby the whole time, right? And, you really don't think that just because for a few days more people have been inquisitive about Dame May than of Rock that this really signifies anything, RIGHT?! ;)

  7. While you're always welcome at our house, we are seeing these in a theater-a grand picture palace.

In a nutshell, the "gods/aliens/human forebears" chose Frank Bowman to be the first human (Adam) to start life on the next inhabitable planet. Whomever arrived to Jupiter's moon first.

They allowed him to live out his earthly existence, and upon death was reincarnated as the "star child". I also think this imagery was used to compare the fetus in a womb to the contained "soup of elements" beginning of life in the vastness of the universe.

So Tiki, in essence, what you're tellin' me here is that Kubrick would've fit RIGHT in and felt right at home livin' here in Sedona Arizona and along with all these OTHER "New Age" kinda folks around here, RIGHT?! ;)

    LOL

  8. Dargo,

Since you are one of my favorite people around here-- I wanted to ask if you watched any of the May Whitty films. My guess is that you have probably seen a lot of these films already and just come on to the message boards to have fun.

Nope, Unfortunately, I didn't catch any of them this time. I mostly know Whitty from her roles in "Mrs. Miniver" and "The White Cliffs of Dover".

(...sorry, I can't go into more detail here, as our friends from Tucson have just showed up)

  9.

This upcoming week we'll be attending the screening of WEST SIDE STORY and 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY. (I'll have to sit in the middle and explain  what's happening to BOTH of them for THAT one)

Then a week after, we'll see YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, a family favorite needing no explanation!

Hmmmm...can I come over to your house TOO, Tiki? 'Cause to this DAY, once Kubrick gets to that whole "Star Baby" thing, I'M LOST, lady!!!

(...and I hear I'm not the ONLY one!!!) LOL

    ;)

  10. As someone who has wanted to respond but has chosen not to up to now, I can say to you the reason for all of the so-called funny responses and the clear steering away from the OP's question, it is because some felt the need or the desire to derail the conversation, as they often do on almost every other thread on the message boards.

You all know who you are.

Weeeell, once AGAIN, Rey, it IS really really REALLY easy to get back on topic in a thread once "those people"(yeah, like ME) sidetracks it for a while, ya know.

Just see one of my later posts in this baby and when I said:

"And NOW back on topic here..."

...and when I got ALL serious in this...ahem..."evergreen" discussion about some OTHER peoples' problems with TCM's programming choices and when I then stated MY oh so serious opinion about said programming,. and then I think you'll see how truly easy doin' THAT is.

(...yep, once again, it's really really REALLY easy to type THAT out and then tell us all what YOU think about this "dreadful ongoing problem"...yep, really really REALLY easy, alright...yeah, yeah, I know I KNOW...you feel you shouldn't have type "all that" out at first, huh!) ;)

    LOL

  11. How so? He had no more of a British accent than you or I, or anyone else that has spent his or her entire life living in the U.S.

finance, I have always considered Walter Pigeon to have possessed what was/is known as a "Mid-Atlantic" accent(neither totally "British" or "American/Canadian" either...more a blending of these) and similar to what Archie Leach would come to use when he became Cary Grant.

And so, if I'm correct about Walter here, with him having this "Mid-Atlantic" accent, it always allowed ME(anyway) to accept him as playing a Brit fairly easily.

  12. Of course Dame May Whitty is more popular than Rock. Look at all those great films she was in:

    Klondike Annie

    My Little Chickadee

    She Done Him Wrong

And what a bod on that babe!

Okay Rich. I THINK you're "a little" confused here.

(...'cause I DON'T think back in the day any captain of a ship ever gave the order: "Put on your 'May Whittys' 'cause it looks like we're gonna sink!") ;)

  13.

It may be particularly annoying to the originator of the thread, especially if he had some pertinent points to make which had become lost or neglected by subsequent posters. Because a lot of posters don't have the time or inclination to go through a whole post, especially one that is pages long, it might help to curtail thread derailings, to some degree, if posters always saw the original post first, rather than starting off by seeing the latest one.

On the other hand, if threads always started with the original posting, posters would be forced to scroll down to see the latest comments if they wanted to see to where the thread had evolved before they make their own posting. And that would be annoying, particularly if it's a long thread.

You can make a case either way, I suppose.

If it's technically possible, I think the best way might be to always have the original posting at the top of the thread, followed by the most recent comments. That way a poster would see the originator's points in creating the thread, followed by the most recent observations on the topic.

Sorry Tom, but your thought which I took the liberty to place in bold letters ISN'T necessarily accurate.

You see, what CAN be done and programmed, and which IS the case in another website which  I frequent(yeah yeah, that Triumph motorcycle one) is that the oldest posts are on "page-1" and all subsequent posts are shown on latter numbered pages, AND that if you are signed into the boards, the program will remember the last post you read because you have previously clicked upon that particular thread's "last page" beforehand, and thus it places the first 'unread" post at the top of your screen and all subsequent posts you "haven't read" below that one and in time posting order.

(...and thus negating this present need around here of scrolling down to get to your first "unread" post and then having to scroll back up and read bottom to top as it stands now)

  14. And NOW, back on topic here...

    MY opinion is:

On the whole, I think TCM's programming is unique, and I appreciate that they present a wonderful VARIETY of films from the forgettable older B&W "Programmers" made during the Studio Era TO some of the better made and sometime innovative more modern fare, and a VARIETY which NO other channel on MY TV anyway seems to offer. AND, presented by some VERY knowledgeable and likable hosts...well, OTHER than little Drew anyway, though she's "likable" enough, I suppose..

And SORRY if THAT sounds like I'm some kind of a friggin' "TCM Apologist" here!!!

(...man, I've sure done a whole lot o' apologizin' in this baby, haven't I???!!!) LOL

  15. Does it bother you, Dargo, to be ignored? (LOL) I dont have anyone on ignore because I'm too nosy, even if I may not like the poster all that much, I like to know what's going on.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to admit it does maybe "bother"me a little, Hibi...but definitely NOT to the extent of how "bein' ignored" affected Glenn Close in a particular movie that I would assume "SOME folks" around here hope will never be broadcast on TCM because it was released to the theaters in, gasp, NINETEEN EIGHTY SEVEN, and YEARS after Louis B. Mayer bit the dust!!! LOL

(...and yes, I TOO have always felt the same way as you about placing ANYBODY on the ignore function, as you never know WHO you might find making a very valid comment about somethin' and thus maybe having the opportunity to look at a topic or subject from a different perceptive and one you may not have considered before, and even IF you don't particularly care for that person's "persona")

  16. Dargo,

Why do you think Fred has blocked you?  Isn't it possible that he still reads your posts but just doesn't reply? I don't remember you two having a major disagreement...

I'm pretty sure he does, and for a number of reasons, TB.

First, he never replies to any of my questions to him, and EVEN the occasional and RARE ones when I'm actually bein' SERIOUS and not a smartazz!!! LOL

And secondly, I've noticed that when someone asks a question about something and I answer it(and once again, in rare tones of seriousness), he'll later in the thread will say the very same thing I DID in answer to that question, and without any acknowledgement of my previously answering that question.

And soooooo, I can ONLY assume that good ol' Fred HAS had me on his ignore function for quite a while now, and ever since, as I earlier mentioned, I "dared" disagree with him about somethin' or other.

(...of course then again there IS always the possibility that Fred is just tryin' to perfect his Jack Webb persona, YOU know that whole, "Just the facts, Ma'am" thing, and that as soon as he sees my picture of Groucho up there, is just figuring that THAT guy won't have anything to say of importance around here and then just moves to read what the next poster is sayin'...YOU know what I mean, RIGHT?!...I think YOU even once mentioned feelin' this way about me TOO about a year ago or so and made some comment about findin' it tough to take ANYTHING I say around here seriously because I joke around so much...well, I THINK it was you anyway...THOUGH if I'm wrong, I'll now apologize to YOU now TOO!!!!) LOL

    ;)

  17. People tend to forget that Shelley was a pretty impressive looking girl before she fell in love with anything that came out of an oven:

Yeah, not bad I suppose...UNTIL she opened her mouth and SPOKE, anyway.

And then that voice, SHEESH...like nails on a chalkboard!

(...WHICH I suppose worked to her advantage by often playing women you seldom find yourself rooting for in the story)

  18. I know well that you mean that statement as jest and it is a simple case of you being you. I ask that you not mention the situation again. It is politics which is inappropriate for this forum. It is also that I have friends and family on both sides of the issue and this is a very trying and painful time.

    My apologies, Sans.

Would you like me to delete it? I'll do that if you'd like.

    ***edit to follow***

In fact I've just edited that one down there....and of course went with the easy "Fernando 'Llamas'" joke instead)

  19. How long has the board been allowing GIFs? I tried to post one a month or so ago and got a "that format is not permitted" page.

    "GIF"???

That looks like a LLAMA to me, dude! And as far as I know, this place has ALWAYS allowed images of llamas to be posted.

(...BUT I think it DOES have a strict policy against llamas posting their opinions about TCM programming...but don't quote me on that)
