Can you (or anyone) please explain to me the difference between "rap" and "hip hop". I've never understood what this difference is. I used to think the terms could be used interchangeably, but apparently not.
What is "rap", and how does it differ from "hip hop"?
Rap has a more hard edge and hardcore lyrics, while Hip-Hop has a more R&B and/or Pop feel which usually contains a "catchy hook" either melodically and/or lyrically, and thus has more of a crossover or general appeal than does Rap.
(...at least this is how I've always viewed the differences anyway, MissW)

Yep, and I've just noticed her Wiki page has now been updated, also.

C'mon honey. Dave said he's circumcised. Can't you
just take his word for it? Sorry Dave, you know how
stubborn Kathy can be. Better drop those drawers.
Gefiltefish AgreementLOL
Reminds me of the time a co-wroker of mine, Rene Kaufman, and I were having a conversation during our lunch hour, and for some reason the topic turned to "circumcision". I think I had made some kind of joke using the word "Bris", and Rene was never a shy one.
"Well, for reasons of hygiene, most every male American Boomer was/is circumcised regardless of their religion", was one of her responses.
When I informed her that I wasn't, her reply was..."Are you SURE?"
I then replied(while laughing out loud), "Yeah Rene, I'm pretty sure. And I would know, wouldn't I?!"

How about that guy who dressed in drag and had a career under the name BEA ARTHUR?

Sepiatone
LOL

And now back on topic...
I'm sorry I missed watching these two films yesterday, as it's been years since I've seen 'em and from the great write-ups from MissW and a few others in this thread, it would have been a great refresher for me.
(...however, yeah, I do recall TWITW having that sort of a "cop-out" ending to it)
-
MIss W. was baffled about the airliner. I'll second that and add that I'm also baffled about Amsterdam. I haven't had ANY martinis. Was this from something earlier in this thread? I vaguely recall a song with the line. "Amster-Amster-dam-dam-dam"
Really, finance?! Never have been to Holland's capital city nor heard of their world famous Red Light district where women sit in windows "advertising" their "services", huh?!
Well, it appears that you weren't alone here.
(...I guess this'll teach me to be a little less "cryptic" with my jokes around this place) LOL

Dargo,
We may need to create a special award for you, for best comic relief-- maybe a TCM Razzie.

Thanks, TB!
(...but FIRST I'm gonna wait and see if you REALLY have any pull with the powers-that-be around here and if you can get 'em to start that "LGBT" forum...and so I ain't gonna hold my breathe about gettin' this new award until then!!!)

LOL

What airliner? I'm Canadian, Dargo baby, I'm thinking maybe whatever airliner you're referring to does not fly in Canada. (I could be wrong, truth is, I do not fly very much. Unless I've had 3 martinis in a row.)
OH, I'm pretty sure both Air Canada AND KLM have non-stop service from Toronto to Amsterdam, MissW.
(...and to where THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT of Amsterdam features MANY a woman in various states of undress displaying their "wares" IN WINDOWS!!!)
-
Yes, that explanation makes sense. Most likely more to do with people's familiarity with or lack of TWITW than any kind of preference for one or the other.
OR, it could just be that a whole lot of people were planning a sudden trip to Amsterdam, and thought with the title of this movie, it might be a good reference to check out before hopin' on that airliner.
(...another possibilty to consider, ya know!)

-
Hitchcock had a lot of fun fooling around with a corpse in THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY.
Yeah, and so did these two guys in another and newer flick...

-
Hey Kid! I got the answer before you posted that latest pic of Danny Thomas servicing Miss Malone's Jaguar!!!
(...okay, so that's not Danny Thomas, but it kinda LOOKS like him anyway, doncha think?!)

-
-- Don Knotts sure makes an ugly woman!
Well ya know LP, Don was never exactly "a Cary Grant" sans makeup and dressed in men's clothing either!

(...though ironically, Cary wasn't exactly "an Ava Gardner" when dressed in women's clothing in "I Was a Male War Bride", now was he!)

i was watching an episode of _the alfred hitchcock hour_ entitled 'an unlocked window' and stumbled upon a female impersonator who called himself t.c. jones.
it freaked me out.
I remember watching this episode as a 13 y/o and when it was first broadcast in '65, and it scaring the ever-lovin' you-know-what out o' me back then, too.

The Fast and the Furious
(...I recognized the earlier shot of the Jag XK120 with Dorothy Malone behind the wheel...though I LOVED the Shelley Duvall/Olive Oyl reference here, Kid) LOL

I was, but I do think the glee at the death of the Wicked Witch was unjustified. None of us know what made her so Wicked.
And the Wizard DID instruct them to bring him her broom, so he was covertly instructing them to murder her. And he was a giant big headed phoney who tied a curtain to a tiny little dog!
Hey! Just remember ONE thing here, lady...ANYBODY who hangs around with FLYIN' MONKEYS is usually someone who AIN'T got the best of intentions!!!!

Unfortunately, whenever a gay themed thread starts, there are a few posters who are outraged it even exists and have to make their presence known. Then there are those who have to make light of the subject to trivialize it or hijack the thread. That's how it goes..........
And once again in MY case Hibi my dear...this would be a different M.O. for me in regard to THIS particular topic than it would be for almost any OTHER topic around here, HOW AGAIN???
LOL

-
Ditto.
Then isn't not only TopBilled's suggestion about a separate forum for this topic a wonderful idea so that for those who have already made up their minds about this topic can skip goin' there, but isn't it ALSO a wonderful thing that if TCM WOULD ever program these sorts of movies in a block, that there's ALSO a thing called the "channel changer" on most people's remote controls TOO???
(...yep, life is JUST so "wonderful" sometimes, ain't it?!)
LOL

I thought it was a tornado that dropped a house on the witch of the east, not Dorothy. And I didn't see Dorothy stealing (looting) the red shoes either - they were transported by magic from the dead witch to Dorothy's feet. And although the witch of the west probably deserved to be killed for her crimes, it was not an act of murder that did her in - just an accident whereby water was landed upon her unintentionally.
Are you sure you've seen the movie?
I think primospromos was probably stating all that tongue-in-cheek, dark.
(...or else she REALLY took the musical "Wicked" to heart!)

-
I think if there are posters who are uncomfortable with threads of this nature, that speaks to the average age of the posters here. Nothing wrong with the average age -- which is probably around my age. It's just that the world has changed, young people are on a totally different page. And it's going to change even more. Get with the program. This is not a controversial topic! In fact, being uncomfortable with it is controversial! "Wake up and smell the coffee!"
While I agree with almost all of your observations here Swithin, the one which I took the liberty to place in bold letters is one I only wish WAS true.
(...'cause in my view, unfortunately it's naive to believe this enlightened attitude has finally come to pass in our society)
-
Yep Kid. For years I also confused those two great British horror film stars.
(...though I'll bet we're not the only ones)

First Mongo tells us Mona Freeman died last month and now this; what a sendoff!
What's rather strange here is that if you check Miss Hyer's Wiki page, it doesn't show her death at all. And Wiki is almost always extremely fast in updating their bio pages of notable people after their death.
Btw, in her Wiki page, it states the following:
During these years(the mid-50's and later) she was considered (by some) the best replacement for Grace Kelly, who had just retired after marrying Rainier III, Prince of Monaco.
Yep. That's how I usually remember her roles...as the prototypical "Ice Princess", and she was very good especially in those kinds of roles.

Thanks VX!
(...hopefully I'll never make that mistake again)

As Ronnie used to say, "now, there you go again, mister warneverybody".
Well dark, in TB's defense, he DOES make a good point. And so to get this baby a little back on track here...
I'm a little surprised that nobody has yet mentioned in reply to an earlier post about "some documentary once shown on TCM about gay Hollywood" that the title of that documentary was "The Celluloid Closet". And yes, I thought it a very well done and informative film.
-
Okay, Dargo. Now why don't you redo your list, with any word that really shouldn't be censored spaced so we can see it?
WHAT?! And take the all the FUN out of it?!
(...I purposely typed all those asterisks for effect, VX)
