  1. ???

HOW did GANGS OF NEW YORK get on that list?

    Sepiatone

That would be the 1938 movie starring Ann Dvorak and Charles Bickford and with the same title as Scorsese's 2002 film, Sepia.

(...and it's probably on that list because all the bad people in it get their just rewards by the end of it, and just like how all "good wholesome" movies SHOULD end!!!) ;)

    LOL

  2. Hey, the other night, MOVIES showed TO SIR, WITH LOVE.  This one always tickled me somewhat.  Yes, it's a good movie with Poitier giving a fine performance, and I remember when it came out, a buddy of mine dubbed it "THE JOLLY GOOD BLACKBOARD JUNGLE".  Made, I think, in 1967, or at least RELEASED that year, it seemed behind the times a coouple of years even then.  The girls fashions and hair-dos were more '65-'66-ish than late '67, and the boys looked out of time as well.

But still, a teen movie, eh what?

    Sepiatone

    LOL

(...why, it was just like I was hearing Terry-Thomas HIMSELF as I read your post here, Sepia!) ;)

  3. Jeez...all this from mentioning surprise at seeing WILL GEER in an early movie.

Well, as you probably know Sepia, Will was blacklisted during the HUAC era, and thus explains his lack of filmography for much of the 1950s, and thus possibly also explains your surprise at seeing him in Ol' Stone Face's flick here.

Speaking of Will, years ago I attended a wedding that was performed at his rustic outdoor Topanga Canyon amphitheater.

    (...btw...loved your Mom's line!)

  4. I think it is imperative that we change the way we look at the people we admire.

Eeh! Well Hep-baby, I don't about YOU, but I started doin' THAT years ago, and when I came to that little epiphany that those of notoriety as they say "put their pants on one leg at a time" just like the rest of us.

(...and regardless the amount of their so-called "talent")

  5. Sorry, but I have to ask, folks...

I mentioned 2009's "Adventureland" a few days ago, but received nothing in reply or acknowledgement to it. And so I was wondering if anyone here has watched this one, because as I mentioned earlier, I thought it a very well done, entertaining and occasionally funny little movie about teen angst.

  6.  I understand the Freud thing about cigars, but when it comes to the murder scene, not only do I not see a phallic symbol, I don't even see a cigar. (If that's the right way to metaphorize it.)

Kay, my earlier post to you about Siggy was not meant to imply the specificity of cigars and/or phalic symbols, but as VX attempted to explain, was the overall thought that sex(or the lack of same) in general(and a subject of which Siggy is probably best associated) was not the overriding cause of Shelley Winters' character's demise in this film, AND a point which you yourself seemed to make.

(...nope, but if it were ME with the LOVE/HATE tattoos on MY hands, I probably would've done Shelley in after a while JUST because I could NEVER stand her freakin' VOICE for very long in almost ANYTHING she was ever in!...MAN, what a whiny thing that was!!!!)

    LOL

  7. Freud's well known remark about a cigar just being a cigar is most

likely a phony, or to put it more gently, apocryphal. Like many quotes

that never really were, it was first written about in an article and nobody

really bothered to question that article, and it was simply repeated

for a number of decades and became a part of folk wisdom. Too bad

Siggy actually was so enamored of cigars, since they probably had

a lot to do with his death from cancer of the jaw.

What this country needs is a real good five-cent phallic symbol.

So then what YOU'RE sayin' here Vautrin is pretty much...

    The-Man-Who-Shot-Liberty-Valance-This-is

"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend"...RIGHT?! ;)

  8. The public does not make a person rich and famous and successful because of his or her personality. We do so because of their talent.

Well,.speaking.celluloid stars,.in movies or tv, there has always been the equivalent of the.Kim Kardasians, Paris Hiltons,.etc. who have no talent other than self promotion, that have a good measure of the public hung on their every move, foible, etc, and cant seem to get enough of them, and thereby increasing their wealth and fame. Their fans are.driven by their personalities, not their talent.

Uh-huh, and THEN there are the MOVIE and TELEVISION actors who possess at best MARGINAL "talent" and couldn't effectively act on the stage if their LIFE depended upon it, BUT because of the mass medium in which they're primarily known by the general public are paid and receive many many times MORE recognition for their work as compared to the little known actor plying their trade on "the boards".

(...point BEING: The word "Talent" is a VERY relative term and often has little bearing upon the "success" an actor achieves in gaining "fame" or monetarily)

  9. I think A FACE IN THE CROWD should be counted a hillbilly movie too.

Hmmmm...not so sure about that, ND. Considering that in THIS case the "hillbilly" was used as the protagonist to convey the thought that Americans of ALL stripes can be easily duped and are maybe more inclined into believing the "folksiest" of us can somehow be "more trusted to do the right thing" and be "good people" and somehow possess more "good ol' down home common sense", I'm of the mind that THIS film should maybe NOT be counted in with any comedies which portray those very thoughts as subtle "fact" and in a more lighthearted manner.

(...in THIS regard, I think there's MUCH more of a parallel to be drawn with the film "Elmer Gantry" than with any "Hillbilly" movie)

  10. I don't see any connection with sexual intercourse, or lack thereof, in the murder scene. She said, "You might say it was the money that brung us together. The rest of it don't matter." meaning his attempts to find the money, using their marriage as a device to get it. She said that the Lord wouldn't let it happen, so whatever the reason he came into her life didn't matter compared to the importance of them being together, because he saved her soul. The sexual situation wasn't brought up in that scene.

So, in essence here, what Kay is tryin' to say is...

    sigmund_freud_quote.jpg

    (...RIGHT, Kay?!) ;)

  11. He may well not have read it at all. Raft never got past the sixth grade and it was a struggle for him to get that far. His assistant Mack Gray initially read the dialogue to him and Raft would memorize it. Supposedly he improved his skills, but oddly enough, it's his earlier performances that show signs of life. From MANPOWER on, one can see the difference if you compare those performances to the likes of THE BOWERY, SOULS AT SEA or SPAWN OF THE NORTH.

    Well........

Sorry clore. I'm just waitin' for ya here to ALSO mention what a good dancer Ol' Stone Face was TOO!!! LOL

    (...sorry, couldn't resist) ;)

I still think that if it wasn't for his "look", a look which resembled Valentino, he never in a million years would have had a chance at Hollywood stardom.

Saaay, come to THINK of it, I'll bet his "look" would have probably made him a MUCH bigger star if those lousy Warner Bros hadn't started that whole "Sound" thing with Jolson, huh!

  12. judy.jpg

    Sweet and tolerable........What?

    Good ol' hometwon folksiness........Huh?

    Successful..........Yep

There's always an exception somewhere.

C'mon now, Vautrin! SURELY you know that even Middle America sometimes can't get enough of loudmouthed and obnoxious NEW YORKERS!!!

(...it's kinda like they're sayin', "Wow! We NEVER see people like THAT in Des Moines! How fascinating!!!")

    ROFL

  13. Well stated, fx! I especially agree with this quote of yours here...

But the same can not be said of a film review. I really do not think that movie goers are waiting with baited breath the word of a local or nationally syndicated reviewer of their thoughts about a particular film and that their review is going to have additional sway over whether or not they go and see the film in question.

...as I can NOT tell you how many times over the past few decades I've heard friends and associates tell me something to the effect of, "I don't trust the critics. If they say a movie is bad, then I know it must be good and I'll probably like it." And of course which is code for, "I don't like 'message movies'. I go to the movies to be entertained".

(...and which of course is how it seems most of the so-called "Mainstream" feel about their movie choices)

  14. How are you doing, Dargo?   I have been trying to get the latest about the AZ wildfires; hope you and missus are all right..

    Char (the 5' in FL)

Thanks, Char! The smoke from that fire, about 10-12 miles up Oak Creek Canyon, has been settling down into Sedona overnight while the winds are still, and then is swept back up the canyon by the prevailing winds by noon the next day, but other than that "inconvenience", we here in town have been spared any danger...and thanks of course to those brave and hardy firefighters up there battling it.

  15. I don't know--

that  Four's a Crowd seems a little suspect, and any movie with a character named Torchy--  Torchy Blaine in Panama , well do you need any other clues about her?

    LOL

Yeah, and how about that one in the first column..."Give Me a Sailor"???!!!

(...if THAT doesn't bring to mind a certain "Oldest Profession", I don't know what DOES!!!)  LOL

  16.

BTW I am not anti WW2,

    That's good...'cause you're about 70 years too late for that anyway! ;)

I just was thinking with the way Hollywood loves to go against the mainstream this time they seemed to follow the leader so to speak.

Well, while I can't think of any anti-war movies made in Hollywood during that so-called "Last Good War", I'm not sure your statement about "Hollywood loving to go against the mainstream" is really all that accurate, and not just pertaining to war-themed films. I think that idea actually runs counter to fact and which seems to be a misconception shared by many Americans, and seemingly growing in popularity, and especially whenever it seems someone is pressing their agenda(especially a political agenda), as Hollywood has always been MUCH more about catering to what the so-called "Mainstream" wants because they've always wanted what's in the pockets of the "mainstream".

    (...namely "money")

  17. And gosh, wasn't Shalit's skill as a reviewer about as dreadful as his trademark moustache-- but he was at least sweet and somewhat tolerable.

Yep, "sweet and somewhat tolerable", and added with JUST the right amount of "good ol' home town folksiness" especially, WILL usually help make for a long career on American television.

(...just ask that quack "Doctor" Phil...HE'LL tell ya!!!) ;)

  18.

As for "looking Jewish" people quiz me ALL the time as to my heritage. I certainly have a big hook nose & dark complexion where guesses range from Jewish to Eye-talian to Middle Eastern. Generally I'll answer with some BS like "Bohemian" or "Marx-bros-nian". Who cares really?

    SooBlankhead.jpg

Who CARES, you ask, Tiki?! I care, THAT'S who!

So, "Marx-bros-nian", ya say, HUH?! Well, in THAT case, let ME hear to recite the following...

"One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas! How he got into my pajamas I'll never know!"

...and then I'LL decide how truly "Marx-bros-nian" you REALLY are, lady!!!!

    ;)

  19. Watched some of it last night myself, Sepia. It just reinforced in my mind what a stiff Raft was. MAN, I'm tellin' ya, the way that guy reads his lines in everything he was ever in always sounds to me as if he's reading it off the script for the very first time! He's "infection", or at least his ATTEMPT at infection, was almost without exception just freakin' pathetic! NONE of his delivery of dialogue ever sounds natural in the LEAST!!!

(...okay, with one qualifier here: He WAS good as "Spats" Colombo in SOME LIKE IT HOT)
