Dick Cavett did that as well
Are you sure it was Dick Cavett or Johnny Carson??? I always had a problem gettin' THOSE two straight TOO!!!
(...naaah, jus' kiddin' and playin' off my earlier little mistake here)

-
He also appears to good effect in Support Your Local Gunfighter and an amusing Odd Couple episode where Felix somehow ends up leading a country music band (the other guest star is -- believe it or not -- Pernell Roberts).
How did he know Laurel?
His story is similar to Dick Van Dyke's tale of becoming friends with Stan later in his life. He called him up on the phone one day and Stan invited him over to his apartment, and it became a semi-regular thing.
-
Take pride in quoting the classic "needy bald people" line

Actually, I know Dick Curtis who played the game show host that Laura spills the beans to about Alan's baldness on national TV.
He owns and operates a little hotel here in Sedona now days, and has some great stories to tell about his friendships with Red Skelton who helped him early on in the biz, Jonathan Winters, and Stan Laurel.
-
BUT, speakin' o' Jack Carter, there's ANOTHER Borscht Belt comedian who was pretty good in more dramatic or semi-dramatic roles, wouldn't ya say?!
(...was this a decent "save" or NOT?!)

-
That was Jack Carter
FACE-PALM!!!
YEP, you're right, it WAS Jack Carter!
Never COULD get those two straight, ya know.
(...sorry...and thanks for the clarification...ooooh, you're good!)

Hey "Dwight", one of my favorite ball players from years ago was Dwight Evans of the Red Sox. Most everyone called him "Dewey" though. How many of them youngsters even know who was in the war and on what side?
Yep, Mr.R. My future wife and I were once visiting some real Sox fans/friends of ours in "Beantown"(and yeah, I know the locals hate that nickname...it's kinda like sayin' "Frisco" to those denizens by the bay in CA) back when Evans was playing and we all attended a game at Fenway.
I'll never forget how after Evans made a great running catch out there in right field, the entire crowd cheered and started chanting, "Dew-EEE, Dew-EEE, Dew-EEE!"

Jan Murray was never on the DVDS, at least the one that matters
Are you thinking of Carl Reiner (another dramatic actor -- Shakespearean trained no less -- who went into comedy to get work)
Nope, RK. I'd know "Alan Brady" FROM Jan Murray in a darkened television studio and with my eyes closed, dude.
And yep, I'm PRETTY* sure, though I wouldn't bet Alan's array of toupees on it("Surely there must be some needy bald people!") that Jan Murray once guest starred on the DVDS. As I recall, Jan played some old down-and-out friend of Rob's, but who would turn out to be very untrustworthy.
(*--about 97.6%, which of course leaves us 2.4% that I could be mistaken)
-
LOL
Yep, it's rather sad, isn't it, Rich. Doesn't surprise me at all however, and I'll tell ya why...
My given name is "Dwight"...yep, just like "Eisenhower". And, THAT is how I occasionally present this to people when first introduced to them and as an aid in helping them remember it.
However, and probably not surprising to you, I've come to realize that this seldom works anymore with people who appear to be under 30 years of age, as more times than not lately and after saying this to these "kids", they look at me with a blank expression on their winkle-free little kissers, because apparently they have NO idea who the hell the Supreme Allied Commander of WWII and the 34th President of these United States happened to be.
(...and that's when I'll occasionally use my Gabby Hayes crusty old man impression of 'em and say, "So what DO they teach you kids in school today anyway, HUH?! Evidently it ain't History!")
-
One hopes that you meant to refer to Jack Cassidy and not Shawn in regards to the rest of the subject you brought up. Otherwise it becomes a major EEEWWWWW. (Either way, it's an EWWWW but I'd prefer Shirley talk about Jack's prowess in that department instead of her son's.)
Agreed, but I didn't read the book, though I thought Hibi(who I think had) once mentioned around here that Shirley mentions in her book that she somehow knew one of Jack's sons(now that I think about it, it might have been David, not Shawn) hadn't fallen far from the ol' apple tree in this regard.
What say you, Hibi?
(...and yeah, I probably shouldn't have taken this thing in this direction, but I thought Hibi, who's just expressed her frustration with the word filter in another thread, might get a kick out of my post and how I presented it...and besides, she knows I have "no shame"...ain't that right, Hibi???!!!)

LOL
-
Was Carousel filmed both ways? I thought it was Oklahoma that was filmed in the 2 versions......
Well, that wouldnt be the only inaccuracy in Shirley's tome. It was full of them. No fact checkers apparently........
So you're sayin' Shawn Cassidy's **** ISN'T as grandiose as Shirley says it is???
(...just wanted to see if this new freakin' word filter around here that somehow filters out the word "m-o-u-t-h" would allow "s-h-l-o-n-g", THAT'S all!!!)
(...well, I guess it doesn't, and now I know!!!)
-
Yep, what a shame is was that Lucas COMPLETELY forgot why his original series we're not only successful at the box office but were also greeted with critical success....
GEORGE, IT WAS THE LIGHTHEARTED COMEDIC BITS SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE ORIGINALS THAT MADE YOUR FILMS SO SUCCESSFUL, AND NOT SOME PLOT-DRIVEN STORYLINES, DUDE!!!!!!! REMEMBER LINES LIKE:
"Good shootin', Kid. Now don't get cocky!"
and
"I gotta bad feeling about this!"
and
"I love you."
"-Yeah, I know!"
SO GEORGE, PLEASE REMEMBER THIS, DUDE, AND DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES AGAIN, OKAY????!!!!
(...sorry, I get carried away sometimes, ya know)

-
Did he play Jennifer's dad? I cant remember........
Yep
(...couldn't handle his wife's...ahem..."lust in the dust" shenanigans!)
-
Marshall is fifth-billed in DUEL IN THE SUN.
And if you miss about the first 10 minutes of the flick, you'd never know he was in it, as I recall.
-
Looks like a young Conrad Veidt to me.
(...and years before he'd demand a certain nightclub in a certain North African town be closed down)
-
Check out Jan Murray in Who Killed Teddy Bear?, a perfect film for TCM Underground.
Yep Swithin, that and his turn on the Dick Van Dyke Show as a conniving and unlovable character was what came to my mind as I typed out his name.
-
LOL! Is that Merv Griffin next to her?????????
But how far into the movie is it?????
LOL
Yeah, that DOES kinda look like Merv there, doesn't it Hibi!!! And NOW I'm wonderin' if that might be Arthur Treacher at top-center of this pic???!!!

And my guess as to when this takes place in the film would be during Robert Taylor's triumphant return to Rome fairly early in it.
-
Was never surprised at the fine performances given by the main cast. But it was SHELLY BERMAN'S foray into drama that took me by surprise. The guy had some good dramatic chops. I'm only familiar with him as a comic.
Sepiatone
You're right, Sepia. Shelly is also very good in this film.
Some of those old Borscht Belt comics, such as Alan King and Jan Murray, will occasionally surprise you with their abilities in drama when you stumble upon their work away from comedy, won't they.
-
Someone tuning into TCM that day, aware that SUTS is going on but not familiar with the daily schedules, will say oh cool, they are doing a day of Robert Taylor films or Deborah Kerr films. Then, they will find out when the next film comes on that the tribute is for Sophia Loren, and they will scratch their head and say Sophia Loren? Where was she in QUO VADIS?
It appears someone on the internet has already done the research on this one, TB...

Dargo, is that pistol one of those hollow chocolate things?

It's a still from the Marx Bros movie, GO WEST, and the six-shooter is made of licorice...I think!
-
Barbara Nichols (remember her) was just on Adam 12 the other day.
Now Mr.R, how could we EVER forget the brassy Barbara running and screaming down those airliner boarding stairs after that exotic looking stewardess(Arlene Martel) tells her, "Room for one more, Honey!" ???

-
These other channels are nice to have but they do have some commercial breaks (and often the same ***** commercials each time) and are more limited in the selection of films that they show (meaning a lot of repeats) . So I still greatly appreciate TCM for their format and hope they can stick to it.
Yep, we've recently switched from DirectTV to the local cable service, and I've now discovered MeTV and its wonderful selection of late-50s to early-70s television programming, and which seems to have become MY new "fallback viewing" trend.
(...nice to watch Dr. Kimble eluding that single-minded Lt.Gerard, Boris welcoming us to be "thrilled" and Alfred bidding us a "Good Even-ing" once again, among many other old shows)
-
Yep, I too agree. Always thought the entire cast of veteran actors did a great job of fleshing out all the archetypal characters in Vidal's screenplay, and which doesn't seem dated in the least.
(...well, okay, except for maybe that to NOW have both an extreme Rightie AND Leftie within the SAME political party vying for its nomination seems somewhat a "quaint" idea, I suppose)
-
8.21 LEE TRACY - Never made a dull movie in his life. Get the Mexican Ambassador to introduce the prime time selections.

LOL
-
Did any actress ever make a bigger splash with her first significant film role?
Hmmmm, let's see here....
Well, there WAS Esther Williams!
(...yeah, I know, much too easy, huh)

FINAL EXAM HILARITY
in Films and Filmmakers
Posted
Yep, always an excellent counterpoint to make here Kid, as admittedly I can only name three of these young stars right offhand...the anemic Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart(she who always looks as if she's just smelled something offensive), AND va-va-voom the zaftig Scarlet Johansson.
(...however, at least in the case which I presented earlier here anyway, please allow me to remind you that NONE of these young fresh-faced stars have ever been OR are ever likely to become A FIVE STAR GENERAL AND A PRESIDENT OF THESE UNITED STATES, and thus a person of whom ANY American of age 10 through 90 SHOULD know about!)
LOL
