@Dargo: Ya know why I don't like country singer Randy Travis very much? Cos he sings through his damn nose! Ugh!
Yes, BUT do you think you'll feel this way about Randy forever and ever (ahem), Mr.G???

(...btw, don't pretty much ALL country music singers "sing through their nose"?...I've always thought most of 'em do, anyway)

Yeah, and ESPECIALLY "pretty stunning" whenever Laura Harring here is on-screen...

Actually here James, for some reason which I've never been able to quite put my finger on, Scott Brady has always reminded me of Lawrence Tierney.
And maybe ALSO surprisingly, this same sort'a thing always happens with me between Dana Andrews and Steve Forrest, between George Sanders and Tom Conway, AND between Peter Graves and James Arness.

That's fair game. I read the other day that Clark Gable purposely changed the sound of his voice which after a while became how he naturally spoke.
You mean it wasn't because he once heard Dwight D. Eisenhower talking and said to himself, "Now THAT'S a guy I wanna sound like!" ???
(...ya know, there was quite a similarity between the sound of these two men's voices, don't ya?...but then again, you're probably not nearly old enough to remember how Ike sounded, are ya)

Ah HA! So THIS explains that "confused" emoji response you just gave me today in that earlier post of mine and where I went on that tear about how I'm sick and tired of people comin' on here and grippin' about the hosts supplying what is in REALITY is more a case of historical context, EH Shank?!

Yeah, I know it's David Lynch, and I've seen quite a few of Lynch's films, not to mention Twin Peaks (the original series.) So, yup, agreed, of course just about anything made by him is Bizarro (one word for it.) Although, come to think of it, Mulholland Drive is probably the strangest thing David Lynch ever made. Which is really saying something, when we're talking about David Lynch. And I kind of like the idea of that category, Bizarro Noiro (plus it rhymes.)
It helps if you think of Mulholland Drive as Lynch's take on Carnival of Souls.
(...reportedly, Lynch has even cited the earlier film as his inspiration for his film and which is considered a "surrealist neo-noir")

...instead of a Mazda Miata, and which share the same chassis.
(...and because "them there eye-talians" who styled this car just seem to design better lookin' cars than the Japanese do in general. and 'cause the Japanese for some reason tend to over-style their cars by putting WAY too many design elements on theirs and thus needlessly cluttering up the look of them)

Tuesday, Aug. 03, 11:30 AM - Kiss Me Stupid. Star of the show is Dean Martin's Dual-Ghia. He actually owned one as did other Rat Pack members. According to Wikipedia this is his in the movie. I believe Peter Lawford also owned one which he used for the opening credits of his The Thin Man TV series. Or maybe he borrowed it. Based on a Dodge, but body crafted in Italy by Ghia. I actually saw one of these at a car show several years ago. It was one of many nice cars owned by the owner of several automobile dealerships.
At 11:15 PM you can see Jimmy Stewart in his De Soto Firedome in Vertigo.

Well, I dunno about YOU here Sepia, but I started turnin' grey at just about this same age TOO, ya know.

But yeah, I suppose there's now a bit of a resemblance between LaVar and Joe Seneca, and especially if you look at him (Mr. Seneca that is) at about this same age in 1982's The Verdict...

The ONLY host I have ever laughed at is Ben, and I mean that in the best way possible! As great as Robert was, he didn't have Ben's snarky, boomer sense of humor. I love it. After all, they ARE only movies at the end of the day. I know we have a reverence for them, but to occasionally poke a little fun is not a bad idea.
EXCELLENT!!!
Well overeasy, yeah sure, I suppose I COULD have just simply said what you've just said here in order to make this same point about Ben and instead of goin' into that whole long story up there about what he said after showin' Paths of Glory that time, huh.

I know not of what you speakst. And to my knowledge I never so much as had ever a hungry eye to borrow or steal another's ... shtick. I might plagiarize an entire novel but shtick's are completely off limits, as far as I'm concerned. What, think thou I have no morals? I do confess posting on the Alicia Malone thread but my guess is that what you neglected to copyright came after that. And BTW, let's say---hypothetically of course---that I if I did have the temerity to purloin someone else's, uh, shtick, what possesses you that you might think that you might have exclusive rights to the famous Doc. I am innocent, innocent as a new born babe, so let's just say that great minds think alike.

(...I have not as yet deigned to see the reference of which you speak. Should I? Please say no. Contrary to some, I see nothing wrong being ensconced in everlasting ignorance)

Au contraire oh learned scribe, but my aforementioned "Sigmund Freud" referenced offering in the Alicia Malone thread was actually the very first reply posted within it. Yep, right there on page-1 and right after the OP began his gripping about the Aussie lass. And heck dude, I even posted a big ol' pic of the guy, Siggy that is, holding his signature cigar in his right hand while looking straight into the camera, AND even made it seem as if the famous shrink was offering up some good mental health advice to the OP of that thread while supplying a phonetically spelled Viennese accent.
And so how you missed that is ANYBODY'S guess!
(...however and with this being said and other than THIS point, yeah, I guess I have to admit goin' for the ol' "sorry dude, but I think you need to see a shrink in order to get over your troubles here" gambit would most likely fall into the realm of Public Domain, and so please disregard and dismiss in your mind any thoughts of my being perturbed with your earlier posted offering in this thread, kind sir)

And NOW as we take a little side excursion away from the subject of "Ben" here (and because HELL, I just GAVE the OP of this thread a good damn reason to like Ben up there...well, UNLESS they happen to come from FRANCE anyway), so lavender, what did you think of LaVar Burton's stint as guest host of 'Jeopardy!' ?

If he is still there close your eyes immediately lest you see a hand gesture or Heaven forbid he look to the left. A little therapy might help but there is no guarantee. Before turning on the TV, flood your mind with sweet purifying thoughts. Good luck.

Please ! If Ben would offer something beyond a google search info regarding movies, maybe staying on subject when talking about a movie and not to talk to us like were children ! Not to mention his crazy forced hand gestures which are distracting . Not to mention the wine crap .
Okay! HERE'S one!
His deep, resonant and soothing voice is as pleasing to the ears as the sound of a brook as it slowly cascades down a.....
Okay sure, maybe not THAT, but I DO think Ben can be rather witty sometimes and DOES occasionally offer up a little tidbit of info about some old movie that even I (someone who has SO damn much knowledge about classic movies tucked into the deep recesses of this brain of mine that my wife will sometimes tell others that her husband "has a mind full of useless information") didn't know!
Take for instance, the very DAY that I started to warm up to Ben. This was probably ten years ago or so and when there were only TWO hosts on TCM. Yep, just Bob Osborne and Ben.
So anyway, Ben is doing the wraparound for Kubrick's Paths of Glory, and at the end of his outro for this flick he said, "The French Government banned the showing of this movie in France for many years and due to what it said was this film's "denigration of the French Military." And ya know what Ben said NEXT? Well, THEN he said, "You're now free to think of your favorite French Military joke here!"
Now, do you think OSBORNE would've had the balls (although some might say "the bad taste") to say somethin' like that? NOOOO, of course not!
And so THAT, as I've said, was the very MINUTE I knew TCM had hired themselves a guy to introduce these old movies who had a HEAD on his shoulders, AND was pretty damn balls-y TOO!
(...there, might THIS answer your question here, DUDE?...or dudette as the case may be?)

Now, I have a feeling that all the hosts, with the possible exception of Eddie who will occasionally make some sort of offhanded comment about it, side with the whole "woke-ness" issue. And personally I have NO issue with this.
Nope, the ONLY "issue" I have with this whole thing is with people who get THEIR damn noses bent all out of shape because one of the hosts have attempted to provide what is ACTUALLY some short of historical context and who as I have noticed are NOT supplying "revisionist history" to those viewers out there who might NOT be familar with the era that these old classic films were made and released.
OR in other words, I'm getting PRETTY damn SICK and TIRED of "One Post Wonders" coming on these boards and complaining that they were "offended" that their strongly held beliefs were being challenged by something one of the hosts have said during one of their wraparound segments, and as if what the host has said will somehow lead this country down some "path to ruin" and/or will "poison the minds of the young and impressionable".
(...YEP, pretty damn sick and tired of THIS and NOT with any of the hosts personally...and yes, okay, even though I WOULD prefer that both Ben and Alicia possessed a little more resonance in their voices and were a little less nasally, and say, had as mellifluous a sounding voice as MINE, but hey, one can't have everything they want in life, RIGHT?!) Here's a piece about Andy Warhol and his favorite film, Creation of the Humanoids:
http://www.rebeatmag.com/fantasia-obscura-story-human-replication-andy-warhols-favorite-film/
"The film had one strong champion, Andy Warhol. The film was his favorite, as stated in a review of one of his openings in The Village Voice from December 3, 1964, and it’s easy to see why: the themes of creation and replication, the inability to divide the natural from the crafted, certainly appealed to his aesthetic, and guided his vision through most of his artistic career. Warhol could take the themes raised in the film and present them in a way that would resonate with the viewer. In his hands, how he tackled the questions raised by The Creation of the Humanoids became art."
Frances McCann...gorgeous woman who looked like a cross between Suzy Parker and Rhonda Fleming, and evidently was possessive of a singing voice good enough for opera.
But, while watching her in this film tonight, I think I've just found my new number-one worst actress of all time.
(...and probably the reason this little low budget flick would be her only movie credit ever)

HAUNTED GOLD (1932) 58m. Not bad for a quickie Warner western. Despite some racist-type elements at least Blue Washington receives a credit because he is in a lot of the movie. And his employer, John Wayne, trusts Blue enough to send him back to the ranch alone to get some money. → Robert Ryan didn't trust Harry Belafonte that much in ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW!
So, sort of sounds like a prototype of the relationship between the Wayne-Tom Doniphan and the Strode-Pompey characters which took place three decades later, eh Mr.G?

I like Alicia Malone. Some of the comments on this post about her seem harsh. I like the way she shares interesting information before/after films and she's a good host. Some of the other hosts are amazing especially Eddie Muller and Jacqueline Stewart but that doesn't mean Alicia Malone isn't good. Muller and Stewart have a wealth of knowledge and share great insights on classic movies. I've rented noir films that include commentaries by Eddie Muller that show his expertise and really enhance your appreciation of the film. Jacqueline Stewart knows the history of film and goes the extra mile to help people understand the beauty and artistic quality of silent film. I like the other hosts too. Let's be a little more kind. We're all part of the same classic film community.
Yes yes, Toto. I agree with everything you said here.
Still though, isn't it a shame that Ben and Alicia (wait for it here...and I KNOW you know what's comin' here, don't YA) both talk through their noses???!!!

And then, right click and paste it within the Reply field of your post.

So James, sorry but I have to ask...
Okay, fess up. Now WHAT in the world did you do OR say in your work environment that caused the people at HR to send you to this session, HUH?!!!
Yep, most do. It's been proven scientifically that the majority of people have almost a primal inclination to associate a strong, deep and especially resonant voice with that of those in or "should be" in positions of authority, or with those who are more likely to be or become more successful in life.
