I could care less that she's bloated, liberal, angry or a gasbag. I do care that she can't act and manages to ruin just about every song she's ever sung.

LA Times reports the death of the great character actor -- and John Ford fixture -- Harry Carey, Jr. at the age of 91. One of the last links to that great era of John Ford films. May he rest in peace in monument valley.

ROTFLAMAO. Now that's hysterical. The funniest comment I've ever read on these boards. Let's see she made some successful comedies and some successful musicals -- never had a successful film in any othe genre. Now THAT"s versatile! LOL. -
In the research I've done there is certainly ample evidence of his racism but I've never found any evidence for his being a "Nazi." Can you share your research?

Is life so sad that you have to watch the Senate on C-SPAN2? I had no idea anyone actually did such a thing. I'd rather watch paint dry. It would be more exciting and informative. -

People in their 20s and 30s would be totally bored -- as hard as it is to believe -- in that seduction scene. That scene -- to me -- is so hot that I need to take a cold shower after seeing it. But today, they'd have to have their clothes off, the actress would have to have enhanced breasts that heave, and the actor would have to have a six pack with huge pecs that the leading lady could lick .... Takes all the fun and joy out of it, doesn't it? -
Just like Eugene Pallette, one of my favorite character actors, who was so awful that I'd probably walk across the street just to avoid him.

Sorry, but as someone who knew Stanwyck for 30 years, "Babs" was never a nickname anyone used for her and she would never have allowed anyone to use it. Just like Elizabeth Taylor was never referred to as "Liz" except the ignorant and those who wanted to seem familiar but really weren't. -

Nah, I can't think of more than 3 or 4 films made in the 30s or 40s that would be popular today. Maybe not even that many. Today's filmgoers, for the most part, are not interested in that kind of stuff. They want action, lots of nudity, four letter words, and stars who are hot but can't. Not too much of that in the 30s and 40s. That's why we have TCM! -

What reality? I don't get the use of that word. Of course, Kevin Costner would have been far too old for BIG. But who'd want to see that movie with ANYONE in it? What an awful piece of garbage. The problem is that there's hardly a Tom Hanks "movie" that I'd see with or without him. Most of that stuff is just by the numbers everyday garbage. But I can certainly see what a better movie PHILADELPHIA would have been without him. Denzel Washington should have switched roles. He would have brought far more depth to it. Hanks is your typical bland, inoffensive leading man. There's a bunch of those of his generation -- Reeves, Paxton, Pullman, others -- any of them could do those roles. It would make NO difference. -
It wasn't a "suit" at all. It was George Seaton who discovered her and put her in that film. For that alone, he should be in the hall of fame. Every year there is some idiot who writes an article titled "Why I hate IT's A WONDERFUL LIFE." I always think that he should get a lump of coal in his stocking or, more probably, a lump on his head from my coiled fist. You get that with MIRACLE too. These are people who are just trying to appear hip or cool. Like people who think being an atheist makes them "edgy" and "interesting." They don't seem to realize it just makes them look stupid.

Babs? Egads. Unfortunately, I'd only get to see around 5 films if I counted Bette Davis number one. With Stanwayck, I get to see around 40. Case closed. -

Eugenia: I'm curious as to what about STELLA DALLAS you find dated? It's certainly anachronistic but I don't find anything dated about it. It's of its time which, of course, is not what dated is all about. -

I like Brent in MY REPUTATION. It's her picture so you need a leading man who isn't going to steal any spotlight. He fills the bill. I also like him in IN THIS OUR LIFE, a film apparently only liked by me. -

Pretty much agree with you here. Except I do think she was the premiere Noir actress. Lizabeth Scott just had one emotion and even that one was dull. I often wonder what Greer would have done if she'd gotten more roles and hadn't petered out. Grahame could play cheap better than almost anyone but that's all she had so it limited her. -

"Given suitable roles?" Great actors take roles in lesser movies and turn them into gold like both Stanwyck and Crawford did during the 1950s. Davis took roles in lesser movies and turned them into even lesser films. You weren't "given" films in the 1950s. You went after them. But she wasn't getting good jobs because she had become such a gorgon, both on and off the screen. -

Yes, you could go on and on and you still wouldn't actually be saying anything. You keep repeating the same thing ... false move, blah, blah but refuse to give a single example. That makes me think you're just being contrary or whatever but I guess it isn't really worth responding to since it makes no sense. Ciao. -

Addison: your post actually made me laugh out loud that I spit out my coffee. I don't even think of Ginger Rogers as an actress. She's a star, a personality. I don't think she could "act" her way out of wet paper bag. Her Oscar for KITTY FOYLE rivals only Loretta Young's win for most ludicrous Oscar win of the 1940s. I don't get this post at all unless it was meant tongue in cheek. She couldn't have done a single one of those roles. Every time she "tried" to act you got something like MAJOR AND THE MINOR or her hilarious -- unintentional -- rendition of La Marseillese in BARKLEY's of BROADWAY which is supposed to convince us what a serious actress she was. She was a GREAT star. She was never a great actress. Not by a long shot. -

There isn't a single Tom Hanks performance that couldn't have been done by ANY other actor of his generation. Not a single one. Heck, that soccer ball in CAST AWAY was more compelling. Remember that chimp they sent to the moon? How about him? -

Oh, lord, someone who thinks THE MATRIX "broke so much ground and opened the eyes of the public?" Seriously. Movies really did start before the 1990s and, in fact, there has been very little ground broken since the death of D.W. Griffith. That being said, I think the LORD OF THE RINGS movies are among the finest achievements in all of film history. I'd have no problem having them on such a list. But THE MATRIX is just a reasonably entertaining sci-fic film with a leaden lead actor and a lot of special effects. It's not some landmark in cinema history that needs to be preserved nationally. -
The prolific character actor with the familiar face, Cliff Osmond, has died at the age of 75. He appeared in dozens of films in the 60s and 70s and beyond most notably, perhaps, in 4 films by Billy Wilder -- IRMA LA DOUCE, THE FRONT PAGE, THE FORTUNE COOKIE, and KISS ME STUPID.
