  1. I didn't "denigrate" anyone. And to equate "any religous holiday" with a made-up "holiday" like Kwanzaa is an equivalence I simply don't accept. I'm sorry -- and I think it's fair -- to say that the vast majority of thinking people believe that Kwanzaa is a joke and it provokes laughter not celebration. If you don't wish to recognize that, I understand. But I don't think that just because a few people celebrate something that most people think is a joke and made-up is a reason to pretend that it is somehow deserving of the same kind of respect or recognition that one gives to Christmas or Ramadan or Hanukah.
  2. I looked it up and finally found some information on how to post photos. Bottom line: it's way too complicated. Most sights just let you click the link in your photo directory and upload and there it is. This seems to require much more than that. I simply don't have that kind of time. To answer your question, nope. But you've said that BS is vastly overrated about a million times. No one is able to change your mind. I just simply asking why continue to post it every time her name comes up? If it were me, I would find that a complete waste of time. It almost seems like it offends you that 99.9% of the fim world disagrees with you on this one and you can't do anything about it
  3. I see everything that opens on Broadway (usually in previews). I don't care what the critics say. They usually have no frame of reference beyond the works of Tony Kushner. I thought it was awful although not as bad as the current revival of THE HEIRESS which was worse. There was nothing awkward about Stanwyck's work at this point in her career. Not a thing. If it were 1929, maybe, but by 1939 everything was perfection. Period. Here ended the lesson.
  4. Swithin: I'm just curious. Do you believe if you continue to say that Barbara is "over-rated" over and over again that eventually critical consensus will swing in your favor? It probably won't but I guess that's not stopping you Btw, I'd be happy to share some of my Stanwyck pics from my collection but I have no idea how to attach/post them here and can't find any information to help me do that.
  5. I'll have to respectfully disagree on all accounts. I think the current Broadway revival is a complete joke. To think that that wimpy guy is supposed to be believable as a boxer? Where? In a bathhouse in Greenwich Village? He's simply awful. The movie, however, is a gem. Stanwyck is terrific, Holden is perfect and without that performance he would never have had the career he had. It's a terrific and honest film. I love it.
  6. Swithin: with all due respect, if you're offering critique in order to "tone down what is too-effusive praise" then I find that rather presumptious. The only reason to offer any critique is because it is your sincerely held belief not to try and just counter what the vast majority of others are saying. Just my two cents.
  7. With all due respect to the great Eugenia, the critical consensus that Barbara Stanwyck is "the greatest thing since sliced bread" was reached a long time ago. It's only being echoed here.
  8. As Barbara herself said at her last public appearance ... "I can't walk on water."
  9. I just assume that if you're posting it, it must be your opinion unless you state it's the opinion of someone else. I think all those other qualifiers are rather redundant.
  10. Yes, and written in 1947. Which sort of makes my point.
  11. I'm trying to think of a major star whose sex appeal lasted a shorter period of time than Brando's? Can't come up with one. Gorgeous one minute, fat and disgusting the next. When I think of him shirtless in the 1950s (as long as he doesn't open his mouth which is a real non-starter for me) it's a wonderful sight but then I think of him looking like a whale in LAST TANGO and I think "what a waste and a shame."
  12. I also love his under his breath "fat man." "Catastrophe? That is good?" He was a gem.
  13. It's funny how certain things strike us all differently. I remember when I first heard that Davy Jones had died all I could think of was that "locker." It took me a while to figure out who it was. But when I heard the news that Connie Wald died -- a name probably unfamiliar to most -- I felt instant recognition and pain. Same with Jenny Tomasin. Sometimes people we think everyone knows are not known to large segments of the public.
  14. At least Cinco de Mayo is real.
  15. And he's much better playing the Nazi than the Nazi hunter! BOYS FROM BRAZIL is notable also for containing what I think may be the worst performances ever from a major star: Gregory Peck. It is simply so bad that it has to be seen to be believed.
  16. James: Sorry, I just don't know what you think is "insulting" in the post.
  17. Sans: what a great experience but I don't remotely see the comparison or the analogy. Who wouldn't to be surprised by a great trip? But tell to read a book or watch a movie that I don't know the first thing about? Well, sorry Frank Morgan, that's a horse of a different color.
  18. Lonesome: no flaws? Seriously? And unless your'e a man, I don't think he'd be much interested in marrying you Not that there's anything wrong with that. This is a deeply flawed film and I think the only appeal Kaye would have to modern audiences is as a camp factor. Have you ever seen the film in a theater? It's hilarious but it's because the audiences make complete fun of him and laugh hysterically -- in the wrong way -- at his over-the-top effeminate antics. When one talks about "dated" this film could be a prime example. It's so artificial.
  19. I don't much like that number with the man wearing matching shoes? Where was his purse? And that horribly artificial outdoor set. Egads. Ah, if only Astaire had done the film. It would have been far better. I also think that his does that Schtick through the whole movie. In every song including Sisters where he's prancing all over the place and a couple duets with Crosby when he hams up the song. Gosh, he would make my list of top 5 all time annoying film stars. It's good moments overwhelm the worst but I'll never have it in my top Christmas movies.
  20. Absolutely. Someone made a comment about "elitists" and I was just responding. Elitists aren't always right.
  21. In the immortal words of Jessica Tandy from DRIVING MISS DAISY, "I think I'm going to spit up."
