Instilling modern values on antiquated (for better or worse) sensibilites has been going on since the Inquisition. So while I sympathize, better in the long run to embrace change than fight it. Might as well try & stop the sun from coming up in the morning. And more to the point, I for one happen to love TCM's original programming.

6. Cary Grant physically based his character on Harold Lloyd.

Margaret O'Brien is quite simply the greatest child star of all time. Robert, when are you going to do a "Private Screenings" interview with her (yes, I know she was in the child stars interview but I want one of her by herself)? If you doubt my veracity, check out this clip:

I discovered classic movies on my own back in the 80's. Strange as it sounds, I felt like I had discovered this magical & wonderful new world--and yet it had already happened mostly before I was even born. Ah, what bliss to discover Spencer Tracy & Brando & Bogart & Ingrid Bergman, et al, for the first time.

My screen name is an homage to two people. The first letter is the first initial of Paul Newman's (my favorite actor) & turman is the last name of my favorite producer (Lawrence Turman).

The Monkees, despite what people think now, had some great songs. This was mainly due to the fact that they had some great songwriters like Neil Diamond & Michael Martin Murphy who wrote their songs. Here's another personal favorite:

2. Peter Bogdanovich remade this movie in the early 70's as an homage to Howard Hawks. Called WHAT'S UP DOC, it had Ryan O'Neal in the Cary Grant part & Barbra Streisand in the Katharine Hepburn part.

In all seriousness, Debra, maybe your infatuation has something to do with the fact that in GRAPES OF WRATH Carradine plays a very admirable character. Casey is kind, compassionate, smart, adventurous, selfless, & ultimately sacrifices his life for the greater good. I take my hat off to you. It's kinda refreshing to see somebody attracted to what's on the inside instead of just looks.

You're welcome! And thank you for the SHANE post. Another great classic from George Stevens. Also thank you for the Monkees song on the other thread.
BTW, how's your toe, Casablanca?

I live in Texas & this movie soooo captures the Texan mentality. 55 years later & nothing has changed.

It always felt to me like Hemmingway should've been who wrote TREASURE OF THE SIERRE MADRE. Maybe he was B. Travers.

That's cool, Swithin! From what I understand, he wasn't a professional actor.

Anybody else love this wonderful movie written, directed, & produced by Elia Kazan? I love Kazan but had never seen this movie until a couple of nights ago. To be honest, I was avoiding it as I was afraid it would just be a dry history lesson. It was a history lesson but so much more. I was moved to tears at the end. "Hey you! Let's go, you! Get going, you!" Now it's my favorite Kazan film along with ON THE WATERFRONT & EAST OF EDEN.

That's my favorite Monkee's song, Casablanca. Here's my second favorite:

7. Before directing SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, Alexander McKendrick made a name for himself directing movies for Ealing Studios in England.

I've never seen THE EXORCIST. I hate scary movies.

Right again, misswonderly. The regular users of these messageboards are polite, considerate, & genuinely interested in other users' opinions. Every now & then somebody (like the creator of this thread) comes along & stirs up the anthill so that's always interesting.
