Along those same lines, james, I remember as a kid in the 70's knowing who Orson Welles was. He was that big, heavyset guy with the beard who smoked big cigars, did a lot of commercials, & was on a lot of game shows & talk shows. So imagine my pleasent surprise to discover who he REALLY was when I discovered classic movies.

In the Heat of the Night (1967)

Johnny Depp was in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS with Wynona Ryder
Wynona Ryder was in BEATLEJUICE with Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin was in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS with Alan Arkin
Alan Arkin was in CATCH 22 with Orson Welles
Orson Welles was in LONG HOT SUMMER with Paul Newman
Next: Dennis Quaid

To get back to the subject of the thread, one of my favorite lines is:
"What we got here is failure to communicate" (which seems appropriate)

Gotta love politcs. Two people who would normally like each other don't because they were brought up to see the world from a different viewpoint. They're both right & they're both left (I mean wrong).

Bogart is John
Ingrid is Paul
Henreid is George
Rains is Ringo

Yeah, I've noticed that too. And I would add Jennifer Lopez to that list.
-
Yeah, I miss him too. I hope he knows how much we love him.
Are you listening, Robert?
WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!
-
Speaking of north vs. south, anybody else seen THE CONSPIRATOR? Saw it tonight & thought it was great.
-
Be honest with yourself. You don't like him cause of his politics. Am I wrong? He has a great repartee with Robert. Compare him to Rose McGowan. She was great but I always sensed Robert was walking on eggshells, afraid he would intimidate her with his knowledge & intellect or something. But with Alec, they both can say whatever they want without fear of offending the other. Sure, Alec's been on longer than other co-hosts or hosts & I agree it's time for a change, but personally I like their "chemistry"--Robert knows everything under the sun about classic Hollywood (which Alec doesn't) but Alec, being an actor, has been in the trenches in a way that Robert hasn't (and yes, I know Robert used to be an actor).

Jack Benny was in TO BE OR NOT TO BE with Carole Lombard
Carole Lombard was in NOTHING SACRED with Fredric March
Fredric March was in HOMBRE with Paul Newman
Next: Charlie Sheen

Hmm . . .what's it rated, Face?

Worked out a little better for Travis, I think.

I think you're right, James. And that's one of the reasons movies suck nowadays. Stars aren't the best judge of what good writing is or what their strengths are. But nowadays it's the star who rules the roost--who decides who gets cast, how a script is rewritten, etc. The star is boss instead of Ford or Hitchcock or Capra.

Not quite! Just wanted to say I think darkblue did an excellent job defining "method" acting (or at least as it relates to Stanislavsky's approach). That's about as good a definition I've ever heard. There is nothing fake about the emotions the actor feels as he or she truthfully experiences what their character experiences. That's the theory, anyway.

Back to the subject of the thread . . .
Five years old, backseat of my parents' Corvair at the drive-in, watching two guys (one of them couldn't swim) jump off a cliff. I'm guessin you know the name of the movie.
-
Good choices, Eugenia. Funny but I just realized Brief Encounter is the same plot as Bridges of Madison County. Your description could have been about either film.
-
Now I really wanna see it!!
-
Yeah, that girl's got it goin' on.
-
Of course, misswonderly!!
HOW COULD I FORGET CASABLANCA!!!???
(Lord forgive this miserable sinner)
-
And he was great as Frank Sinatra's drug dealer in "Man with the Golden Arm"
(sorry, just thought I'd throw in that little "aside")
Your thread, MontyC . . .

Thanks. I don't get those channels. Cause only one in 100 movies is worth watching--which is why I watch TCM!!!

What are your five favorite love stories? Say why if you want but not required.
I hope this subject hasn't been done to death. If it has, please forgive me. Here are mine in no particular order:
1. *The Way We Were*--At the beginning you think she's not good enough for him. Turns out he's not good enough for her.
2. *Wuthering Heights*--Ah, if only we weren't so good at deceiving ourselves & the true desires of our heart.
3. *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*--Makes you really think about why you fell for that certain someone. And would we do anything different, if we could, to change that special relationship.
4. *Out of Africa*--Can we love someone without trying to change them? Can we love without being loved in return?
5. *Breakfast at Tiffainy's*--It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you. You better let somebody love you before it's too late.

Central Casting here. We need a guy to play a real cad, so get me...

And I only thought of him because I've just watched a very nicely edited and scored YouTube video tribute of the gentleman which was done by Monik(one of our TCM website members) of...Conrad Veidt.
