Do You Get Your Friends Into TCM?
EugeniaH replied to RooseveltSteinway's topic in General Discussions
I was able to get my good friend to watch *The Lady Eve* because I figured it was funny enough and manic enough to keep her interested (I also made sure to pick a romantic comedy). She and her fiancee watched it and both loved it, and afterward she called me up to go on and on about what she liked about it... But it didn't turn her into a big classic movie nut, that I know of. Oh well, I'm just glad that she cared enough about me to watch it, and I'm glad she genuinely liked it. (It would have been fine if she didn't, but the fact that she did was a kind of 'vindication' for me, a moment of, "See? Black and white movies don't have to be stodgy!") -
Bette, I wish I could find such a wealth of early photos of Stanwyck - great work on your part!

Topbilled - terrific idea for a thread! You're right, there is a difference. Still, there's all kinds of ways one can define "essential". How about essential in terms of a movie that heralded in a new era of filmmaking? So, *The Jazz Singer* would be considered essential - it was the first talkie. (or are you asking which classic movies people consider not "essential"?) Edited by: EugeniaH on Nov 5, 2011 2:25 PM

The real Bette Davis must be smiling down on you. This is wonderful. I love looking at old pictures like this no matter who it is.

What an incredible idea!! I can't wait to see how that comes out. Good luck...!!

*What do you guys think (Eugenia?)?* She certainly was a cutie, all right! Looks like she loved the camera even then! B-)

I haven't seen that movie in soooooooo long...

*one of the 75 houses that she lived in.* Wow, really?? Is this from childhood on, or from the time she arrived in Hollywood? ?:|

Hi Terrence, According to IMDB, it was *Blazing Saddles* (1974).
-
The whole cast works together really well. The humor is tongue in cheek but enjoyable. And a lot of us (though not myself) can relate to the problems of purchasing/building a house and all of the hidden costs, etc. They tried to do the same thing with *The Money Pit*, but I don't know - I didn't like that one as much.
-
For me it would be *Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House*. It's a "comfort movie" of sorts - nothing there to make you worry or upset or even think too much. And Cary Grant to look at. What more could you ask?
-
My favorite above all is *A Christmas Carol* with Alistair Sim. Then, in no order: *A Charlie Brown Christmas* (yes, it's true I'm 43. However!), *Remember the Night* and *Xmas in CT*. *The Bishop's Wife* - that's another one. Edited by: EugeniaH on Nov 2, 2011 5:07 PM

Imagine that line with this photo: She still looks better than the rat on Joan Crawford's plate.

*Here's one of her being flung around in Thank Your Lucky Stars!* I was just about to post this same picture! :^0 Okay, I'll leave you to it!

My favorites are (in no order): Treasure of the Sierra Madre Key Largo The Caine Mutiny To Have and Have Not

Classic Film Poseurs, Phonies...Ugh!

It should be "noy-ure". Just joshin' you, JR. I'd also like to know. I've always said it like "no-aar". -
Somewhat Off-Topic: What have you been reading lately?
EugeniaH replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
Right now I'm in the midst of reading *Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel*, the "lost" Marx Brothers radio program scripts from 1932. It's a repeat read, actually. It's funny (naturally)... they borrowed a lot of material for or from their movies. Groucho is Flywheel, a lawyer, and Chico is Ravelli, his assistant. Harpo wasn't a good fit for radio, so he didn't appear. Audiences didn't hear him honking his horn. -
I would have sworn you would have said the Christmas episode of Maude, mrroberts... :^0

She still looks light years better here than in the *Now Voyager* pic, though.

What was turner classic movies like back in the day

You're right - I saw Gleason dancing a number of times on The Honeymooners. He was great! ...But maybe not as good as Carney doing "The Hucklebuck". -

Absolutely, MovieGal! WOR 9 and Million Dollar Movie, the Abbott and Costello movies on WPIX 11... They showed a lot of old movies in NY back in the 70s. I have strong memories of The Best Years of Our Lives and being upset by the "hooks" of the returned soldier... I also saw a lot of Ginsu commercials (responding to Dargo's post) . Hey Dargo (another reference to "infomercials" of a sort), "can it core a apple?" Edited by: EugeniaH on Oct 30, 2011 2:29 PM -

*And do you also remember the* *'National Anthem' being played, before all telecasting ended for the night and the* *'Test Patterns', too ?* Wow, ugaarte, yes, I do, on both counts! Now instead of test patterns we get infomercials, which is even lower quality viewing than the test patterns. -

*If Studio 54 were open today, a 500-pound guy would NEVER have to wait in line.* Yeah, but who'd want to dance with him?
