  1. Speedy, I just finished watching "Lucy Goes to the Hospital." I should have put this episode on my list of very favorites of I Love Lucy, earlier in this thread. I think it has more laugh out loud moments than a lot of eps, which is saying a lot! The reactions are exaggerated for comic effect, but the premise is real. And Ricky's reactions, especially at the end, were poignant because Lucille Ball was expecting, etc.

  2. Is this bad? I'd like to pretty much nominate a majority of children from various films, because they're so annoying.  There are only a handful of child actors who I don't find annoying.

I especially found the two little girls in Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House to be annoying.  It was something about their prissiness, yet overly polite demeanor, I don't know if I can describe it.

    "Father!!"

That's another movie I could recite almost line by line. :)

They were definitely irritating, but luckily they weren't that much part of the main plot, and Cary/Myrna always had a sarcastic retort to their behavior.

  3. Turns out I'd already read the Meryl article and forgotten. (LOL) Not much to it. Only talked about her relationship with John Cazale and his tragic death.

I like Meryl Streep, but seeing her again recently in Out of Africa, I had to hold my eyelids open to stay awake.  Maybe it was the ponderous plot, or the acting, I don't know.  It just didn't send me...

  4. The Devil specifically doesn't show up, although George Sanders might give the impression of devilry, there's a wish cast without a thought in front of an Egyptian cat statue, and that's about as much exposition on the mystical elements as we get.

so unless you think cats= the devil, i'm not sure you can really bring The Horned Prince into this thing (much as i generally like to.)

I meant to respond to this earlier - my oopsie.  Thanks, Lorna!  :)

  5. Mr. Furley cracked me up. Jack was always my favorite character. I also liked Mrs. Roper and all her fabulous caftans.

I saw Norman Fell (Mr. Roper) the other night on an episode of The Fugitive.  He played a law enforcer bigwig (lieutenant or captain or somesuch).  He still looked exactly the same, with the same monotone voice, but obviously a lot younger. ;)

I had a HUGE crush on John Ritter as a young teenager.  I used to cut pictures of him out of magazines.  Sad to say, though, I can't get into Three's Company anymore.  It's a little too silly for me.

  6. (ahem)

    "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"

I've spent a fair amount of time in India, which has its share of rats.  My worst experience ever was when a friend standing near me reached into a laundry basket that had been in storage, and a rat suddenly leaped out and got out through a window.  And we were in a very clean building/area.  I'll tell you, I ran away so fast that if I were in the Olympics, I'd be polishing my gold medal right now.

  7. A lady friend of mine was so terrified by Blair Witch that she literally had trouble sleeping for a couple of nights afterward. Totally baffled me.

I had a nightmare the night I saw it (only two movies in my life gave me nightmares, and that was one).  It was a replaying of the final scene.  Ugh.  But after that first night I was able to cope...

  8. THE SHINING is one of the verrrry few books of his that has any nuance, anything going on deeper beneath the surface than just a book about a killer car or killer machines or killer clowns who live in the sewer and turn out to be space aliens.

Couldn't agree with you more on the above.

I hear what you're saying with some of the book's details being lost on screen, but for me it doesn't matter.  No doubt Kubrick had movie time constraints, although yeah, maybe he cut in the wrong places.  I still think The Shining is a great flick. :)

  9. I guess it's not possible, after all these years, Eugenia, that you don't know the twist ending of The Sixth Sense.

But if, by chance, you don't know the ending, please stick your fingers in your ears right now and don't remove them until you see the film. And should you see the lips of someone ask you why your fingers are in your ears, just tell them they're stuck.

Believe me, no matter what kind of weird looks you get (maybe really weird, I admit), it will be well worth it for you if you don't know the film's surprise ending in advance. And forget all those posters here who said they guessed it half way through. They're just trying to impress us. Believe me, they didn't guess it.

At least I'm being totally honest with you when I say I couldn't see the ending coming.

I'm sure I read or heard the ending at some point, but luckily in this case my memory's faltered.  :)

  10. Here's a title that makes me slap my forehead (as in, "Why didn't I think of this one"?)  ...The Shining.

I probably don't have to write a complete synopsis for most regular posters here, but briefly, a family spends a winter at a hotel where a ghost incites the writer father into deranged behavior, and the writer's son has a lot of psychic premonitions.  The legendary Jack Nicholson stars in this all-time classic.  If you feel like losing a night's sleep, or need a reason to reach for the nearest teddy bear, run, don't walk, to watch this movie!

  11. Thank you Eugenia for starting a thread we all can talk about civilly without pretense.

I've been trying to watch all M. Night Shyamalan's movies. I like the stories & subjects he chooses. I was uncomfortable with WOMAN IN THE WATER only because of my personal fear of drowning. Otherwise...well I remember liking it, but don't remember anything about it.

Oh and I just LOVE Bruce Willis, I'm glad others like him too. I hate his choice of movies most of the time, so SIXTH SENSE was welcome. I first fell in love with him in MOONLIGHTING and absolutely think I was first attracted to my husband because of his slight resemblance to Bruce Willis. (dum bass)

You're welcome.  And I so appreciate all the great suggestions made here.  I need to start thinking more of other supernatural/spiritual movies to talk about.  I'm also glad that so far the thread hasn't been completely derailed by other subjects, to the point of no return, as sometimes happens.

I adore Bruce Willis, but I have not seen "The Sixth Sense".  I really need to make a point of watching it.  And as for your being attracted to your husband because of his slight resemblance to that good-looker, no sane woman could blame ya!

Has "Rosemary's Baby" been mentioned yet?  I'm assuming it has...

  12. Cavegirl - I absolutely alphabetize my DVD's. You have to, or how would you find the one you wanted?

My DVDs are categorized first by favorite actors: all Cary Grant movies, Tracy/Hebpurn movies, Jean Arthur movies, etc.

After that, they are organized by period of time - 1920s films, 1930s films, 1940s films, etc.

When I think about what movie I want to watch, first I think about what time period I want to be transported to on that day.  Or I think to myself, "I want to watch a Clark Gable movie," and I can look in one place for them, rather than going through the whole shebang.

After the movies are the TV show DVDs, in chronological order, then the "extras" like documentaries, music video collections, etc. :)

  13. Whoa, was that the new "Stepford Wives" or the original, Eugenia?

    Love ITHOTN!

That Ken Burns really does make the best documentaries. They are the sine qua non, of documentaries because I think he tries to unearth every bit of film, photos and other artifacts to delineate the stories without worrying about how long it will take of what it will cost. I will watch documentaries of his on topics that otherwise I would not even care about.

Thanks for your response and you are now a charter member of the DVDSNC!

Yes, should have specified - the original!  It was so shocking the first time i watched it, and I can't wait to see it again.

I try to get movies that I've already seen and liked (so that I don't waste too much money), and I love ITHOTN too...  I just finished The Civil War and it was very emotional.  I think Ken Burns brought documentary filmmaking to a whole new level; it's "entertaining", not just "a learning experience".

I'll go on DVD "binges" and buy many over a short period of time.  Other DVDs I got recently were Cape Fear, The Omen, Our Gang Silents (3 volumes), Lazybones, "The Fugitive" series, and on and on.

  14. Welcome to the bi-weekly meeting of the DVD Shopaholic Nonanonymous Club.

    Lol, you're singing my song...

Speaking of only very recently, I bought DVDs of Stepford Wives, In the Heat of the Night, and The Civil War by Ken Burns.

  15. THE HAUNTING OF M (1981) Directed by Anna Thomas. If you like movies that create an air of supernatural and spiritual suspense with no blood, guts, nudity or cuss words this is the movie for you.

Ooh, that sounds like one for me! ;)

(Well, I'm not that prudish, but I have a low threshold for gore...)

I'm still waiting for The Innocents to come in the mail via classicflix.com, and I'm looking forward to checking it out. I haven't read all the posts about this movie on this thread in detail; I want to be surprised.
