Another suggestion for king/queen of comedy would be Grant and Dunne. They are terrific together and seemed born to pair up.
With *In Name Only*, I always thought also, that it was the only time Grant and Lombard were together in a film, but actually they were also together in *The Eagle and the Hawk*:

(I liked this movie...)

*Comedy - Grant Lombard*
Ironic that you have these two as king/queen of comedy when they starred together in a melodrama! :^0
-
Another idea: Who would be people's choices for King/Queen of genres? (e.g. Lombard for screwball comedy, Veronica Lake or Stanwyck for noir, etc.)

Thanks, clore. Interesting read.

On another note, I wonder why they did vote Loy the Queen. Was she the biggest box office draw at that time?
-
-
At the time Gable was crowned the "King of Hollywood" (year, anyone?) Myrna Loy was voted the "Queen".

I had the idea of an audience watching a big screen filled with classic Bugs Bunny cartoons during my funeral...

pturman, thank you! Simon & Garfunkel is one of my all-time favorites, and *The Graduate* is the same. There was another thread at one time on "favorite tribute videos" but that stopped so I'm glad you are reviving the idea.

clore, when I first read that comment I laughed out loud! I should have responded to you then, but I guess I wasn't feeling so chatty.

Thanks to FrankGrimes, I now know how to post pictures (speaking of "grasping trouble"). So yeah, I'll get on that if need be!
-
Okay. But if you get confused, I'll try to write one-syllable words only.

Agreed, Dargo. finance, you're one of the sharper tools in the shed around here, trust me!
-
Dargo, someone, somewhere made a really funny comment about Wendell Corey and Lizbeth Scott acting together in a movie and they only had one facial expression between the two of them... Funny also that I've seen a picture or two of Corey off the set and he still had that same singular facial expression. I think if I knew him I could barely resist lighting a firecracker under him.

*I went as Imhotep. Full makeup. On the subway. Nobody noticed.*
Oh, for sure you must have been in New York!
-
Dargo, it would be interesting if Ralph Bellamy, who was such a loser in the movies, was a wolf and a "lady-killer" off the set!

Favorite Joel McCrea movies (in no particular order after the first one):
Sullivan's Travels
The More the Merrier
Internes Can't Take Money
The Great Man's Lady
The Palm Beach Story

Robertson also starred in one of the great Twilight Zone episodes, THE DUMMY, about a tormented, alcoholic ventriloquist who is ruled by his dummy. In the end, they switch roles in a macabre way. One of the creepiest episodes in the series, and is similar to one of the segments in the film, DEAD OF NIGHT.

Thanks, krieger, I appreciate your posting the comprehensive list - not to mention the cheaper price!

{font:Calibri}Laurel and Hardy: The Essential Collection is slated for release on October 25th by RHI Entertainment. It will be a 10-disc set with 58 talking shorts and feature films, transferred in high definition and digitally enhanced. It includes a film guide and two hours of special features.{font}
From what I read on ClassicFlix.com, it will sell for $99.98 retail but will be available at ClassicFlix for $74.99.
The availability of good L&H DVDs has been just about nil, so I’m really looking forward to this!

"Today, being Saturday, might be tied between Ricardo Cortez, William Powell, and Gordon Scott!

And, oh wait, Bogie is on later too, though not one of his sexiest roles, he's definitely a sexy dude!"
Mark, voting between Saturday's choices, I choose Ricardo.

With Bogie, I never considered him sexy, but the other day I rewatched To Have and Have Not, and my opinion started changing! He and Bacall together - flaming.

Hi Thelma,
I'm really enjoying reading your informative posts, very articulate and in-depth, and looking forward to reading whatever you create in "Favorites" (or wherever else!).
(Update): Sorry, filmlover, you too. I've been reading your '1939' thread since the first day.

They also would go to the birthplace of Jesse James, as I understand it.

Anyone like Laurence Olivier AND the Three Stooges?

Absolutely! I can watch *Rebecca* and I can watch the Stooges! I probably couldn't see one right after the other, though - I have to be in a certain/different 'mood' for each.
One further remark on the Stooges: they are most famously known for their physical comedy, but a lot of credit needs to be given to their extremely hilarious one-liners. Curly in particular, would crack me up with his jokes that would come at you so fast but make you rock with laughter. Wish I could think of specifics, but I'm sure others know what I mean.
