December Star of the Month: BARBARA STANWYCK
EugeniaH replied to SueSueApplegate's topic in General Discussions
*I think the main reason I couldn't warm to Sorry, Wrong Number is that it's one of the few Stanwyck films I've seen where neither of the two main characters---in fact almost none of the characters, big or small, seemed to have a single redeeming feature. Usually in her "darker" movies there's at least something about either Stanwyck or her male co-lead that's vaguely sympathetic, but in the case of SWN it's hard to think of anything about either her or Lancaster that isn't just plain creepy. You might be able to say that about Double Indemnity, too, but that one had both Edward G. Robinson and a much better plot. I've seen SWN twice now, and I'm not sure it'll necessarily improve the third time around, which is something I'd never say for just about any other Stanwyck film I can think of.* Interesting POV, Andy. I think one reason why I feel that Lancaster doesn't work is that his character just isn't very 'dynamic'. I don't feel that his character is very interesting to watch. I think part of that is the actor's mis-fit in the role but maybe it's the writing moreso. I find Stanwyck's character sympathetic because even though she has her flaws, she is still suffering. How do you think the characters are "creepy"? Interesting. I find no sympathy at all for Phyllis in DI, but yes, it had better drawn characters and a better plot. Speaking of DI, I love the scene where Phyllis and hubby are walking toward the car on their way to the train station, and Phyllis talks "casually" to him and calls him "honey", all with her devious plans in mind, lol. -

*I was hoping to get some feedback from her...* Thanks, L.E. I need to take a break from the boards for a bit but couldn't resist responding to your post. Here's my take on these films: *Sorry, Wrong Number* - I thought the film was 'ok' when I saw it, but watching it again a second time I was much more impressed. Some have thought that Stanwyck's acting was over the top and grating, but I think her behavior is plausible in context to her condition and the circumstances and her character. It is pretty suspenseful even though it's just Stanwyck in a room making phone calls and reacting. I had mentioned somewhere that Robert Mitchum may have been better in the Lancaster role; even though Lancaster's character was supposed to be weak, I think he underplayed it too much. I love the way they filmed the ending - very well done, very creepy. *The Maverick Queen* - It was okay, but I need to see it again because I don't remember it that strongly to point out specific details. I like her and Scott Brady's repartee with one another and she's more of a match for him than Barry Sullivan... Though maybe her character wanted a more "stable" fellow. Yes, I remember that she did have a lot of makeup on! *These Wilder Years* - She and Cagney were good together, yep, should have been paired more often, and earlier, most preferably in the early 30s, but oh well. As a 1950s drama I much more prefer *No Man of Her Own* (1950), which had a lot more layers to it, but it was okay. I would definitely see it again. The young actress playing the pregnant teenager was pretty good. -
*But you've said that BS is vastly overrated about a million times. No one is able to change your mind. I just simply asking why continue to post it every time her name comes up? If it were me, I would find that a complete waste of time.* *It almost seems like it offends you that 99.9% of the fim world disagrees with you on this one and you can't do anything about it * Filmgoddess, thanks so much for voicing this opinion. It's been running through my mind for a while now, but I never brought it up because I figured my comment would be immediately dismissed: "Of course Eugenia would say that, she's obsessed," or, "Just like the Garbo fan," etc. Look, I stick by my belief: everyone has a right to their opinion. I do respect Swithin and he knows a lot more about films than I do. But honestly, his constant tirades are bewildering to me, It seems like it's quite the issue for him. Well, one of my New Year's resolutions is to spend more time off line and focus on the other wonderful things I have going on, so this may be a good time to bow out (at least for the forseeable future)...
-
It's true - there are movies where I felt her acting was forced, like in Executive Suite. But the bigger issue for me is, though, that I don't want to be one of those posters who annoy with their particular interests. To my credit, I've never started more than one thread about B.S. (even the SOTM thread was started by someone else). Because if the collective lot of you are rolling your eyes at me, then I'm history here.
-
But I've never said that, nor have I ever attacked anyone who has disagreed with me. People have their own opinions. I don't think I've influenced anyone.
-
Okay, no one is responding to my post. It must be me... ?:|

*Ditto. But you don't wanna give Miss Barbara fans any ideas. I can see somebody already getting the canonization process going...* Hey, I hope it's not me people are referring to. I admit to being enthusiastic about her movies but I never once said she was a saint, was better than any other actress, or was without flaws. B-)

*Some people have used expressions in their posts such as "just my two cents;" or "this is just my opinion...;" or even apologizing for not agreeing about a film. Those, of course, go without saying. Anything we post is obviously just our two cents and just our opinion, apart from hard, verifiable facts.* I prefer to use these expressions once in a while, one because there are people who are more sensitive (and I hate conflict), and two, I think in the electronic age there is more potential for misinterpreting what someone says. We don't know who we're talking to here, and what a person really means (no chance to read body language, etc.). I think it just shows respect for the other person's views, even if I don't agree with their opinion.

I'm watching this now - what an incredible movie. I certainly have no problem with TCM showing newer films when they are high quality like this. Love Anthony Hopkins and Morgan Freeman - two modern greats.

OT: What is your New Year's Resolution???
EugeniaH replied to newclassicfilmfan's topic in General Discussions
Mine are run of the mill, like improving health and finances, and then there is focusing on 'training' for a promotion I'm moving into in 2013. As for keeping my resolutions, I don't guarantee anything beyond the second week in January, but if I'm motivated enough to reach a goal, I can be pretty darn stubborn. -

What are Your New Year's Eve Plans?
EugeniaH replied to newclassicfilmfan's topic in General Discussions
No big plans for me outside of staying home and watching movies, like SansFin and Capuchin. I'm not a big party person, and if I'm going to be doing any drinking with friends and loved ones, I need to be safe at home so I don't have to drive. -
*I don't watch any movie with the "Toms" in it .... was it actually written for that movie? I think of movie songs as songs that were written for a movie not just on the soundtrack.* I'm not sure. I haven't seen 'Cocktail', either. I was originally commenting on Calamity's great list of "dreadful movie songs", and that kind of snowballed into a joke with Dargo. When you originally asked where the Bobby McFerrin song came from, I had to look it up.
-
*That is an awful song and I didn't know that it was from a movie. Which one?* It was included on the 'Cocktail' soundtrack, as was "Kokomo".

Jake, speaking of Stanwyck in television, I came across an interesting blurb from a 1932 (yes, I have the year correct ) issue of Motion Picture Magazine, where they labeled Stanwyck as an "ideal Television type". The main article is called "Will Television Mean the End of Garbo?" Here is the blurb: I found the article and magazine by going to the Media History Digital Library website, which poster VP19 recommended to us a few times: http://mediahistoryproject.org/ This link should go directly to the article - I hope it works: http://archive.org/stream/motionpicture42moti#page/n247/mode/2up/search/stanwyck Edited by: EugeniaH (correcting the year to 1932) -
*210* Try as they might to film a successful "Lost In Space" remake, the end result went over like a lead balloon.

*I would say Stanwyck is the most popular person on these boards, judging from the amount of replies on this thread.* She has her detractors, and also, some of us are posting a lot ... For me, as said before, even if Stanwyck was or is deemed to be less talented than many other actresses, I still get so much out of watching her films. Of course, I have other favorite actresses too, and do have Hepburn and Davis, etc. DVDs at home... Thank goodness for TCM, and modern technology that gives us access to these 70+ year old films.
