  1. *Eugenia: I'm curious as to what about STELLA DALLAS you find dated? It's certainly anachronistic but I don't find anything dated about it. It's of its time which, of course, is not what dated is all about.*

Maybe 'anachronistic' is a better word. I don't see a movie like that being popular today, whereas I think a movie like *The Lady Eve* could play well today. I got a couple of friends of mine, who usually only like modern films, to watch TLE and they loved it.

  2. *I would actually nominate Ginger Rogers as an actress whose versatility rivaled Stanwyck's- only Rogers was nowhere near as smart about her career choices or as bold in her later performances as Stanwyck. I actually think Rogers could have pulled off Ball of Fire (which she stupidly turned down), Sorry, Wrong Number, Stella Dallas, Lady Eve and (don't laugh) even Double Indeminity. She had the talent, but lacked the savvy/guts/luck(?) that Stanwyck did.*

Rogers could have easily done *Lady of Burlesque*, too. *DI* would be a stretch for me, but I promise, I didn't laugh. ;) Stella Dallas? Well, I don't know. You may be right, but I adore Stanwyck in this movie. SD is incredibly dated today, but I love Stanwyck's performance in it. A lot of people talk about Stella's gaudiness and cheapness later in the film but even when she was at her worst, dressed in those outfits as she tried to fit in with the wealthy, I saw a kind of "innocence" underneath, a heart that was lacking in the snobs. And that train scene!

  3. Yes, this was a surprise for me, too, Larry. I wonder why he couldn't have done a better job opposite Stanwyck and Davis. I know, he was a dependable leading man and was needed in Hollywood, but as for Stanwyck co-stars I more prefer actors like Joel McCrea and Henry Fonda (I'm sure I can think of others, but I'm in a hurry right now), where there is much more of a give-and-take chemistry. Can you see Brent as Hopsie Pike in *The Lady Eve*? Nah.

  4. I don't like "I'm on Fire", but two of my favorites on Born in the U.S.A. are "Cover Me" and "Downbound Train".... And definitely don't like "In the Air" (back to Collins again)...

Also, "Murder Incorporated" is an awesome song. It was recorded during the Born in the U.S.A. sessions but released on a Greatest Hits album.

  5. Good posts all, Filmgoddess. Yes, sorry to say that I was one of the ones that didn't "get" Forty Guns. I too hated Westerns growing up for the same reason (they all seemed the same), but now that I know more about certain classic stars I get more out of watching them (stars like Stanwyck are always fun to watch), though admittedly Westerns aren't my favorite genre in general.

I respecfully disagree with you about George Brent. I find him a little on the wooden side, especially opposite dynamic actresses like Stanwyck and Davis. But, that's just one opinion. ;)

Update: I almost forgot - I do like Brent very much in The Rains Came. He seemed to "come alive" in that film.

  6. There was one part in this film that made me chuckle. Kit Banion and Jeff Younger and Sundance are all in the house, and Jeff and Sundance are slugging it out in an all-out male brawl. There are people outside, and one of them turns and says (thinking that only Kit and Sundance are inside), "That Kit's really takin' care of herself!" (or something like that)

  7. *That song about the "whip-driving woman" (or maybe it was "the woman with the whip") at the start of Forty Guns last night was almost enough to make me stop watching right there.*

:^0 I said the same thing earlier this morning in the BS thread! The Forty Guns song was a deal-breaker and I turned off the danged movie about 15 minutes into it. Dreck!

  8. Last night was the premiere of "The Maverick Queen". Anyone have any impressions of this? I thought it was pretty good.

On the other hand, I tried to watch "Forty Guns" for the second time, and I disliked it as much as I did the first time. I didn't like the dialogue, the scenes, that ridiculous song "...High-ridin' woman with a whip..." I shut it off about 15 minutes into it. ;)
