  1. Leslie Nielsen! Back in the day my best friend and I watched "Airplane" so many times we could recite the whole script in our sleep. I tried watching it again in recent years but sadly, I was way too "used' to it.

Some of the other Naked Guns weren't as funny to me, but 33 1/3 was amazing. I first saw it in a movie theater, and I think it's the only time I laughed so loud that I disturbed the others and had to stuff my mouth!!

PS: "It's a Gift" is my favorite Fields movie.

  2. I think Stanwyck and Kruger are a great team in this movie. Kruger is also a sensitive actor. The scene with the son, with the poor dog... So sad, but it never merges into the melodramatic.

Oh, all those Capra movies! Leisure, Miracle Woman, and Forbidden. They are terrific. (General Yen is also good, but I like the others more).

Have you ever seen Internes Can't Take Money? There's another sensitive, understated performance. I like this film even better than "Heart". The storyline has a lot more depth to it, and the scenes in the orphanage are heartbreakers (even more so when you know that Stanwyck herself went from one orphanage to the next).

Edited by: EugeniaH because Otto Kruger deserves to have his name spelled correctly!

  3. Lav - I adore the Marx Brothers and W.C. Fields! With the Marx Brothers, it's the perfect combination of intelligent humor and slapstic. Even with The Three Stooges, there was some good writing in between the punches, though for me they're not on a par with the other two I mentioned.

Aargh, how to rate my most favorite funny movie!

For a more modern movie, for a great combination of silliness and great writing, I vote for Naked Gun 33 1/3. :)

  4. The thing that most surprised me personally about this movie was Fred MacMurray. As I've said in the past, I'm not a MacMurray fan at all, but when I saw him RTN again, I realized that he seemed to have grown as an actor compared to his 1930s films with Carole Lombard. It's probably a no-brainer for most, but I appreciated him just a tiny bit more.

  5. Great topic, Dothery!

So many definitions of 'funny' - satirical wit, topical jokes, physical humor... I have favorite comedies but it's hard to pick one because they are funny to me for different reasons. :)

For comedies, I think I like so-called "intelligent humor" better than physical humor. I love irony and things that are said tongue-in-cheek, without a "Ha-ha" follow up, but still make you laugh.

  6. *(like he's faking it and is really an axe murderer or something.......)*

It's funny - I know someone like that in my life. He's really dorky, and he has a quiet voice and a creepy quality so I always joke that he probably has bodies buried under his floorboards. ;)

  7. *Not in Ball of Fire, that's her voice.*

Sorry, Addison, saying respectfully, "Drum Boogie" was dubbed by Martha Tilton.

  8. I like *Remember the Night* much better than *Christmas in Connecticut*. I think sometimes *CIC* tried too hard to be funny.

Speaking of funny scenes, I liked the one in RTN where MacMurray and Stanwyck are hauled before the Justice of the Peace for trespassing the night before. The justice asks Stanwyck her occupation. "Bubble Dancer," she lies. He's confused, and she follows up with, "You know..." and makes those motions. The justice rolls his eyes and says, "Whatever that is!"

Hibi (and SueSue), I too liked the song she sang in Banjo. She's sung in other movies and doesn't have a great voice (imo), but she sounds nice here.
