Pivoting off the idea of sensitive performances, without jumping into the Sirk debate, I thought Stanwyck gave a very sensitive, understated performance in the less well-known, "Ever in My Heart". The final scene is especially heartbreaking. This one is one of my favorites.

I don't love all of Sturges' films (for example, "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek") but with or without Stanwyck "Eve" is the best of the lot, for the writing.
EDIT: After "Eve", Stanwyck sent Sturges a letter asking him to write another film for her, she was so pleased, but unfortunately that never happened.

Eh.... let's hear from other people!

Though wow, it's a triple play tonight: Remember the Night, The Lady Eve and Ball of Fire. You Belong to Me is definitely a weak vehicle for Stanwyck and Fonda (Preston, where'd you go?), I never got into Lady of Burlesque (not a strong story line and Michael O'Shea irritates me), but love Stanwyck's dancing in it, and Banjo on My Knee is cute, but not a stunner.

*All three actors (Huston, Stany and Judith Anderson) deserved nominations for their performances*
Absolutely. I think the film would be much less if any of these three weren't in it. They're such different people, but they work so well together (the refined Anderson, the tough Stanwyck and the boisterous Houston).
I like Kate Hepburn, though I haven't seen *Christopher Strong*. I have a small collection of her movies at home.

This is great, Kyle. Thanks!!

What a great thread! I'm loving these vintage pictures. Ironically, I'm reading a bio on Norman Rockwell right now and it mentions his close association with J.C. Leyendecker (two of the illustrators featured in this thread). Love Rockwell's work in particular.

Okay, I listened to the two Newman tracks you and misswonderly posted. While I have to say that I'm still not much of a fan of his voice, I googled the lyrics of the two songs and liked them. Thanks again.

1. When you can say to your now college-aged niece or nephew, "I remember the day you were born!"
2. When you speak confidently about some cultural reference and someone points out to you, "But, that was 27 years ago!"
(These are my personal experiences, anyway...)

LadyE (I see I'm going to have a lot of fun reading and responding to your posts), I'm less of a fan of a lot of Stanwycks' Westerns, like "Cattle Queen", but love her in "The Furies" (as mentioned), "California" (love her with Ray Milland; they had a great screen chemistry), and like the "fire" scene with Robinson in "The Violent Men".

I liked your post, too. Please feel free to contribute more.

Thanks much for your input, darkblue. Okay, I want to know more about him. I'm at work right now but I'll be clicking in your link later today. Stay tuned.

Today's irony: I was just thinking of a song I could post on this thread as I was on another website, and I found this link on the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees:

Randy Newman? Really?? Granted, I only know him for "I Love L.A." As for Heart, what took them so long?

(deleted - repeat post. kingrat, you and I had the same thought at the same time about Monroe!)

*That said, I do love Muni in I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG which is one of my favorite films of all time.*
Ditto. It's one of my favorites from the 1930s.

"I just love it when you rub my head like that..."

As Hibi and I discussed elsewhere, what a shame that *The Furies* isn't included in the lineup this month. Now there's a Stanwyck tour-de-force!

I don't think my age is so old (44), but I work at a university and sometimes interacting with college students makes me feel like 104. I don't get their cultural references, and the times I've referred to something from my own childhood, I get the initial look of confusion, followed by the polite smiles...

Just my opinion, of course, but I thought "Annie Oakley" was a little better than the 3 films she made before that, "The Secret Bride", "The Woman in Red" and "Red Salute" (I saw these films once and was bored to tears). I agree on "Executive Suite".

I love that Honeymooners episode, Swithin. Garde was terrific playing off Jackie Gleason.
One of my favorite exchanges happens when Norton asks Ralph if Thelma is like the actress (playing a maid) who helped Lily St. Cyr into the bathtub (in film) and Ralph responds, "She looks more like the one who installed the bathtub."
Garde was also in an episode of The Twilight Zone ("The Midnight Sun").

Ditto on Henry Fonda, movielover!

I like watching Beery and Marie Dressler on screen. They fit really well together.

*If you consider overacting, stealing...........*
It's a fine line, isn't it? I hated John Barrymore in *Twentieth Century* but I liked him in *True Confession*. I guess sometimes overplaying it works and sometimes not.
