You're correct, I've been busy at work, but a Stanwyck fan's gotta prioritize.

-
*That is that whatever movie she was in, no matter how bad it was, and how poorly written her dialogue, she always spoke her lines with absolute conviction. You never doubted her belief in her role and her resolution to communicate that belief to the audience.*
I agree here. When I watch her playing different roles, I am fully drawn into each character. I don't think about Stanwyck as herself, as an actress playing a part, I am going along with the lives she is portraying onscreen.

"You wanted to go to the ballgame but I wanted to go to the ballet! Why do we always do what you want to do? And you're always leaving your clothes all over the bedroom floor. And you eat like a pig. And another thing, blahblahblah...."

:^0 I nearly get motion sickness trying to watch the "handheld camera" effect.
When I watch a movie a second time, after I'm already familiar with the plot, I love to look closely at backdrops and props, what people are wearing, etc. It's much easier to do this with older movies, when you can more or less "relax" more when you watch.

You know you're an OLD film geek when:
You can't get through the day without checking this message board at least once, if not posting on it, because "no one else understands you".
You look at a news page of some current red carpet event and have no idea who the people are. Plus, everyone seems to look alike and blend together.
You can't stand the herky-jerky motions of modern filmmaking and think that more can be said in a five minute still shot of yesteryear than the slam-bang explosions of today's films.

I agree with you, SansFin - If a movie is great, and the actor is great, the viewer is pulled in and he/she is swept up in the character, not the actor portraying the character.
For some people, analyzing the actor's personality or private life can take the fun out of watching the performance on screen. I would rather watch Robin Hood for what it is than say, "There's the guy who ran into trouble with those underage girls." Then a movie isn't really a form of "escape".
On another note, I'm sure there were many an actor/actress who loved to play roles as a way to escape themselves.

Really nice song, misswonderly.

Reading the last three posts, with references to piano solos and Thanksgiving and "achingly beautiful music", it made me think of George Winston -
"Thanksgiving":
I have a few songs from this album on my iPod. It was hard for me to choose just one to post...

Mozart and *Eine Kleine Nachtmusik*. Historical trivia: it was a favorite piece of diarist Anne Frank:

(I don't listen to a great deal of classical music, but I like it and I especially like Vivaldi. I do love Renaissance music and madrigals - these get my heart soaring.)

Thanks so much for that backstory! I get sentimental when I hear this song so it's interesting to listen to it from another perspective. I always like hearing backstories to songs I really love.
Tiny Dancer is also a great song!
Here's some poppier Elton, "Crocodile Rock":

Interesting, db, I've never heard this song before (I like it). Admittedly, I had a hard time watching the video. Yes, arresting visuals!

*but I did buy a Venus Fly Trap from the back of a comic book*
Your post reminded me that in my day I used to see ads for Sea Monkeys on the backs of comic books. I didn't order them - I wanted to, but was told that they didn't look pink and humanoid like in the cartoon drawings.

(and... welcome, MerryPickford!)

When I was a kid, "Bennie and the Jets" was one of my ultimate favorite songs. Now, when Elton sings the falsetto part I can't stand it. He also did "Philadelphia Freedom" - another awesome song.

*Well, OK. 100/week payable to me.........(I'm treasurer).*
Okay. My people will be in contact with your people.

*LOL! We're members of the We Dont Like You! We Dont Like You! Club*
Can I join? I'll even pay dues!

Hey, you're right, the two do look alike!
Thanks for introducing Elton John - I love his music. This thread was going down the slippery slope with Thomas Dolby and Nena :0
At random, I'm choosing, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", though Rocket Man is one of my big favorites. (My computer speakers still aren't working, so I'm hoping this is the studio version of the song. Gotta fix my system):

My state has mail-in ballots so I took care of mine.

Agreed! Plus with "Luftballons", there were two versions on the radio - English and German (they couldn't leave well enough alone with one language...).
But here's the video anyway, for the listening pleasure of the public ]

Science! Which reminds me of, "She Blinded Me With Science", by Thomas Dolby.
(for the record, I haaaaaate this song...):

I still have a five-cassette set of the Burns and Allen Show. I used to listen to them a lot during trips to India for a nice change of pace.
I know of websites that sell OTRs on CD now. Fun to listen to. -
*Young looks as if he's been around the block, under the block, and over the block a few times.*
I remember a time my brother and I were watching him perform on some tv program and my brother commented sarcastically, "Yeah, he's burnt!" (it was funny at the time but not a very nice thing to say, especially coming from such a loser as my brother...)
Here's a Young song that takes me back to my youth, "Heart of Gold" (my speakers suddenly aren't working right now so I hope this is the right studio version):

That's one of my all-time favorite videos. I remember first watching it when I was in a weakened flu state with fever and the video scared me! :^0
Happy Hallowe'en, one and all.

I've seen #1-4, 6 and 8. Liked #1 and 8 the best. Would never see in a million years: #9.

Love it! Interesting idea. But along with a thin body, you'd also have ulcers and gray hair. I'd prefer to get in shape the old-fashioned way.
I can't watch horror movies much stronger or more realistic than classic Dracula or Godzilla... (though I'd make exceptions for some films, like *The Shining*).

Is TCM getting too commercial?
