I think Paul Newman (another actor who was active in politics & various causes) said it best regarding the role of celebrity in politics: Speaking of himself, he said "If I carry more weight than my credentials allow, then I apologize. But you can't consider yourself a disenfranchised citizen just because you're in the acting profession."

> {quote:title=finance wrote:}{quote}Baldwin and other celebrities certainly have the right to voice their political opinions. However, because of their celebrity status and the forum they have which was given to them for other reasons, their political opinions are heard by more people, and will probably influence more people, than yours or mine. And that just doesn't seem fair.
Why isn't it fair, finance? People should think for themselves. Anybody dumb enough to be led down the primrose path deserves what they get. Kinda like people who allow themselves to get conned with various scams.

Sorry to hear that, MovieGal. In my case, I'm not happy with their service but I do know why it's so bad. You know how three or four months before your subscription runs out, they put a cover on it telling you your subscription is running out? Well, my last issue before my subscription ran out was September. I waited & renewed in August (not in June which is when they first told me about it with the aforementioned cover). When I called them asking why I hadn't received my October issue, they said I renewed too late--even though I actually renewed SIX WEEKS before October 1. That's not enough time to update their database & send me the next issue? Gimme a break. They're punishing me for not renewing months & months before my subscription actually ran out.

Yep. Why make a good movie when people will flock to see a bad one?

> To me freedom of speech means there are NO negative ramifications for one's actions (speech in this case). In employment one does NOT enjoy freedom of speech and I believe this is correct. (i.e. the network should have a legal right to fire someone for speech or conduct they deem isn't correct).
James, I agree that we really don't have freedom of speech. The more negative & public your speech, the more negative the consequences you'll receive. Maybe that's a good thing, I don't know. You could make a legal argument that it's not a good thing unless it could be proved that a negative or racist comment adversely & specifically affects one's job performance. But of course, in this politically correct era, most companies are going to err on the side of punishing anything that can even be construed as being offesnsive in an attempt to assure the uninterrupted flow of their profits. I think Jack Nicholson in Easy Rider pretty much articulated why we don't really have free speech: "It's hard to be free when you're bought & sold in the marketplace."

You're right, Dargo. Freedom of speech is everybody's right, even celebrities. And if you don't agree with them or feel they are misinformed, then feel free to disregard anything they have to say. Problem solved. And if that solution doesn't work for you, then the truth is what you really want to do is control people's thoughts.

Is that the criteria for what's offensive? "I don't agree with somebody therefore they offend me." If that's the crieteria, then stay off these messageboards cause you offend me (otherwise you're a hypocrite).

4. Clifford Odets wrote the screenplay.

I'd invite only one mogul: Louis B. Mayer but he'd have to come naked.

Yeah, & look around & you'll see young girls STILL with Veronica Lake peek-a-boo haircuts TO THIS DAY!! So she's still influencing fashion even if the people who are influenced by her wouldn't know who she was if you put a gun to their head.

That's the 5th time I've heard that.

1. It was based on a short story by Ernest Lehman.

Good quesion, Fill. Here are my favorites of the last 10 or 15 years:
Rachel Getting Married
The Departed
25th Hour
Bringing out the Dead
Fight Club
Social Network
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Family Man
You Can Count On Me
I'll add more as I think of them. These are all destined to be thought of as classics 50 years from now. Mark my words.

Cornelle Wilde was in GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH with Charlton Heston
Charlton Heston was in THE BIG COUNTRY with Burl Ives
Burl Ives was in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF with Paul Newman
Next: Timothy Bottoms

Haven't gotten mine yet either. I talked to a service representative yesterday & they said it's not considered late until the 25th. What a crock. That basically means they're not gonna go out of their way to assure I get it. If I get it, fine. If not, tough because if I haven't gotten my issue by the 25th they won't send me a new one anyway.

Merle Oberon was in WUTHERING HEIGHTS with David Niven
David Niven was in THE PINK PANTHER with Robert Wagner
Robert Wagner was in WINNING with Paul Newman
Next: Gene Lockhart

No. Take away the special effects & it's just a mediocre love story ridden with melodramtic cliches. And I sooooo saw the ending coming.

Well, then, it's aptly titled, isn't it?

I think she's very appealing, Tiki. For me personally, she kinda has a Carole Lombard thing going: she's a beautiful woman but she seems very down-to-earth & seems like she could be one of the boys.

Why are you so fickle?
Pick a movie & go with it, dude!!!

I'd only invite one person: Marilyn Monroe but she'd have to come naked.

Most of the Wall Street Protestors do not want a hand-out. They are not wannabe hippies trying to relive the 60's. They are not against capitalism. They just want a level playing field. They want corporations to pay their fair share of taxes. They want their middle class jobs to stop being sent oversseas to sweatshops. They want their air to be clean enough to breathe, their food clean enough to eat, their water clean enough to drink without it being polluted. They want regulation that ALLOWS for the free market instead of corporations eliminating competition by creating monopolies. They want a standard of living that that their parents & grandparents enjoyed. That's what they want. If you think otherwise then the cold, hard, sad truth is you are brainwashed by the corporate media machine who has a vested self-interest in controlling how the protestors are perceived.
