    🎬  STAR OF THE MONTH — Michael Redgrave (20 March 1908 – 21 March 1985)

🎬  TCM SPOTLIGHT: THE PLAY’S THE THING — Film Adaptations of Plays
This week marks both the birth and death of William Shakespeare (23 April 1564 – 23 April 1616). I envision a month of films spotlighting a different playwright each week. Imagine the possibilities.

🎬  SILENT SUNDAY NIGHTS – continuation of Challenge 1 (see below)

🎬  TCM IMPORTS – continuation of Challenge 1 (see below)

    🎬  TCM UNDERGROUND
What do a tire and a Coke bottle have in common? A wild ride? Yep.

    🎬  THE ESSENTIALS
Greed (1924) is Erich von Stroheim’s masterpiece psychological thriller based on Frank Norris’ book, McTeague (1899). I used to teach the book to college sophomores and screened the film during finals week. There was always a full house. (see Challenge 3 below)

    🎬  NOIR ALLEY
Scandal Sheet (1952) kicks off a block of films featuring sleazy publications and yellow journalism. Oh, and by the way, Happy Birthday, William Randolph Hearst (29 April 1863 – 14 August 1951).

🎬  CHALLENGE NO. 1: THE FOUR SEASONS, SPRING — SPRINGTIME
The first challenge, movies with Springtime in their titles, begins on Monday evening in primetime and runs straight through SILENT SUNDAY NIGHTS and TCM IMPORTS, combining the three. As a little bonus, I included Ladies of Spring: April, May & June, highlighting films featuring April Kent, May Wynn, and June Vincent.

🎬  CHALLENGE 2: THE FOUR SEASONS, FALL — Autumn
This group of films with Autumn in their titles includes an excellent documentary about historic Route 66. You might have seen other films that trace the grand American highway, but you’ve never seen it from this perspective. Highly recommended.

🎬  CHALLENGE 3: THE FOUR SEASONS, PROFESSIONS — Dentists
Open wide! These dentists range from silly to sadistic. This group of films leads right through THE ESSENTIALS with perhaps the worst dentist of all time.

🎬  CHALLENGE 4: THE FOUR SEASONS, NEPOTISM — Irving Thalberg and Norma Shearer
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer producer Irving Thalberg and actress Norma Shearer were married in 1927 and remained so until his death in the fall of 1936. All the films in this group starring Shearer, The First Lady of the Screen, were produced by Thalberg, The Boy Wonder.

    🎬  CHALLENGE 5: GUEST PROGRAMMER — Rhubarb
Join guest programmer, Rhubarb, as he showcases films in which ginger cats play major roles. And yes, he includes the film Rhubarb (1951) in which he stars because that’s exactly the type of thing a cat would do.

🎬  Birthday Tributes and National Days
    Carol Burnett           (26 April 1933 – )
    Sandy Dennis            (27 April 1937 – 2 March 1992)
    Carolyn Jones           (28 April 1930 – 3 August 1983)
    Shirley MacLaine    (24 April 1934 – )
    Ann-Margret             (28 April 1941 – )
    Al Pacino                      (25 April 1940 – )
    Charles Richter        (26 April 1900 – 30 September 1985)
    Shirley Temple          (23 April 1928 – 10 February 2014)

National Telephone Day and National Lingerie Day
Yep, it’s true. These national days of celebration actually fall on the same day. Is it any wonder then that all of the ladies in this group of films can work that telephone? From Judy Holliday doing a little modeling on the side at the Bonjour Tristesse Brassiere Company, to Elizabeth Taylor rocking a slip like no one else can, these gals have this day squarely in hand.

    Richter Scale Day
Is it coincidence that on the first and last days of the filming of Earthquake (1974), the set was actually rocked by quakes?

    Babe Ruth Day
    Celebrating the Sultan of Swat

    Is Anybody Out There?
Seems like the end of life as we know it has been on folks’ minds lately…..

    Arbor Day
Secretary of the Nebraska Territory, J. Sterling Morton, was responsible for Arbor Day, which began in 1872. Records from the first celebration in April of that year estimate that over one million trees were planted in the territory.

  8. I know of three USA-made films, but then I also came up with others for films made abroad. Are there others from Dalton that I don't remember or know of?

    Made in USA                                                                                                                                       Made elsewhere

The Lion in Winter (1968) -- as Philip II, set in 1183                                                     Cromwell (1970, UK) -- as Prince Rupert, set in the 1640s

Agatha (1979) -- as Archie Christie, set in 1926                                                            Wuthering Heights (1970, Italy) -- as Heathcliff, set in the early 19th century

American Outlaws (2001) -- as Allan Pinkerton, set in 1865                                   Mary, Queen of Scots (1971, Portugal) -- as Lord Darnley, set in the 16th century

The King's **** (1990, France) -- as King Amadeo, set in the 17th century

  9. Good job, Peebs! Pretty amazing story, no? I recently mentioned that I am not in favor of a woman as the new 007 after Craig, as has been proposed by some. Can you imagine if the very first Bond had been a woman? With no offense intended to Hayward, I don't think casting her as Bond would have spawned a franchise.

Thanks a lot, Peebs. It's your thread.
