  1. Just about every Viet Nam vet I know dislikes *The Green berets* because they say it's SO unlike what was really going on over there that it disgusted them. They claim it was more propaganda than representation. But enough about that. I think this thread was a good idea, too. In fact, TCM, next Memorial Day, might consider showing movies made by the individuals mentioned in this thread, of course, stating before the viewing of the actor's service and their dying giving that service. Makes more sense to me instead of showing movies filled with fake fighting on fake battlegrounds with actors fake dying on the backlots of major movie studios. Show instead, movies made by real actors who really died on real battlefields in service to our country! So WHAT if the movie isn't a "war picture"? Sepiatone
  2. Somewhere in between the BoTB snoozefest and the narcoleptic *Midway* was *Tora! Tora! Tora!* , in my opinion the most accurate and compelling Pearl Harbor re-inactment movie ever made. It both gave the audience well paced "war movie" action AND a history lesson without bogging down as did the other two. It was too late for "Bulge", but the template was already in place for *Midway* , which failed to follow "Tora's" example. Sepiatone
  3. You're thinking of one of the CONSADINES, Lavender. John or Tim. I could never keep 'em straight. *Update:* Just did some fast research. It was TIM in "Spin and Marty", and it's CONSIDINE, not CONSADINE. Sepiatone Edited by: Sepiatone on May 26, 2013 1:19 PM
  4. Y'know, clore, I should have KNOWN that was Lana Turner. For some reason, I didn't recognize her. I must have seen it on St. Alzheimer's day... Sepiatone
  5. It must have been HELL digging into C. Aubrey's bucket of popcorn! Sepiatone
  6. Seems to me it was for comic effect. Sepiatone
  7. Dang! I was gonna MENTION *Das Boot* . But I forgot...Thank you, Jake. Sepiatone
  8. The print of the sparsely watched "*Saftey Last* " I saw was fantastic! It's good to finally see silents with such visual clarity. Looked brand new, if you ask me. As for the music, well, unless it's REALLY annoying, I hardly pay it any mind. Which means I didn't really notice it, and therefore must not have been THAT bad to me. IF there's a Kings/Wings series( there's NO certainty in sports), and IF it's more physical than this 'Hawks/Wings series, all the players will wind up DEAD! Sepiatone
  9. Good choices, Liam. But we can't forget *Run Silent, Run Deep* . I wouldalso add *20,000 Leagues Under The Sea* . Along with "RED OCTOBER", I'd add *Crimson Tide* and *U-571* . No horse laugh from me on *Land That Time Forgot* . A silly effort, to be sure. But lots of fun escapism. Sepiatone
  10. You've just met Mark, Gerry. He too, is somewhat of a '60's dude. At least lingo-wise, he seems stuck in the early '60's. But we just love him here. It's nice to "meet" new members and viewers to TCM and the boards. Keeps some of us grounded. Like it will be quite a while until you too, start grumbling about TCM showing the same movies over and over. It reminds us that not ALL TCM viewers are "old hands" that have been watching for several years, and what's an old "warhorse" of a movie to US, is fresh and a new discovery for YOU. Welcome to the boards! Sepiatone Edited by: Sepiatone on May 25, 2013 12:54 PM
  11. Regardless of whether either of you two decide on a gender, the fact remains even if "twerp" has nothing to do with height, it still seems to describe Prince! Funny thing is, I kinda liked Prince's music BEFORE he became famous! (pre-"1999") Sepiatone
  12. According to my Funk&Wagnalls, Eugenics is described as "A science that deals with the improvement(as by control of human mating)the hereditary qualities of a race or breed". Sounds like the archaic practice utilized by wealthy families to insure all of their heirs come from "good stock"; like the idea a son or daughter MUST marry the "right sort of person". Or furthering the notion that all "races" be kept seperate. I didn't see the film or hear the song, so I don't know in which context the word was used. Sepiatone
  13. Caught a bit of *Safety Last* between periods last night. Like many others, I used to believe Lloyd really WAS up that high while dangling from that clock. But that he wasn't doesn't diminish the fact that his physical abilities displayed were remarkable considering the situation with his hand. I STILL get confused as to which hand it was, he does such an amazing job disguising it! Yeah, James, the Wings are up 3-1 on Chicago! And so many 'Hawks fans thought it'd be a sweep. Take comfort that it seems the Ducks gave us a harder time than Chicago seems to be doing. And the fact that WE have DATSYUK doesn't hurt. Sepiatone
  14. I always kind of liked Steve. I remember some years ago, TCM showed a short between movies that had an unfamiliar(to me, at least) actress singing a song while several well dressed men danced around her. The only two men I recognized were RICHARD ANDERSON and STEVE FORREST. The last thing I remember seeing him in was *Amazon Women On The Moon* in a '50's sci-fi parody. He always did a good job. I still don't see the resemblance to brother Dana. I'm actually surprised they WERE brothers. But I also noticed PETER GRAVES didn't start to resemble brother JAMES ARNESS until he was much older. RIP, Steve. You've done yourself proud. Sepiatone
  15. I've reconsidered this thread and concluded it probably had more to do with it being 4:30 am than anything else. If I can catch it again at a more decent hour, I'll give it another chance. Sepiatone
  16. I like Lloyd movies. Too bad the RED WINGS are playing game four of their play-off run tonight. Means I'll miss a good portion of Lloyd! I got "turned on" to Lloyd from a mid-'70's profile about him on ABC. Since then, I've always been fascinated with his abilities. Some people I know dismissed him when they found out he really WASN'T dangling 15 or so stories high from that clock, but you gotta admit, the physical dexterity shown in that scene is STILL impressive. Especially being done with only two fingers on one hand! Sounds like one hell of a night! Sepiatone
  17. Yeah, Gemini, I like that Bar Harbor place, too! Sepiatone
  18. Anyone here wake up early enough, or stay up late enough to watch this debacle? I could only take a half hour of this treacle. It was supposed to have James Caan and Robert duvall in the cast, but at the point I had enough, they've yet to show up. I found it hard to accept as a Coppola movie. Did it ever pick up? It seemed as pointless and directionless as Shirley Knight's character in the movie. The saddest part was that in the late '60's-early '70's, movie houses were chock full of this kind of crap! Sepiatone
  19. ADAM'S RIB. I was going to add GWCTD, but their scenes together in that one are too sparse for me. So I'll add PAT AND MIKE Sepiatone
  20. Because of her love for the jazz style known as "Be-Bop", jazz vocalist par excellence BETTY CARTER was given the nickname "BETTY BE-BOP" by Lionel Hampton. NObody "scatted" better than Betty! Sepiatone
  21. To me, MissW, both HOBBS and THSM are similar movies in the respect they seem to deal with the topic of raising children who are "coming of age" in the fast changing social climate of the 1960's. Neither of these films could have been made in any previous decade. Raising kids has always been difficult to some extent, but in earlier generations, the kids would have grown up into a social world not too disimilar from their parent's. By the 1960's, the social world kids were growing up into was totally unfamiliar to their parents, that parents had NO idea what to prepare their children FOR, and THAT'S what many of these comedies used as a foundation. You don't like HOBBS, and that's OK. At least with me. I DON'T like *Bringing Up Baby* despite my liking all the members in it's cast. But a LOT of people think it's at the top of "best comedies" lists. I for one, will NOT try to persuade you to like HOBBS, and will have NO ill will towards you for NOT liking it. I understand and accept it. Sepiatone
  22. Wow, clore! To think I have trouble remembering what was on TV LAST WEEK! Sepiatone
  23. This is all interesting reading since I too, have always asked this question, filmlover. Sepiatone
  24. Fly, while I'll agree to WAYNE'S greatness to an extent, it largely suffered from typecasting to a degree. None of Wayne's movies were COMEDIES, per se, but had comic moments that Wayne was able to pull off. But in small doses. Could anyone have accepted John Wayne as the befuddled and frustrated father in *Take Her, She's Mine* ? Would die hard Duke fans have liked to see him in *Vertigo* ? Could YOU see him as ELWOOD P. DOWD? As great as Wayne was at what he did, we never got to see him display as much RANGE as Stewart showed, and many feel he couldn't have pulled it off. Maybe in real life, Wayne actually DID read "War and Peace", as Stewart's Hobbs was doing in "Vacation". I suppose we'll never know. But the movie going PUBLIC would have found it hard to swallow. Sepiatone Oh, and thank you for the correction on McGiver.
  25. I wouldn't mind having the Blanding's finally finished house. Or the house towards the end of *North By northwest* located somewhere in OZ. Sepiatone
