Deanna Durbin film day Tribute, dont miss it
Sepiatone replied to Flutie22's topic in General Discussions
I've never been a Durbin fan, and don't really care for her movies. But I DO agree with Flutie22 that she deserves a tribute on TCM. MY not liking her has nothing to do with anything. There are 400 or so other channels I could switch to if I don't wish to watch. Her name is synonamous (sp?) with the "golden" age of movie making, and she DID have a huge following in her day. I think that makes her qualify. Sepiatone -
I'M on this board, and I wouldn't have guessed it. But then, I wouldn't have CARED, either! Sepiatone

Hell, I thought it was a dark sequel to *The Parent Trap* . That silly "twin separation" had to have SOME ill effect! Sepiatone

Oh, that face, that fabulous face II - Post 1950's. Whose is it?
Sepiatone replied to Kid Dabb's topic in General Discussions
Slayton, tell us who he is. Apparently, not THAT fabulous a face! Sepiatone -
Dothery likes it because of Walter Pidgeon. I like it because of Ann Francis. To each their own. NOW I'm going to have to read "The Tempest" to find the comparison. That should be fun. That the instruments aboard the spacecraft didn't look like left over dashboards from old automobiles, like in a lot of OTHER '50's sci-fi movies is a plus. But I always feel bad for Walt. He was living an idyllic life until the evil EARTHMEN came along. And I never noticed...when they left before the planet self-destructed...did they take ROBBIE with them? Sepiatone

Thanks for the info, Lavender. Fortunately, I have both on tape/disc, so I'll be covered regardless. I always watch a VICTOR MATURE movie on Mother's Day in tribute to MY Mother, the ultimate V.M. fan! Sepiatone

Since not ALL of us have a detailed schedule, are you mentioning movies that WERE on, or COMING on? It would be helpful if you supplied this kind of info once in a while. But *Kiss Of Death* is a long time favorite of mine, as well as PELHAM. Their recent remakes aren't up to the same par. Sepiatone

At the GM plant I worked, I was privy to a conversation at a break table between: a man with heavy African-American diction, another from deep in Alabama, the third from central Mexico, and the fourth from Lebanon. To this day, I STILL have no idea what they were talking about! The funniest thing about it was that THEY couldn't understand a word *I* was saying!! Sepiatone -
Someone once mentioned, in ANOTHER "TCM repeats the same old movies" complaint thread that even if they show a movie that hard-core TCM viewers have seen tons of times, there are still many out there who have NEVER seen them. Plus some of those oft repeated movies are someone else's favorites, and they don't mind. Since the one TCM staffer in the article said they're not concerned with ratings, they obviously don't mind if the rest of us switch the channel or put in a tape/disc of something else during that slot. So go ahead. I was glad to read that they DO pay attention to these message boards( if it's true), and NOT exclusively to those who attend the festivals or cruises, as those are venues of limited feedback. I suspect that THOSE attendees are like the tip of an iceberg; the smallest amount is what you see. I like TCM, but NOT to the point I'll go into hock or ignore my bills to be able to attend such events as festivals or cruises. And if I ever DO discover that those are the ONLY squeeky wheels being greased, then TCM can kiss my whip! Sepiatone Edited by: Sepiatone on May 14, 2013 11:34 AM

If you've ever seen that program *What Not To Wear* (and if your wife is like MINE, you probably have!), you'd be surprised at how much can be bought with only $5,000! Sepiatone -
That's the first time I saw it, Top. Never heard of it before and was pleasantly surprised. Yeah, I wound up rooting for Joe, both to get away with the money, then to get away with his attempt to resolve his problem. Hell, I would have done ANYTHING to make Teresa Wright happy! Sepiatone

"Mr. Smith" played by Lee Tracy in 1932 !
Sepiatone replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
Y'know, Finance, you hit upon an idea! In that *Front Page* version you mention, Lee Tracy WOULD have been good as Hildy, and O'Brien would have been better as Burns than Menjou. Of course, I think the CHIMPAZEE who played CHEETAH would have been better than MENJOU in anything! Sepiatone -
Stella Dallas (1925) screening tonight in Minnesota!

Uh-oh...I see another silly thread coming. And I mean that in a GOOD way... Would Nathan Detroit ever sing "New York, New York" in Kansas City? Does "Memphis Slim" got a gal in Kalamazoo? Sepiatone -

I apologize now for derailing this thread for some levity... A young man of good means and from "old money" approaches his mother with a problem. "I want to get married, but I don't know which of the three women I would wish to marry would be a good choice." His Mother offers a suggestion. "Give each of them a certain amount of money, say, $10,000, and see what they do with it. THAT should help answer your questions." So the young man did just that. The first woman took the money and went on a shopping spree. Hit every high-end store and completely replaced her already lavish wardrobe. The second woman took the money to a travel agent, and made plans for a romantic get-away cruise vacation for just the two of them. The third woman took the money and divided it between several wisely chosen investments to help grow the money into an amount that would help them be financially comfortable for years to come. The young man went back to his Mother and reported the results. "I see." said Mom. Then smiling indulgently, she asked, "So then which of them are you going to marry?" The son quickly replied, "The one with the BIG ****!" Sepiatone -
I've mentioned before how my Grandmother had me watch this as a kid. It was special to her, having grown up in outskirt Pittsburgh in the coal mining town of Hermanie, PA. She always liked the way the lifestyle of the much earlier Welsh coalminers parralleled the way the 19-teens/early 1920's Pennsilvania miners were living, and her explanations of what was going on as far as the mining sequences in the film go made it more interesting to me. At first I thought this thread was about all the girls my MOM tried to fix me up with! Sepiatone -
That's cool, James. My wife got treated to a Mother's Day breakfast this morning by one of her nephews. In my wife's family, "taking care of the sister's kids" wasn't economics. It was out of DESIRE. Sepiatone

Addy, you and I see eye to eye( no poem intended) on F. Scott's "Great American Novel". To those of you who've never read it.....read it sitting at a table. At least then, your head HITTING said table will wake you up! He actually managed to bore me more than HEMMINGWAY, and that takes some doing. Gimmie STEINBECK, PUZO, GOLDMAN, TWAIN, EVANS, KESEY and WOUK anytime! Sepiatone

Didn't they convert that thing into the "Popemobile"? Sepiatone

I have to agree that although I kinda LIKE this movie, it IS silly. Especially MICHAEL LANDON as an albino. It could be it's all that silliness that makes me like it. It DOES rate higher to me than the STEISAND/KRISTOFFERSON version of *A Star Is Born* or NEIL DIAMOND'S pathetic *Jazz Singer* however, so there's that. But I still say ACRE was stilted by the still too heavy handed moral codes of the times. Otherwise, it could have been made a lot better. Sepiatone

LOL! Appreciate the blunt honesty. Care to tell us WHY? Sepiatone

The upshot is, this wasn't intended to be a *Blackboard Jungle* thread. Sepiatone

Phillipino culture and Latino culture have a lot in common. My wife is Latino( Mexican), and it was no problem when she "took over" a couple of her sister's kids. Of course, the kids were more or less "raised" by their parents, but my wife spent so much time carting them around and having them stay over that she STILL refers to a couple of nephews as her "sons". And the sisters never seemed to mind. In fact, in our family, the words "Aunt" and "Uncle" are only formalities. EVERYONE has a hand in getting these kids through life. I suppose Blythe's reaction and behavior in this movie was pretty much spot on for the times, as adoption was harder and more infrequent than today, no "surrogate" parents, in-vitro conception, **** banks, family extentions, illegitamate births and the like. Many kids today have NO idea who their real Fathers or Mothers are, that it seems to be no big deal anymore. And no social stigma attached, either. You couldn't make this movie these days and have it be as emotionally impacted as it probably was in 1949. Oh, and didn't Natale Wood look a bit like Billy Mumy's sister? Sepiatone PS: It WASN'T a "do-it-yourself" TV kit. In those days, someone actually came to your house to "install" a television set. PPS: From what I understand, FARLEY GRANGER would have probably appreciated the praise about his "good looks" from the GUYS in this forum, rather than the ladies!

I don't know if this new version of GATSBY uses modern music or not. I know they use it in the TV TRAILER, but quite often you'll hear music in the trailers that's never heard in the movie. And although I like DeCaprio as an actor, I have trouble taking him serious in certain roles, mostly because it seems his voice never changed during puberty. It's not easy for me to accept adult level dialouge from someone who STILL sounds like they're 14 years old. All I can otherwise contribute is that the Associated Press reviewer's critique in my local paper was titled, "All Glitter, No Soul". Sepiatone
