Filmgoddess wrote: "Oh Lord. It's a movie. Fiction for Heaven's sake" TWO religious referrences in one reply! ISN'T it the gist of the movie anyway? And yet nobody makes a big deal about the religious undercurrent in *The Day The Earth Stood Still* . Interesting... Sepiatone

I agree that Andy Hardy is dated. And I agree they're corny movies. I further agree that Andy Hardy doesn't say Christmas cheer to me. But I still LIKE them. BECAUSE they're dated. BECAUSE they're corny. If my chin's on my chest, they lift it up enough to make me CHUCKLE and lighten my mood. It also doesn't hurt that I have a brother-in-law that resembles the young Mickey Rooney. So there's THAT giggle! Hell, you're talking about TCM! ALL those "pre-codes", noirs, screwball comedies and post-war dramas are dated! Yes, even STANWYCK'S. ESPECIALLY Stanwyck's. OK, so they're WELL WRITTEN and ACTED and DIRECTED dated movies, but nonetheless. Isn't that why we watch them? Andy Hardy movies were the '30's-'40's version of today's "family feel good" movies. Going to the theater to see an Andy Hardy flick was the equivalent of going to go see "TIMOTHY GREEN" today. Those Hardy films also might have bored the crap out of many movie goers back THEN as well. My Mother grew up in those times, and once said of Andy Hardy, "To quote Spencer Tracy in that one movie, in MY school we'd eat punks like HIM for breakfast!". Why, we each try to explain to our detractors, who fail to understand what we see in watching all these "dusty old movies", that to sit down and view them within the context of when they were made, THEY might enjoy them, too. So, GEE WHIZ! Lay OFF Andy Hardy, willya? Sepiatone

I saw BOTH those movies, ham. The newer Disney CGI flick isn't all that bad, as it follows the 1951 version a bit closer than any others. And I liked the gimmick where Cratchet, voiced by GARY OLDMAN is animated to RESEMBLE Oldman, as is COLIN FIRTH as Scrooge's nephew Fred. As I can't stand Jim Carrey in the first place, I was surprised how much I liked this one. That other one, with Carrie Fisher, is another "Lifemark", or is it Halltime", movie hunk of cowpie. The WORST was the version where VANESSA WILLIAMS plays a character who, instead of named "Ebenezer" is named "Ebony"! OY! Sepiatone

Klugman could do tough AND tender with equal quality and sincerity. Outstanding no matter the part. Always liked him. R.I.P Jack. Sepiatone

If you ever saw *The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas* , Mr Durning showed he was amazingly light on his feet for a man of his size. He managed dance moves that would be hard for even the most "in shape" dancers. Also loved him as FR. HUBLEY in *Everybody Loves Raymond* . One of the best all around character actors in the business. He WILL be missed. Sepiatone

Yeah, I'll vote for "Blondie". Sepiatone

I was always fond of the car driven by the Kirby's in *Topper* . Don't like Corvettes, TCMfan? Well, all I can say is that I started disliking them from 1968 on. I'll take a '63 "split window" any day! the '55 Mercedes "Gull Wing" ANY 1960's Jaguar XK-E An honest to goodness Tucker The '68 Dodge Charger Or MY first "real" car, the '65 Dodge Coronet 500! (damned thing had an azz-kicking 383 four barrel!) Early '60's Morgans A 1972 Olds 442 There's too much DROOL on my keyboard. I'll have to stop! Sepiatone

No problem, Marlowe. Sorry, but I'm not THAT Sepiatone. I'm known as "Whitefang" on other forum sites, but while registering here, was informed by the site that "Whitefang" was already in use. But I've yet to see a post by that OTHER Whitefang! What the HELL? Anyway, welcome to this forum. Hope to hear a lot from you. Sepiatone(the remake)

That's been brought up here many times. It apparently has something to do with not obtaining the rights. Sepiatone

Are we talking about the LAUREL & HARDY classic, or the horrifying ANNETTE FUNICELLO/TOMMY SANDS spray cheese version? Sepiatone

Even The Superstars Were In Some Stinkers
Sepiatone replied to lydecker's topic in General Discussions
One might be able to underrate Monroe, but NObody can underrate that movie! And although the Neil Diamond version of *The Jazz Singer* is most definitely a stinker, I enjoyed Olivier's performance. ("It's not TOUGH ENOUGH...being a JEW?") Sepiatone -
MY favorite part in *The Bishop's Wife* is the one where the big letters appear onscreen and spell out THE END. Sepiatone

Back in the '70's, while watching "ONE LIFE TO LIVE" with the ex, I thought, "This Tommy Lee Jones guy deserves better than this!". Thought the same about Morgan Freeman while watching "THE ELECTRIC COMPANY" with the kids. I was happy to see the right people thought so, too. I personally don't know ANYBODY who doesn't like Morgan Freeman! Sepiatone

What if Shirley Temple had not retired?
Sepiatone replied to LiamCasey's topic in General Discussions
If Shirley Temple had not retired, we wouldn't have had Laraine Newman's hilarious send up of Ms. Black as ambassador to Ghana on SNL. Sepiatone -
I don't know about anyone else, but whenever I hear John Lennon's Christmas song, I have to fight the urge to sing Peter, Paul and Mary's "Stewball" along with it. Sepiatone

Don't forget "THERE"S A BATHROOM ON THE RIGHT"! I used to have a BOOK that listed them all. Gotta go FIND it! Sepiatone

My guess is the whole experience with the brothers was so unpleasant that they refused to be a part of the documentary in an effort to keep it behind them. Incidentally, I STILL have a poster-sized copy of "STONED AGIN!" hanging on a wall in my house! One funny part of the film(out of several) was when several other cartoonists claimed Crumb, by the way he depicted African Americans in his cartoons, was a RACIST. And then Crumb declaring that the only people who called him racist because of them were WHITE LIBERALS. Several black guys I knew then who SAW those cartoons knew where Crumb was coming from and thought them funny. Sepiatone

Off the top of my head, after NO MORE VAMPIRES and NO MORE DOOMSDAY CRAP is the wish for AMERICAN characters in movies and television shows to be played by AMERICAN actors, instead of British and Australian actors. Sepiatone

Well I hope your knee gets better VP. My brother in law had that surgery earier this year. As of now, you wouldn't know he was ever ailing. So you've THAT to look forward to. And I thought "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding" was ELVIS COSTELLO. Maybe HIS was a cover? VP, you also reminded me of one of my favorite "FAR SIDE" cartoons: A fence surrounding several lifeless looking BLOBS with feathers and beaks prodtruding from them and a sign on the fence declaring it the "BONELESS CHICKEN RANCH"! TCM UNDERGROUND showed this documentary last night(or this morning?). Robert Crumb was an artist/cartoonist who was iconic in the late '60's. I myself, once boasted a mighty stack of "ZAP COMIX". A unique individual who seemed to have come from a troubling childhood environment and stoicly lives within his personal principles, his style of art/cartooning was the influence for many who came after, including GARY LARSON of "THE FAR SIDE" fame. His two brothers were shown to have had an equal talent for art and cartooning, but lacked the self discipline to go anywhere with it. At the time this doc. was made(1995), Crumb was shown to be highly critical of then modern popular culture. Voicing the same dismay with it that I, too, voiced at the time. But HE moved to France to get away from it all. An irratic person with an odd sense of integrity, Crumb had plenty of opportunities to really cash in with his talent, and turned down many lucrative offers feeling they jeopardized that integrity. Surely, a level of integrity that is sorely missing this day and age. Sepiatone

NBC Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Classic Holiday Favorite
Sepiatone replied to hlywdkjk's topic in General Discussions
I always thought it was kind of silly. But still, a better animated version than Disney's that had McScrooge as the main character. However, they finally made up for it with the newer recent animated version in which Jim Carrey, never one of my favorites, provides the voices for Ebenezer and other characters. With several other time stretching embelishments, it follows the ALISTAIR SIMS version pretty closely. Another clever trick it employs is to have Bob Cratchet, voiced by Gary Oldman, animated to RESEMBLE Oldman, and Scrooge's Nephew Fred, voiced by Colin Firth, animated to RESEMBLE Firth. Although it relies too much on the "flying around" effect, it passes muster. Sepiatone -

PANIC IN YEAR ZERO! I didn't know Milland directed this until watching the closing credits. I have a fondness for this movie, despite how campy it now all seems. Went to see it with my parents when it came out. I remember my Mom commenting that it never occured to HER to wear one of her BEST DRESSES when we took off on OUR camping trips! And HEY! Did any of you notice those little CON-L-RAD icons on the car radio I mentioned in another thread recently? TOLD ya! What I found disturbing about this movie was that, as I earlier stated, I went to see this with my parents when it came out, and THAT was FIFTY YEARS AGO!! Now, if you'll all excuse me, I have to attend to the CRICK in my back! Sepiatone
