My wife loves watching those Hallmark movie channel Christmas movies. So I often get stuck struggling through them. One piece o' crap flick they had was about a girl and a guy who agree to be each other's "dates" during the holiday season so their families would get off their backs about their love lives. The guy was Catholic and the girl was Jewish. At one point, the girl's parents, thinking the guy was also Jewish, wanted to meet his parents. So, the guy tells HIS parents he's converting for HER.

In the only amusing segment in the movie, when the girl's parents show up at the guy's parents home, they had gone overboard with the decorations. A blinking star of David on top of the Christmas tree, and because the girl's brother couldn't find enough Mennorahs, had instead KWANZAA candle holders all over the house! "What? They look practically the SAME!" Outside of that, the rest of the movie was a bust.

I CANNOT abide DORIS DAY being on this list! From either the neck UP or DOWN, Doris was ADORABLE!

    Someone mentioned ED BEGLEY, and while I won't dispute his being listed, I would also like to point out something that's more connected with the discussion on another thread that's going on about Jane Fonda's resemblance to her Dad;

I'm of the opinion that ED BEGLEY JR. must have been ADOPTED! Either that, or his MOTHER was strikingly TALL. NO resemblance there...

Sepiatone PS: willbe, CLARK GABLE once said, on the topic of homely girls, words to the effect that "Homley girls are easier to get dates with. And GRATEFUL ;) "!

Jeez, you've all mentioned anything I could come up with. Occaisionally, some old timer would find new life on soap operas, as did Philip Carey.

But NOT as guests, but as cast members, there was AGNES MOOREHEAD (Bewitched) and TOM EWELL(Barretta). Oh, and LLOYD NOLAN in "Julia", I think it was called. PLEASE correct me if wrong!

I also seem to recall CYD CHARRISE(sic) make a guest appearance on Chad Everret's "Medical Center".

ESTELLE PARSONS showing up as "Roseanne's" Mother, and SHELLY WINTERS appearing occaisionally as her Grandmother.

"Kung Fu" had David Carradine's father JOHN show up, as well as EDDIE ARNOLD, GARY MERRILL and JACK ELAM.

Lori, as a long time lover of the book, I found Muni's *The Last Angry Man* a huge disappointment. Although I don't blame Muni. I can't be sure if it was his idea, or the director's to have him play Sam Ableman WAY too laid back.

But Muni was considered in his day to be an "actor's actor", much like Vincent D'Onofrio is today. So deft was he at his craft, it seems concievable he could have pulled off doing a better Elizabeth than Bette Davis.

I've long been an admirer and fan.

I can't say anything about "Redskins" as a sports team name. On the surface, it DOES have a distracting connotation. But why would the use of the word "Braves" be offensive to Native Americans? Would they rather be thought of as cowards?

But the use of the word "Indians" in the case of the Cleveland team should either be dropped, or the mascot image be changed. Like John Turturro said in *Quiz Show* , "They're called 'indians' because the white guy got lost!"

That's right, Dothery. In spite of the sexism from both directions here, what WE percieve to be attrative or not doesn't play in real life. I suppose, without sliding off track in another direction, that while many of the actors mentioned here seem like they'd be "sexless" in relation to movie standards, there's the fact that off screen, their lives may have been pretty active in that regard.

It was to my astonishment that those who knew him claimed that DON KNOTTS was quite the womanizer. After all, it could be assumed that a few of the "sexless" people mentioned were married with several children, so SOMEbody found them a turn-on. And thankfully so. One of the most attractive women I ever saw was JACK PALANCE'S daughter, and HER father was as far from a "matinee idol" as one could get!

I earlier mentioned MARY ASTOR on MY "sexless" list, but I've often read that her private life was very much active in the sack. WHILE she was married!

In the words of CHUCK BERRY, the TRUE "King of Rock and Roll", "It goes to show you never can tell"!

I'm surprised, Dargo, that Trump didn't try cashing in on the sale of "Trump Bad Hair Hats", ala Davy Crockett "Coonskin" caps!

Dougie, you and your brother had to hold the "rabbit ears"? What happened, the TIN FOIL didn't work?

I always wondered why some smart-azz didn't try an "un-colorizing" campaign; the REMOVING of color from old Technicolor movies? "Man, wouldn't this movie look GREAT in BLACK AND WHITE?" ( I actually thought of this while watching *The Sting* recently)

  8. A little back on track here, there have been several times in the course of my life that gave way to hysteria over the end of the world. The earliest of course, was the WWIII anxieties, which saw civilization end under a forest of mushroom clouds. Followed by rampant erosion and poisoning of all life on Earth by polluted air and water. Then came the downfall of freedom by invading hoardes of communist troops. Not to be left out, bible thumpers trumpeted the "end times" at various increments claiming that, in order, the "anti Christ" was Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Of course, we only had to worry about W because the Y2K threat of global disintergration turned out to be a bust.

Since a huge surge of interest in Nostradamus in the mid 1970's, all "experts" on the man claimed that his quatrains indicated that all would end in 1999. Since THAT didn't come to fruition, we of late had to hear about the "lost books" of Nostradamus. Some people just can't give up. NOW we're seeing doofuses gear up with survival training, stockpiling weapons and food in anticipation of the Mayan calendar prediction of all coming to an end in 11 days!

That these goofballs would put their faith in the same people who used human sacrifice to appease the gods in hopes it would bring good fortune to intelligently predict the end of the world amuses me no end. Well, if THAT prediction fails to pan out, I sit here anxiously waiting to see what NEW apocalyptic frenzy hits the airwaves.

So long as we're straight on that, Valentine. I've never let Jane's resemblance to Papa distract me from her "hotness".

Speaking of Father/Daughter resemblances, while watching a DVD of "WEEDS", I've noticed Jennifer Jason Leigh's getting to look a lot like Daddy Vic Morrow, and NOT in a good way!

Yes, I do, Top. And I wouldn't be aware of any books about long gone movie stars being available from any other source. And most of the stores in my area don't sell DVDs of the movies offered by TCM. Or if they do, I'd have to dig through countless discs of BATMAN, HANGOVER or TWIGHLIGHT discs to ferret them out.

I don't have time for that. I'm too busy writing useless CRAP on internet message boards!

  11. Don't know what YOU'RE looking at, Valentine. But Jane Fonda retains many of her father's facial features...shape of face, eyes, expression, Especially as she got older. Just as MY oldest daughter resembles me more than she does her mother. Just as several of my nieces resemble THEIR fathers.

Now, from the neck DOWN, all bets are off! We "straight" males are all too glad that in that respect, Jane likely takes after MOM. ;)

As a man, I'm hard put to decipher the sexual attraction some women either find, or DON'T find in certain actors. So, I asked my wife.

Her opinion of old time actors that weren't physically(by either body or face) attractive are:

    JAMES CAGNEY

    RALPH BELLAMY

    BOB HOPE

    BING CROSBY

    MONTGOMERY CLIFT

    ROBERT MONTGOMERY

    ROBERT YOUNG

    JOSEPH COTTON

    FREDERIC MARCH

    SPENCER TRACEY

    GEORGE SANDERS(Saunders?)

    DAVID NIVEN

    LAURENCE OLIVIER

    GEORGE RAFT

WARREN WILLIAM (Just KIDDING, willbe! She said she used to have a crush on him. At least until she laid eyes on GILBERT ROLAND)

As for the ladies? In MY opinion, you can add to the list with Kate Hepburn:

    JUNE ALLYSON

    BETTE DAVIS

    MARY ASTOR

BARBARA STANWYCK( YES! I SAID it!)

My money, BFSR, was on both her marrying Ted Turner AND the "tomahawk chop". That gesture seemed a mindless insult to Native American heritage(like the American activity called 'Chinese fire drill'), a cause close to the liberal heart. It's not a matter of "political correctness" as much as "social correctness". It would be akin to using a racial slur. And the ceasing of using racial slurs was generally a liberal issue. One of the few "liberal" issues that's hard to argue against.

And marrying Ted Turner? Another money-grubbing, "boosh-whah' running dog lackey of the capitalist pigs? TRULY appalling to a "true" liberal! ;)

  14. I've given a little thought to the original idea here.

I don't know for sure why Dall wasn't a bigger "star" than he became. My one guess would be he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

How many members of this forum have posted their opinions of how so many movies were miscast? Obviously, studio heads didn't really think in terms of making great movies. THEIR first and foremost consideration was "box office draw". That ANY movie from this era became "great" was more likely an accident. Maybe somebody else would have been better as Rhett Butler than Clark Gable. I can't imagine WHO, since Gable in the role has long been widely accepted, cosidered somewhat iconic, and now hard to dispute. But MY bettin' money is on that he was such a big box office draw, no OTHER actor was given serious consideration.

Let's look at another direction. In those "golden days" of studio/factory output, actors in the studio's "stable" weren't neccessarily given the freedom to pick and choose roles. Oh, some with large "draw" might have earned the right, but that all depended on the terms of their contracts. A case in point might be Joan Crawford.

Crawford WAS a big star by the mid '30's. So big, I'm willing to bet the studio chiefs directed her to do the many wonky projects that despite her popularity with the public, STILL managed to flop. As always, "word-of-mouth" is more potent than any high priced promotion. Maybe Crawford, unable to be given the choice, HAD to do those pictures, many of which wouldn't have been made otherwise, on order from Louis B. Mayer. Probably the thinking was, "This movie shouldn't be made. But with a star like Joanie, we can make it for peanuts and clean up!". Possibly Joan, out of loyalty or otherwise ordered to do so, was ultimately blamed for the movie being a flop, and then considered by the people who made her DO those turkeys as "box office poison".

Unfair to be sure. Dall might have been better for more parts than the bigger name who got the job. Just he wasn't a big enough NAME. Meanwhile, just to pay the rent, likely wound up in a few "dogs" and eventually, and unfairly dismissed.

I've long felt that after the way he treated both Crawford AND judy Garland, Louis B. Mayer deserved his own little corner in HELL.

My wife DID see *Stella Dallas* , Dargo. She's just not a Stanwyck fan. That's OK. I'm not that big on her either. But I DO possess more tolerance than my wife.

Let's all try to remember that when Fonda made certain movies, her politics were different, and possibly non existant. She's publicly apologized for the whole Viet Nam thing, and has moved on. I, for one, found it hard to reconcile the same woman who once was considered a "bleeding heart" to be the same person seen doing the ridiculous "tomahawk chop" at a Braves game along side then hubby Ted Turner. A "true" liberal would have been appalled.

But I agree; if you DO look closely, you see more of her Father's features in her face( particularily the EYES) than not. All brother PETER got from Dad is some talent, and the lankiness.

Oh, one other thing...I wondered how Stanwyck felt, while doing the one scene in WILD SIDE with Jane. I wondered if she thought, "Damn, kid! I did movies with your FATHER. BEFORE you were born!"?
