I see that it was released on DVD in both March 2002 & July 2003. I'll have to check out my library to see if it's there or available from an interlibrary loan. Thanks!I hope you get a chance to see it, Stephan55. I saw it on a movie channel (can't remember which one) but it wasn't on TCM.
THE LAST SEDUCTION is great neo-noir. I think it was on HBO originally.

Rayban, it would be really cool if Timothy won but Gary played a Real Person which tends to win Oscars plus there are going to be voters who feel he's "due" because he's been around for a while. I'm not knocking him; I remember him fondly in SID & NANCY. Plus he's won all the other major awards. Old fogey voters (yes, they are still around) may feel it's too soon for Timothy or Daniel Kaluuya and "it's an honor just to be nominated."

My pick is of more recent vintage: The Whole Wide World from 1996 with Vincent D'Onofrio as writer Robert E. Howard and Renee Zellweger as his friend. Vincent gives an excellent performance as Howard, the imaginative writer who created pulp fantasy fiction but had limited exposure to the real world - much due to a needy mother.

It seems like in recent years if an actor wants to win an Oscar in a Leading Role, portray a real historical person.

In the original Dawn of the Dead, the two surviving humans leave the shopping center in a helicopter. We never know what happens next and are left to speculate. Will the fuel hold out 'til they find safety? Will her baby born OK?

Spence, I agree with most of your Oscar picks. I think Allison Janney will win in Supporting; she's picked up other awards for her role in I, TONYA. I think GET OUT will win Original Screenplay; this is probably the best chance for the movie to pick up an Oscar. It's a popular hit and great movie - this could be its Oscar recognition.

I watched SAFE IN HELL again which I have commented on in some of the General Discussion threads. It's expertly directed by "Wild Bill" Wellman and pulls no punches. Dorothy Mackaill is terrific in it. I like that Nina Mae McKinney and Clarence Muse are in it, too, and they are not playing "shuckin' and jivin'" stereotypical supporting roles. Dorothy plays Gilda, a woman who escapes to a Caribbean island evading possible murder charges in the States. She's surrounded by a bunch of seedy male predators, one of whom is particularly evil.

There is an interesting "behind the scenes" clip on Huffington Post (in the "Latest News" section on right side of top page) about "Boys in the Band" coming to Broadway this spring. Directed by Ryan Murphy and actors include cutie Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons. Tuc Watkins is in it, too, whom I remember from soaps but can't remember which soap he was on. No laws protecting gays when "Boys" premiered 50 years ago but it's a timely revival especially considering the current political climate that threatens to dismantle a lot of rights (in my opinion).

Film Registry movies tomorrow night and ALL THE KING'S MEN is one of the best. I've always liked it a lot and have seen it several times. Broderick and Mercedes are great. Production code be darned, we know what's going on with those two. (Shades of A FACE IN THE CROWD: smart savvy woman takes country bumpkin under her wing and look out!)
I might have to record FOOTLIGHT PARADE because it's one of my favorite musicals and has some great numbers. Jimmy Cagney gets to dance and "Shanghai Lil" is already starting to play in my head (again).
TROUBLE IN PARADISE is sublime. Great cast, great set design, script and direction. A real delight. Precode, too.

Robert Mitchum is very cool and his appeal is contemporary in that he'll always be popular and his acting style won't go out of favor. The more I've seen him the more I like and appreciate him.

I love the hard-hitting "Wild Bill" Wellman precodes like WILD BOYS OF THE ROAD, PUBLIC ENEMY and the total awesomeness of SAFE IN HELL. Dorothy Mackaill is just terrific in it. Nice support from Nina Mae McKinney and Clarence Muse, too, in non-stereotypical roles (she runs the hotel and he does everything else at the hotel with dignity). I knew I had seen Cecil Cunningham somewhere else so I looked it up - she's in THE AWFUL TRUTH.

LawrenceA, I also go way back to the beginning with my fondness for Cronenberg and his "body" horror. So original and visceral. Love it. THEY CAME FROM WITHIN is one of my favorite horrors. TCM needs to run it. They've run RABID, SCANNERS and THE BROOD so I would love it if they'd run it plus the uncut DEAD RINGERS and CRASH.
Sepiatone, I liked THE DEAD ZONE and thought it was one of the better King adaptations. Christopher Walken was excellent. The only thing I didn't like was Martin Sheen's southern accent. If I remember correctly, the story takes place in Maine or somewhere in New England, for heaven's sake (I know he's running for President so he could be from anywhere, but still it bugs me).

CaveGirl, I'm another fan of the Cronenberg CRASH and DEAD RINGERS. When Irons won the Oscar for REVERSAL OF FORTUNE, he thanked Cronenberg for casting him in DEAD RINGERS. CRASH is pretty out-there with people getting "kicks" from car accidents. I found it to be original and provocative. DEAD RINGERS is loosely based on a true story as you probably know.

Sorry to learn about Tiffany. She was becoming more natural in her delivery and showed improvement since she first started. I wonder why TCM didn't renew her contract. It was just Saturdays during the day so it wasn't like she was on all that often. Her statement is gracious.
