I love him, too. As much as I love his dancing. my favorite Cagney performance will forever be WHITE HEAT.

Welcome! -
I'm catching up on some more recent horror. I saw Get Out on HBO last night (again rewatched some parts of it tonight to see a few "clues" I missed on first viewing) and enjoyed the blend of humor, political satire and horror very much. Well acted; I especially liked the subtlety of facial expression changes among the "Stepford-like" Black characters.

Article: Inside Cary Grant's Secret Life With Men.

I guess Cary Grant's "secret" life isn't so secret nowadays. He had plenty of wives and male "friendships" and took LSD to better understand himself. He was so handsome it's easy to see his attraction to both sexes (Randolph Scott isn't too hard on the eyes, either, and it seems like most of the photos I see of the two of them together they're always both bare chested). I wish he hadn't been so tight with money but I imagine growing up poor that was the way he was. -

Bette wasn't overly concerned about her looks in many movies - she was an actress, willing to look however the role required. If you want to see glamour Bette, watch FASHIONS OF 1934 if TCM ever shows it (now called just FASHIONS) with William Powell. Her hair is very blonde and she's wearing plenty of eye makeup. I think she was pretty but not beautiful in the conventional Hollywood way. I thought she looked great and had wonderful hair and clothes in ALL ABOUT EVE. -
I watched The Autopsy of Jane Doe on Showtime2 last night and really liked it. It had a lot of tension, scares and good performances by the two leads. This is one of the best horror films of recent vintage and thanks for the recommendation. If it wasn't for this thread, I probably would have missed it.

TCM and Other Sources for Classic Film

OK, not the same but designed by the same guy. I do recall the two robots having similar designs. Thanks for the info. -

Wasn't Robby the robot in the LOST IN SPACE tv show? -
Frank Morgan was a fine actor who also shared the screen with Sullavan and Stewart in THE MORTAL STORM (an excellent film about the rise of the Nazis and the effect this has on regular people).

I really like WILD BOYS OF THE ROAD. Frankie Darro was a great juvenile actor and I've seen him in a number of movies from that era. There are some really harrowing scenes in the movie, too. It seems very real that parents in the depths of the depression would have a really tough time taking care of their kids so it's easy to understand the eldest kids heading out on their own.

THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER is the best version for all the reasons noted. Lubitsch is a magical director - is there anybody like him today? The whole cast is terrific. Great chemistry between Stewart and Sullavan.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM
ChristineHoard replied to Bogie56's topic in General Discussions
Thank you for mentioning Odds Against Tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. This morning I watched The Shadow in the Sky which had a good performance by Ralph Meeker as a WW2 vet dealing with PTSD (used to be called shell shock). Jean Hagen, James Whitmore and Nancy Davis were the supporting cast. -
I think you both are doing a great job. Your thorough research is appreciated.

Thanks for the comments. From what I remember soaps do a pretty poor job with their gay characters. There's really no reason they can't do better; we know there is gay talent in front of and behind the camera. Most of the audience is women and gay men. Concerned about declining ratings? Write for your audience. Trust your audience; straight people have gay family members, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, etc. and should be able to deal with different characters. Create character-driven interesting stories. When I watched BOLD & BEAUTIFUL I was amazed there were no gay characters on this show which takes place in the LA fashion world. Then they had a gay couple (one half was the above-mentioned Crystal Chappel) but they were hardly ever on after their introduction. I sort of remember the Hank Elliott character from ATWT. Cute photo above! Again, hats off to Doug Marland. Before I started watching Y&R, I read that the writers were considering having the Katherine Chancellor character have a lesbian affair but backed out because they were afraid of viewer reaction. Of course this was years ago but now I think what if Katherine had been bisexual? It would have added a whole new interesting layer to her relationship with Jill. She would have been mad at Jill for stealing her husband but also mad at the husband for his interest in Jill beyond the usual reasons. It might also explain her relationship with the hapless Esther and vice versa.

From the reviews I've read we do need a reason to see it.

Excellent film for all the reasons given. I was actually up early enough to watch in real time. I hadn't seen it before and really enjoyed it. Cinematography, the performances and music were exceptional.
-
What American soap has done the best job portraying gay relationships/romances?
-
I missed ATWT during most, but not all, of the Doug Marland days. From what I've read he was an exceptional writer - one of the best and soaps were lucky to have him. Eileen Fulton is one of the great soap divas. Thanks for the tribute; well done. I'm looking forward to Kim "The S L U T of Springfield" Zimmer column.

I'd watch that in a heartbeat. How do you think he would do in a Tom Ripley movie?
-
Love your post, TopBilled. I appreciate your comments about Irene Dunne. She certainly was a chameleon.

Great minds sometimes think alike. I like Olivia, too, but I don't know where I would rate her but I will say that Olivia in THE HEIRESS is one of the truly great performances of all time, in my opinion. Re I REMEMBER MAMA. I didn't know if I would like it as I've kinda gotten out of that sort of sentimental movie as I've gotten older but when I finally saw it, I really liked it and that was largely due to Irene. Irene in THE AWFUL TRUTH and THEODORA GOES WILD - she is so perfect and has such wonderful chemistry with her male co-stars. Time for TCM to show THEODORA again.
-
Irene is my third favorite actress (after Barbara and Bette). She's great in any genre. Loved her in SHOWBOAT (minus the cringeworthy blackface number), I REMEMBER MAMA, THEODORA GOES WILD and everything with Cary Grant.
-
That Danny Walters is one great looking guy! If he can act half as well as he looks - that's a plus. Looks like the Brits do a better job with soaps than we do.
-
I've never followed DAYS other than what I've seen in the soap press so I'm confused about a character who not only comes back from the dead (happens all the time on soaps) but whose sexuality is totally different. Really? Maybe the character enrolled in Mike Pence's "Pray the Gay Away" school when he was in the in-between zone of life and death. LOL. Get it together, writers. Bad writing (and some bad acting by newbies given too much storyline because they're young and pretty) is what turned me off soaps. The recycled plots, the endless triangles, etc. Come up with something new!

I remember most of these names from my soap-watching days and reading SOAP OPERA DIGEST and SOAP OPERA WEEKLY. I'm very much looking forward to this.
