Jlewis, Thanks again. Love Bill Holden and he looks great here! I should have remembered - Sunset Blvd. is my favorite movie. I guess it's time to watch it again.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

Yes, starting with KING RAT. -
Yes; I recall the Calvin Klein ads. I remember from an earlier time, way before the soap "hunks" were removing any suggestion of body hair, photos of William Holden. In one (I don't recall from what movie or if it was just a "beefcake" shot) he has some chest hair and in PICNIC he has no hair.

Yes, that's it! Thanks! The ones I saw were pretty good. TopBilled, I'm surprised you didn't know this. LOL.

A discrete discussion on "adult" films and their social impact
ChristineHoard replied to Jlewis's topic in LGBT
JLewis: You are to be congratulated for presenting an awesome history of porn film making. I remember when a lot of these films came out in the 1970's and porn went through its "respectable" phase and the movies played at regular theaters where couples would attend instead of just the old grindhouse scene. When my husband was still alive, he liked porn so we watched some of the films you mentioned. I always thought Georgina Spelvin (The Devil in Miss Jones) was one of the better actresses because she seemed to enjoy what she was doing instead of just going through the motions. -
Tom Selleck was also been in a mini-series about a small town cop a few years ago and he was good in that role. Does anybody remember the name? I think it was based on a novel(s).

What a fun topic! I like chest hair on the men. I'll be glad when the hairless chest fad passes. Last time I saw soap men with no shirts, all their chests looked virtually the same - no variation except for skin color. Boring!

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

Here's a movie coming on that hasn't been on TV in years that I can recall: Blume in Love. It's the last of the Marsha Mason movies and comes on around 4AM. If you liked Bob, Carol, Ted & Alice check out Blume. It was made by the same guy (Paul Mazursky), came out around the same time and has a really good performance by George Segal. It's one of those 1970's sex comedies. -
Back when I started watching TCM in the early 1990's they used to show westerns every Saturday during the late morning/early afternoon. This was reminiscent of when I was a kid and western TV show reruns used to play Saturday afternoons.

TCM and Other Sources for Classic Film
ChristineHoard replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
There are several reasons I don't care for Pat Boone, the first being is his appropriation of black music. Other reasons are mostly political and don't really belong in the "General Discussions" thread. -
I wouldn't go with anything too long. I would show some comedies and something with a lot of great cinematography, especially in the late silent period.

TCM and Other Sources for Classic Film

I just can't with Pat Boone. -
Why don't they expand the intros/wrap-ups a little bit and then include talk about the lesser-known actors? There's usually enough time between movies to do this; they just might have to cut a few "Word of Mouth" segments that run about a minute or two (and which I've already seen about a dozen times).

Welcome, todd4148. As I said on another but similar topic, THE GREEN BERETS is the worst Vietnam movie. Yes, show something else in the later hours.
-
Yes, Veterans Day and only one Vietnam flick and it's the worst one. No Korean War flicks. Today I am wearing my old POW/MIA THINK ABOUT IT t-shirt in honor of the day.

Thanks for the photos and shout-outs to Johnny Guitar, one of my favorite westerns, too. I love everything about it: the rich color cinematography, the tension between Mercedes and Joan, Joan with Sterling, the whole storyline. Great cast! Nick Ray sure made some interesting and original movies.
-
Yeah, his character assaulted the Sharon character whom he had been dating and the Nick Newman character fought him. TopBilled probably remembers this.
-
I think I had the same print you did, yancey. It was in the 80's and it was a very dark print but the film was so rare then and the cast is great. I got mine at a fantasy convention.

Yes, but if I remember correctly, Cibrian played a rapist/bad guy on Y&R.

I was trying to copy Lawrence A's quote about Richard Schickel and it wouldn't work but I always get a chuckle when one of the movie "experts" gets a fact wrong and it's often a fact that can be easily checked out like the Oscar thing with MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, which was unique in Academy history because three men from the same film were nominated in the Best Actor category, although none of them won. Schickel didn't know this?!? I've known it for 40 years! As a youngster, I was so eager to see some women's names on TV "behind the camera" screen credits that it was really cool to see names like Bonita Granville, Gail Patrick, Ida Lupino.

Kevin Spacey's career is over. There's no coming back from this one. No dinner theater, no indie movies, it's over. Even if all the stories aren't true, there are a lot of them and they can't all be made up. I liked Spacey as an actor, too, and enjoyed watching his movies very much but coming on to boys who are not at the age of consent is wrong. Deciding to come out now as if this has anything to do with pedophilia is wrong and just gives fuel to the fire for the bigots. It's really a sad situation.

I wish I could have seen Bankhead in THE LITTLE FOXES on stage so I could compare but I love THE LITTLE FOXES and watch it whenever it comes on TCM. All the performances are excellent including Bette. The truly heartbreaking performance for me, though, is Patricia Collinge. Stuck in a loveless marriage and her son, husband, Regina (Bette) treat her like she's nothing. I don't blame her for drinking. The storyline is timeless, too, as to the cheaper, nonunion labor in the South and groups pitted against each other when they should be allies as so ably articulated by the great Herbert Marshall. As for Kael's take on THE FOX, it's a 1967 perspective. I wonder what she thought about THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE which came out about the same time. THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES - what's not to like? Time to show it again, TCM!
-
Yes and it was 30 years ago. I also very much admire his screen work. He's an excellent actor.

Kevin Spacey has finally officially come out.

I'm looking forward to Strange Love of Martha Ivers which I've seen several times but I want to see Eddie's take on it. But, when you enter the TCM web site at the top where they have four monthly highlights, they show another noir film for October 29 at 10AM yet MARTHA IVERS is still on the schedule. Not sure what's going on there but I'm hoping for MARTHA.
