  1. I know a lot of people don't like movie critics or trust their opinions but when everyone says a movie stinks it generally does - like THE MUMMY 2017 version.
  2. I, too, was surprised when Karger and Mann said there was no Liz in a bathing suit scene. I had seen SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER before and I swore there was a beach scene with Liz in her white bathing suit so I watched the movie again and there it was. Odd that they would go on and on about it when they were so clearly wrong. They should have just said the promoters used Liz in her white swimsuit and left it at that.
  3. Don Cheadle was terrific in this movie. This came out around the same time, or shortly thereafter, Cheadle's lawyer role in the PICKET FENCES tv show - a totally different character. Terrific actor with great range.
  4. I just watched He Ran All the Way and was blown away by John Garfield's performance (not for the first time). He put everything into this film. The ending (SPOILER) with him at the car was terrific yet so sad because it was the last film scene in his life. Kudos to everybody responsible for making this movie. I enjoyed Eddie's interview with John Garfield's daughter. It seems to me that this was a little early in Shelley's career for her to be such a prima donna off camera (and if she can't remember having an affair with John Garfield, well, shame on her because no matter how many people I slept with, you can bet I'd remember having an affair with John Garfield.)
  5. Her wardrobe is fine and I like her new hairstyle. It's Saturday afternoon - why should she have to be all suited up on Saturdays?
  6. Next to watch on my list, misswonderly, I did record it for later viewing. I've seen at least part of it before some time ago. John Garfield was such a good actor. How he was treated because of the "red scare" near the end of his life is heartbreaking.
  7. I finally caught up with Phantom Lady and enjoyed it. I agree that the lady wasn't needed at all because there were witnesses to the fact that the protagonist was at the bar and in the taxi. In the real world this would have been enough to not arrest the guy, much less get a conviction but heh, it's a noir world so we just go with it. Nevertheless, I loved the "drummer scene" with the all its frenzy - how'd they get that past the censors? Great scene! My favorite sequence was Ella's silent stalking of the bartender. The camera work was masterly.
  8. Cruise is off being a manly man. In MAGNOLIA he talks machismo but in his action flicks he is machismo.
  9. How sad - monogamous straight Protestant white men can't catch a break in the movies or in real life. Tragic. (I am being sarcastic.)
  10. Recommended reading: The article on Cat People in Filmstruck (the Streamline section) and the comments following it.
  11. THE BIG PARADE STALAG 17 MEN IN WAR THE STEEL HELMET FULL METAL JACKET
  12. I'm guilty, misswonderly, of recording the Sunday AM Film Noirs for later viewing, including Phantom Lady and so I tried to skip your spoilers. I love film noir and wish to participate more in this thread so I need to catch up on my viewing. Many of them I've seen but I do enjoy Eddie's comments. I like his ads for the Sunday Noir on TCM, too; well done.
  13. Last night I watched The Connection which I had taped Saturday night (TCM). It was a tough watch about junkies waiting for their dealer. Very realistic film by Shirley Clarke. The music, led by sax player Freddie Redd, was terrific so this made the movie for me. Early film appearances by Roscoe Lee Browne and William Redfield (ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST). I'd give it three out of four stars with the music adding between a half star and a full star. Especially recommended for fans of jazz.
  14. slaytonf, Thanks so much for your response and help. I was able to get an avatar with help from Azure who provided pix and their corresponding URLs. Thanks to everyone for their efforts and I am most grateful. Apparently, when you find a pix you want to use, the URL has to be complete in that you have to type in http:// and then all the other numbers/letters (some of which are in caps) perfectly. For example, for the three John Gilbert pix Azure sent, the URL was: http://i.imgur.com/ followed by various letters & numbers. Whew!
  15. I just watched BECOMING CARY GRANT on Showtime. Interesting documentary - I would have liked more movie clips but they showed quite a few with mentions of working with various directors like Cukor, Hawks and Hitchcock. The film maker did go into his personal history about his youth, his parents and wives. When his mom "disappeared" when Grant was 11, it was because dad had her locked up in an insane asylum (back in those days, the word of one husband was enough to have a woman committed). Grant didn't know this for nearly 20 years. A lot of coverage about Grant and LSD therapy which seemed to have helped him a lot. Some hints at Grant's sexual "fluidity" but not one word about his friendship with Randolph Scott. If you're going to open that door, you might as well step over the threshold.
  16. Re' BROKEN ARROW and other Jeff Chandler films: I think everybody, regardless of sexuality, had more chemistry with Jeff Chandler than Debra Paget (sorry, Debra Paget fans). I never thought James Stewart might have been bisexual but rayban and TopBilled make interesting observations. Stewart was always good looking and had a manner about him appealing to everybody. As a young man in the 1930s he's not playing super macho types and maybe that's why he makes a (SPOILER) surprising villain in the second THIN MAN movie and in ROSE MARIE.
  17. Solid points, TopBilled, that's why they call it acting. I always thought the reason Stewart didn't marry until 40 was because he enjoyed being a bachelor with all the ladies - he certainly liked kissing Harlow in WIFE VS. SECRETARY enough to get retakes and had the hots for Margaret Sullivan. Of course, we weren't around in his younger years so we don't know for certain about any affairs and the notorious casting couch applied to men as well as women.
  18. Interesting comments re' ROPE. At first I thought the commentators were right. Stewart was conservative, politics-wise, so maybe he was kept out of the loop on purpose. But, you're right, he had been involved in theater so surely he would have been familiar with the play. Stewart must have been interested in working with Hitchcock and was looking for darker material post-WW2 (Anthony Mann westerns, other Hitchcock flicks, etc.). James Stewart wasn't an idiot. I agree, Rupert's homosexuality is toned down due to censorship at that time.
  19. Why is posting a picture as an avatar so difficult? I have followed instructions/suggestions from TopBilled, Sansfin and others and it just isn't happening for me. I'm not a computer genius but it seems like it should be easier. I tried the URL thing and it wouldn't recognize it. I downloaded into my computer a picture from a "free photo" website and it wouldn't come over even though I have the photo in My Documents and My Downloads in my Windows 10. I give up; I can't believe it's so complicated and I feel like an idiot. (John Gilbert is the photo I want.)
  20. LawrenceA, Your Frankenstein's monster pictures are awesome! Karloff is still and will always will be my favorite. The Warhol monster doesn't even look like a monster - he's too human looking. Gary Conway is pretty good. Charles Ogle is scary looking. Thanks for the compilation.
  21. TopBilled, If you're going for romance and skipping LOVE LETTERS, I suggest: DUEL IN THE SUN, MADAME BOVARY, LOVE IS A MANY-SPLENDORED THING and THE BARRETS OF WIMPOLE STREET.
  22. It's a fine movie and one of my favorites in the genre'. Unique set designs, Karloff and Lugosi together, Latin gibberish spoken at the Satanic mass, Karloff being skinned alive, Lugosi's irrational fear of black cats and young gay David Manners playing yet another romantic lead in a horror film. Perfect!
  23. I'm interested in listening to the comments from our guest host(s). They were great last week.
