Thank you, Dargo. Leaving politics out of it, Miller was a good host and I enjoyed watching him and would like to see him again. I think my favorite guest hosts lately are (in order) Eddie Muller, Dennis Miller and Dave Karger.
-
I liked Dennis Miller when he had his own show on HBO but then he became a real shill for Bush's war on Iraq. He was not suited at all for the football gig. So, as he became more politically conservative I didn't care for him. But, I thought he did a great job as the host of this month's monster movies and I wouldn't mind seeing him again. He was funny and he showed respect for the better films, citing mostly special effects people and directors.

Want to blow Mike Pence's mind? Have him attend the NYC Gay Pride Parade and then have a solo dinner with a woman who isn't Mrs. Pence. He'd probably melt like the witch in WIZARD OF OZ!

Right. Everyone, even movie stars, is entitled to some privacy. From what I understand about what Esther Williams said (and I didn't read the book) is that it wasn't such a big deal (at least to me) so I'm kind of "so what" - let him be. These "tell all" books by relatives always appear after the person being talked about is dead so readers get only a one-sided account. Unless they're committing some heinous crime or act, maybe just let it be. Esther should have remembered that at one time she supposedly loved Jeff. Show a little class. Show some respect. (As an aside, I'll admit I'm not the biggest Esther Williams fan. Yeah, she could swim, she was pretty but I find her range as an actress somewhat limited and Jeff Chandler could act rings around her.)

Great looking (great voice, too) guy; gone too soon. Loved the photos TopBilled selected. He would have been a wonderful Captain Kirk!

Such an interesting relationship. I'm glad they loved and supported each other even though LB "arranged" the marriage. I always thought it was terrible the way LB managed the private lives of the MGM talent. At least Jeanette was able to maintain her relationship with Nelson Eddy and Gene could have his men friends (on the sly, I suppose, due to the times). Why would it have been so terrible for Jeanette and Nelson to get married in the first place? Did LB think this would have ruined the make-believe of their movies? Did he want Gene to get married as a cover for his bisexuality? I guess he just didn't want Jeanette and Nelson together off-camera and he wanted a spouse for Gene so he put two and two together and thought, "hmmm."

Mamie also was in HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL with Russ Tamblyn in 1958. It's sort of a cult classic. Russ plays an undercover cop in a high school and Mamie plays his "aunt" or some such character. (I'm not aware of COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL)

Is this how rape was treated in the 50s & 60s?
ChristineHoard replied to Debra Johnson's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Well, that is the title of the book. And it's a better title. -

I remember Facets from my years in Chicago. I'm glad they're still around. They had a sterling reputation for offering a wide variety of flicks. -
When you're retired you can look as funky as you want.

Thanks for the clarification.

topbilled, Are you going to feature these before or after your break? What about your WW2 war flicks for women? Are you off the boards entirely or just this thread?
-
Re' Fran Ryan - really tough break to lose two husbands like that.

Plus she really grew as an actress. She wasn't very good real early on but got better and better over her brief career. Love RED DUST (which I noted in TopBilled's other thread). She and Gable share great chemistry. -
I think RED DUST is the jewel in tonight's lineup. Gable, Harlow and Mary Astor. It 's pre-code so we get that sexy vibe among the actors. Fun!
-
She's still alive according to the internet (IMDb) but there isn't much info about her. There's also a writer with the same name so check the internet carefully.

FYI: I read about it on the DAILY BEAST ("TV's most explicit hot gay sex scene ever" or words to that effect). Click on the entertainment section at the bottom of the main page and it will go to that as well as other entertainment stories. It's supposed to go further than LOOKING. There are also articles about the episode and series in EW and VULTURE.COM which I haven't read yet but I look at DAILY BEAST almost every day.

Diane Keaton receives AFI Life Achievement Award

Princess - you're right; I had totally forgotten about Fredi Washington! I was thinking about the Lana Turner version (although I think that actress was part Hispanic, but still... ). -

And remember, too, in Hollywood, mixed race or light skinned characters had to be played by whites, especially if there was a romance involved. So we have SHOWBOAT, PINKY, IMITATION OF LIFE, etc. I remember an old LAW & ORDER episode where a male character passed for white and had a good job in New York and his covertly racist wife found out. Meanwhile, their son was in a private, all white boys' school. What this has to do with Diane Keaton, I'm not sure, but it's an interesting topic. -
Totally agree; not even an honorary Oscar. By the way, the early/afternoon schedule today is loaded with pre-codes from director Alfred E. Green. For the evening, BLOOD SIMPLE is early Coen Brothers. I saw it when it was released in the theater years ago.

Irene Dunne is one of the most wonderful Moms in the movie world in I REMEMBER MAMA. She's one of my very favorite actresses (number three on my list).

I don't know if anyone watches AMERICAN GODS on Starz but I read on a couple entertainment web sites that last night's episode had the most explicit gay s e x scene ever on a TV show - it lasted four minutes and apparently showed a lot. The show is based on a book by Neil Gaiman and is a "what if" about the gods of mythology being real and here in America today. I might check out the show, not just for the s e x , but it's an interesting premise with a diverse cast including Ian McShane (DEADWOOD) and Orlando Jones (MAD TV).

Ken Curtis was also in THE SEARCHERS and, if I recall correctly, got to do a little strumming on the guitar and singing. I didn't know he was John Ford's son-in-law.

You are forgiven, sir! I just wanted to point out that although Dennis did a lot of TV work (love him in TOUCH OF EVIL, by the way) his performance in DUEL is special. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up about WILD RIVER. I've heard of the title but wasn't familiar with what it was about. I'm going to watch or record it as it sounds like a really good film.
