Do you remember when there was a "competition" between Judy Garland and Deanna Durbin? There was an MGM short subject with both of them singing. Of course, their song styles were different and Judy stayed at MGM and Deanna went to Universal.

I just watched HUMORESQUE (maybe I should put this in the "I Just Watched" topic). Joan is excellent as is John Garfield. I love Oscar Levant asking Joan if her husband interferes with her marriage - great line! Anyway, I really like Joan's look in this film - her clothes and hairstyle are perfect. She is beautiful. Those glasses look good on her, too. I don't know if it's her best performance (I will always be partial to MILDRED PIERCE) but she's really good. I am recording AUTUMN LEAVES for future viewing.

I can't believe they would get rid of the boards. It can't be that expensive to run. I think most of us would really miss it.

It's possible, jaragon. Does anyone think that CROSSFIRE would have followed the THE BRICK FOXHOLE (its source novel by Richard Brooks) and have the murdered character be gay, like in the novel, instead of Jewish?

Very good question. I would like to think Hollywood would have been more open and enlightened but the stigma against homosexuality in much of "the real world" may have prevented it. Would portrayals fall along the lines of African Americans in the movies? Stereotypes in the 30's and 40's, a little more diverse and empathetic after WW2 and in the 50's and 60's? For all the talk about how "liberal" Hollywood is, it's still a pretty conservative place when it comes to subject matter and not wanting to offend the moviegoing public, although every now and then there is a breakthrough of sorts especially in independent film.

Sorry to learn of this. I used to subscribe and was thinking of getting it again. I still like having print versions of things. Sigh...

i don't think Joan expected to win for POSSESSED, in fact, according to INSIDE OSCAR at least, she attended the ceremony (maybe even for the first time?) and given her various neurosis that lead her to not attend the year she won, i doubt she would've gone had she thought it might really happen.
I read somewhere that many thought Roz would win for MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA so it was sort of an upset that Loretta won for FARMER'S DAUGHTER.

Patty Duke played Kim's part as a little girl in a brief scene. She's having a snack and sharing milk with a kitty. Even Kim couldn't have pulled that off - if you think she looked too old to play 16, imagine if she had played that character any younger!

That's not entirely accurate. He stated that he didn't think it would be realistic for those times for a black man and a white man would be handcuffed to each other.
Actually, I think it is possible in those times for a black man and white man to be shackled together. It could be viewed as an added punishment for mouthing off or misbehaving.
True case in point: I know someone (white male) arrested for speeding in Mississippi circa 1970, threw up in the courthouse, and received 30 days for contempt of court for getting sick. He was put in the jail with the black inmates and this was a sort of "we'll teach him" added punishment. What the jailers did not expect was that this person got along just fine with this cellmates.
Of course, Sidney and Tony had to be handcuffed together in THE DEFIANT ONES or there's no movie.

Wasn't Olivia in the some bio pics where the characters weren't around in real life anymore to comment on accuracy? Of course Hollywood bio pics in the classic era didn't focus too much on any character flaws or truths.
I think Olivia was just trying to be diplomatic and I suppose at 100 years of age we could cut her some slack.

It would be interesting to see what movie magazine polls or whatever said back in the day about Joan Crawford's glamour/beauty and where she stood.

What a great episode. The scenes with Joan and Bette together are the best. Greatest actress - most beautiful - and it still wasn't enough for either one. I really felt Bette's pain when she recalled testing for Jack Warner, eavesdropping for his response to her talent, and being devastated when he says, "who would want to **** that" and she's only 22 years old. Heartbreaking! Sarandon nailed it.
Lange was excellent. I think she's gotten better as the show's gone on, but maybe that's me. I felt so sorry for Joan; she just wanted more respect, to be indulged a little more. Maybe if they had shot her longer scenes in HUSH HUSH and then just left them on the cutting room floor, things might have worked out better.
FYI: I read on the "Vulture" web site that BD and Jeremy are still married!

Christine--
Your mentioning that Ginger Rogers movie reminds me of another Ginger Rogers movie which takes place during the war.
It's a Bittersweet love story, "I'll Be Seeing You", featuring that beautiful song that was Liberace's theme song.
This movie is really a little off-beat with Ginger Falling in Love with a shell-shocked Soldier, Joseph Cotten, while she wrestles with her own personal tragedy.
Yes! I've seen it a couple of times. Very different sort of film for its time but I liked it.

This will be an excellent month on TCM. He had the best voice and was so good looking and talented. So many good movies and several I haven't ever seen or haven't seen in decades plus my late husband was named after him. Thanks for letting us know!

I think TENDER COMRADE would be a most interesting choice. You have the film story of different "Rosie the Riveters" while husbands/sons are at war and you have the behind-the-scenes where some of those involved would have to deal with the HUAC in a few years. Quite a contrast between propaganda fiction and real life drama.

Kim Stanley may not pass for 16 but I think she looks younger than 45. She was 33 when she made THE GODDESS, However, she acts 16 in those early scenes and I think this is one of the reasons why she was considered such a good actress. She doesn't really look like a goddess either but moves and acts like the character.

Good comment. Obviously the present-day subplot is meant to show us she found continued purpose in life after his death. But the film is less interesting when Ryan is not on screen with her.
TopBilled, Any film with Robert Ryan becomes less interesting when he's not on the screen.

I caught most of LATE SPRING last night and if TCM runs it again, I'm watching every second. What a beautiful film! It was a total discovery for me as I'm not all that familiar with Japanese cinema, especially films from the immediate post-war era. Thanks for your insights.

Ann Revere did play some great Moms. Gladys Cooper was a mean Mom (but great performance) in NOW, VOYAGER. Cody's Mom in WHITE HEAT was one tough Mom but she certainly loved her boy. Angela Lansbury in MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE - the Mom from
H E L L.
But for really great Moms and my favorite Moms I love Barbara in STELLA DALLAS and Irene Dunne in I REMEMBER MAMA.

A Joan-centric episode of FEUD this week. I loved the opening with the STRAIGHT JACKET promo. Interesting; I kind of felt sorry for all Joan went through. I loved the scene with Joan and Hedda and how it unfolded that Hedda might have something on Joan in spite of their friendship.(Hedda may have had heart trouble, but she didn't pass away until 1966). Robert Aldrich finally tells off Jack Warner! John Waters as William Castle! Overall, another good episode with fine performances all around.

As a little kid in primary school, I was just crazy about Maverick. It was so neat for me to be able to watch him on TV on Sundays and then go to the movie theater on Saturdays and see him in Technicolor stuff like "Up Periscope".
I always read the fan mags and I knew he was fighting with Jack Warner - -it seems like he had the same salary for both Maverick and the movies. I could be wrong, but that kind of sounds like Jack Warner.
We must be close to the same age. I was kid and loved Maverick, too, James Garner was my favorite and I called him the "kissing Maverick" for obvious reasons. What a man!

FYI: In the real world, Joan was born in 1906. Bette was born in 1908 & Olivia in 1916. Susan was born in 1946, Jessica in 1949 and Catherine in 1969.

I assume you are now talking about Somethings Gotta Give and not Town & Country?
Yes, I thought that was what you were talking about in your "never heard of it" statement.. I never saw TOWN & COUNTRY. I think it was only released for about five minutes because it was so awful.

Who or what is Charlotte?
HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE which starred Bette, Olivia, Joseph Cotten and Mary Astor. Joan was going to be in it, but something happened and Olivia got the role.

Totally agree about the hairstyles. Very flattering for both women.
As for FEUD reviews, speedracer5, you didn't say where you read these reviews. The show has gotten a positive vibe overall on this site plus I read the recaps on VULTURE and EW (especially VULTURE) and their comments are overall complimentary. I'm enjoying it, especially the performances by the leads, Alfred Molina and Judy Davis. It isn't perfect but it is entertaining and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in film history and/or fans of Bette and Joan. But I get time is precious and we all have priorities.
As for Bette and Joan, I've loved Bette seemingly forever. Favorites are EVE, NOW VOYAGER, THE LETTER and THE LITTLE FOXES. In recent years I, too, have grown in appreciation of Joan, especially her work in the 1940's - 1950's.
