Does religion get in the way of a star's career?
Lori3 replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
I agree with lavender completely. darkblue,I see your "level of sophistication" statement as not very nice and uncalled for, but that is just my feelings and my opinion. You of course can post what you like, and you have and it is obviously your opinion. I have explained more than once here and just recently, that my first post here was appropriate to the topic at hand. JG's first name was changed because it sounded too Jewish. The other post I admit got off topic but I did not start it. I did response to it though and I have apologized. Wayne made his response to me without reading my first post! I am not telling anyone to use his or her ignore function here. I am just making the suggestion. Like lavendarblue, I too say you win and I hear what you and Wayne are saying very clearly. Can we drop it now please? Lori -

Wayne, one more time, my first post here was in regards to Jack Warner telling Garfield we have to change your first name because it sounds too JEWISH and many people "think" they don't like Jews. That I believe that is appropriate to this thread and other people here have agreed with me. The Gentleman's Agreement discussion did get off topic and I have admitted that, and apologized. I hear you loud and clear though, so can we just let it go now, please? This isn't a very pleasant experience for me and as I wrote earlier, I soon will be much less activity on these message boards. Until then I think it might be in your best interest if you put me on your ignore list, don't you? *To get back on topic. I too never knew till just recently that Elizabeth Taylor was Jewish, and I never knew Lauren Bacall was Jewish. I guess "stars" don't have to advertise their religion, but it does seem like some, might have kind of "hide the fact" that they were Jewish. At least years ago it seemed that way, and that is too bad, in my opinion.* Lori -

darkblue. I am getting the message loud and clear, thank you. I already stated my posts with stop soon, I stay on topic when I mention John Garfield. I already stated also, the reasoning for me frequently bring up Mr.Garfield. I have started other threads not related to him, and made other posts not related to him, but as I mentioned earlier, I freely admit the majority of my posts are related to Mr. Garfield. I will make one more "thread" regarding Mr.Garfield when it gets closer to the date of the TCM tribute day to him. Then my posts will be cut down dramatically. I will only post or begin a thread when I feel it is absolutely needed, e.g. if his long over due (in my opinion and the opinions of those who signed my petition) box-set of his films become a reality. Again, as I mentioned people can always put me on their "ignore" list or just not read my posts. I want no sympathy whatsoever, please believe me, but I have to say, my "feelings" are hurt. I am sure the intention was not to do so, however I can't always help or stop the way I feel. I am sorry again, that this interesting thread got off topic. I would mention another example right now to get "back on track" but I can't think of one. I apologize. Lori -

Topbilled, you just wrote I was on topic here, and when I mention my favorite I stay on topic even with my agenda. And I was the one who brought up Kirk Cameron here. Thanks, Lori *Back on topic, not the greatest actor in my opinion but I think Stephen Baldwin is another actor who is really strong in his religious beliefs that may have affected his film career. Again by his choice I will admit, but a person has to stay true to their beliefs, if they are going to stay true to themselves. That is just my opinion of course.* -

Wayne. Yes I will mention John Garfield, on posts when appropriate to keep his name alive here (no one else does) AND until my petition for his box-set of films is sent off to the "powers that be" which means probably till the end of year. (I had written an earlier post here on this thread regarding how Jack Warner changed his first name because it sounded too Jewish, the Gentleman's Agreement post was a side-track,) I have discussed other actors, actresses and films in other posts. I did start a Gene Kelly thread not long ago.But you are correct the majority of my posts have to do with John Garfield. Since TCM tribute to him is scheduled for September 19th, you might what to "look away" from my thread. After this year ends, I probably will pull away from these discussion boards, unless I am banned from these message boards at a earlier date. I guess Wayne if you see my name associated with a post or thread you can put me on your ignore list. That, will not hurt my feelings. Sorry. I am sorry too this thread is "high-jacked" here a little, my fault. I will put it back on track. *I believe that actor Kirk Cameron strong Christian beliefs has affected his career. (By his choice I admit.) He has made a few movies but all that I can think of is the "Left Behind" series and a film on marriage. None have been a great financial success, although my husband and I did enjoy them.* Lori -
Another African American actor who died young was Canada Lee. He died at the age 45. I have read he died of a heart attack, but I also read he died of uremia. Lori Edited by: Lori3 on Sep 7, 2012 12:07 PM

ginnyfan, I agree with you regarding the print of The Affairs of Martha that TCM aired early this morning, at least for me on the west coast. I really don't understand why MGM would waste the talent of an actress like Ginny. That kind of thing has always caused me to think, "what the hell were they thinking?" I mean even with my favorite, who proved himself in his first film, they (WBs) put him in some really B pictures. Why waste a talent? Same thing with Miss Ginny. She proved what she could do, and they put her in stuff like this film today. Didn't these actors, and especially someone young like Ginny have someone at their studios to advocate for them, an agent or somebody? I kind of don't think so, because one always hears how Bogie, Cagney or Garfield were always placed on suspension because they refused to do a real "stinker" of a film. I guess in Ginny case she had no choice, but to take what the studio gave her and do the best she could. It doesn't seem fair though, especially in the case of a child actress like Ginny. Lori

Yes, ginnyfan that damn Grp A Streptococcus bacteria which attacks the heart in the majority of cases, causing a rheumatic heart, got some really talented people, e.g. Garfield, Darin, and Weidler. There are different strains of Grp A Strep, and one of the strains causes that "flesh eating" bacteria you have all heard of. Enough of the medical lesson, sorry. Regarding, the statement someone wrote stating the reason Ginny didn't make it as an adult actress is because she looked too ethnic. First of all I am not sure what that even means. Second of all I don't think she looked too ethnic or too anything. What I have always liked about Ginny is that she looked like a typical little girl and later like a typical teenager. She was cute, but not overly cute if you know what I mean. The camera liked her for sure, but more importantly she had talent. I just don't understand how MGM could let her go. I mean here was a young actress who proved she could "hold her own" with so of the greatest stars in the industry, e.g. Crawford, Davis, Hepburn and Garland. WOW, that really is something in my opinion. Someone mentioned this months ago, and I agree with them that Ginny would have been a prefect fit in the Warner Bros studio. However, sadly for us it just wasn't meant to be. It sounds like once she got out of show business she never looked back. I am not sure why that is unless she was so hurt by the way things turned out for her. That is a really cute picture you posted of her, in her sailor suit, here is another one I found. I think she looks really cute here with Mr.Taylor! Lori

Thank you ginnyfan for your comments on my post on John Garfield, and Jack Warner insisting on changing his first name (Jules) because it "sounded to Jewish." You wrote, "Garfield kind of lived GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT." Yes, I think he did at least from all reading and research I have done on him. He said of the role in Gentleman's Agreement, that he didn't act the part, he felt the part in every part of his body. I think he gave very dignified, quiet and powerful performance in that film, and when tells Peck's character, "That is where they get at you, through your kids. Well, you can stop being Jewish now, the is nothing else" I get chills. Someone wrote, that they almost could feel Kazan urging Garfield on in the film to "give a little more" in his performance. However, Garfield they felt was almost saying back to Kazan, back off, I knew you when, and I know how to play this character, I have lived this part. I do love the part in film where Garfield almost takes apart the drunk in the restraunt though. He had a lot of "moxie" for a little guy. ginnyfan, I am going over to your post on Ginny in the "died to young" thread to address, "the too ethnic" look someone wrote. Gloria Dickson died at the age of 27, in a fire at her home, very sad. *Judy Garland* died at the age of 47. How could I forget my Judy? Described by Fred Astaire as "the greatest entertainer who ever lived." She was and still is the youngest recipient (at 39 years of age) of the Cecil B DeMillie Award for lifetime achievement in the motion picture industry. In 1997, Garland was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Several of her recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 1999, the American Film Institute placed her among the ten greatest female stars in the history of American cinema. Addiction to drugs and alcohol was the ultimate cause of death for the great Judy Garland. Lori Edited by: Lori3 on Sep 7, 2012 2:17 AM

Actually Tom, then Flynn did "go quick." Blessing for him, and really a blessing the doctor couldn't bring him back. Just from that small photo you posted of Flynn he really didn't look like he was going to last much longer. Lori

Does religion get in the way of a star's career?
Lori3 replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
A lot of the stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood who were Jewish, had to down play that fact. When Garfield arrived at Warner Bros in 1938, the first thing Jack Warner told him is we have to change your first name, it sounds too Jewish. Garfield replied but you are Jewish too? Warner said, never mind there a lot of people out there who "think" they don't like Jews. So, Jacob Julius Garfinkle changed his name for the stage in New York to, Jules Garfield. Then Jules Garfield changed his name to John Garfield for Hollywood. Only two times in his film career did Garfield play a Jewish character. In Body and Soul, 1947 and in Gentleman's Agreement, 1947. At the end his full legal name was "John Jules Garfield." I am glad he kept the "Jules," of course all his life his family and close friends called him "Julie." When his second daughter Julie was born in 1946, he was then called "big" Julie and she was called "little" Julie. Very sweet I think. WOW Tom, Flynn looked so bad. I don't mean to be cruel but he could have been a "poster boy" of what addiction to alcohol does to you. His face also shows how powerful the disease of addiction is, and during my years in nursing I have seen many young people destroy their lives because of their addiction. Damn addiction is a very powerful disease. I think I read where Flynn did die of a heart attack, but he was revived for a little while in the doctor's office, but expired at the hospital or on the way to the hospital. John Hodiak is another actor who died young at the age of 41. He dropped dead while shaving in the bathroom, getting ready to go to the studio. People who die of the "big" one are lucky in away because they don't know what "hit them" and they don't suffer. What happens is the heart goes almost immediately in a eradicate rhythm, ventricular fib, which causes the person to lose consciousness and then unless their hearts are "shocked" back to a normal rhythm, they die. This is what most likely happened to Hodiak, Bing Crosby (he just dropped dead on a golf course) and Garfield in his sleep. The big one "hit" and there was equipment around or no one around to try and save them. You can sometimes bring the person back with a strong hit to their sternum (breastbone) with your fist. My mother died in her sleep and while it is a blessing really to go that way because there is no suffering, it is very hard on the family and friend because it comes as such a shock, and you have no time to prepare yourself for the loss. Thank you Sepiatone. Yes, I think John Garfield died young. Even in 1952 to die of a massive coronary at age 39 is pretty darn young. Of course he had suffered most of his adult life with that rheumatic heart, and with antibiotics only coming into play during WWII the damage was already done to Garfield's heart. I do believe however he could longer if he had taken better care of himself and had the attitude towards HUAC of " this too shall pass." Yet, I think the pain of seeing friends turn there back on him and being accused of being a harm to the country he loved so much was just to much for him to bare. I think he just had enough of the stress, the pain, the sleepless nights that he and his heart just gave up. I agree with Garfield's daughter Julie, when she said, "My father died more from a broken heart or attack on the heart, than from a heart attack." John Garfield left this earth at age 39 Bobby Darin is another victim of a rheumatic heart and he died at age 36! He during his life he was able to have heart surgery to replace his damaged heart valves. However, years later the doctors advised another surgery to replace one of the valves that wasn't functioning properly. Before surgery he had a dental procedure in which he knew he was suppose to take pre-procedure antibiotics but he did not take them. As a result he was in surgery for something like 4-5 hours, taken to the recovery room and died there. What a waste. I don't know why didn't to that simple but very important step of taking those damn antibiotics. Bobby Darin was a great talent, great singer. IMHO. Bobby Darin left this earth at age 36 Thanks Lori Edited by: Lori3 on Sep 6, 2012 6:00 PM

Fred, I don't know about that number you wrote, 98.735% have never heard of Bacall. My thought is that she is know by a lot more people and I would say she is quite an iconic star in her own right, then add Bogie into the mix and she becomes known by more people. I don't know how we could prove who is right or wrong here though. You could be right, but I kind of don't think so. Thanks Lori
-
araner1973, I really don't know what they should say. Like I wrote, I am not sure really why these "glowing" promos of the acting icons are starting to "bug" me but they are. Maybe it is that I don't feel these "tribute" type of promos of the SOTM, are not needed, maybe, I honestly don't know and I wish I did know. It is just my "feelings" my opinion. Any ways, I wanted to answer your question so you, "got a reaction." Lori
-
OK. I will say it right here, and let's see what type of reaction I get, if I get any reaction at all. While I admire Kelsey Grammar very much, and I can totally understand where he is coming from regarding Miss Bacall, I am getting a little tired of hearing all this stars going on about their " favorite" and how "great" everyone is. I am hearing the same thing over and over again regarding that special actor or actress. I mean they all seem to be saying the same thing like, "Just look at her face, his face during this scene. You can see the fear, anger, determination on their face, in their eyes" Now come on, every good actor should and does convey these and other emotions through their facial expressions and use of their eyes. Another thing I always seem to hear is, "There is such honestly in their performance." Again, all the greats, if they were great had to have "honesty" or that "real person" aspect to their character. That is (IMHO) a very important talent a actor or actress must have. They must have that believability in their performance or it just doesn't work. Lastly, the comment about the actor or actress's presence, that almost commands the audience to watch them is many times mentioned. Again, this is an very important trait all the greats have. It is what some refer to as "star magic." So there I wrote it. I am not sure really why these "glowing" promos of the acting icons are starting to "bug" me but they are. I know too, I am most probably in a very small minority in regards to my stated feelings. That really is what I am talking about, my feeling regarding these modern day actors going on and on about their favorites, telling us things we already know about that actor or actress. Again, as I stated at the beginning I respect Mr.Grammer, and understand his "feelings" about Miss. Bacall. She was a beauty, she commanded the attention of the camera and the audience, she won over Bogie, and she was a talented actress and is a icon now. However, really I already knew all that. Lori

Great pictures (at least I think so) kind of behind the scenes, of my favorite from the very under-rated "Force of Evil" 1948. A great film noir, IMHO. From "He Ran All The Way" 1951, John Garfield's last film. I think he did a outstanding job in it. As with his first role of Mickey Borden, in Four Daughters, 1938 and with his last role of Nick Robey in He Ran All The Way, he is playing the "enteral outsider" always looking in, wanting in, but not knowing how to get in. In a way his life was the same way towards the end. The once popular Hollywood star, now is on the outside thanks to HUAC and the blacklisting. He is looking into Hollywood trying to figure out how to get back in. Unfortunately his time ran out, before he could get back in. In many of his films Garfield he is "knocked down" but towards the end of the film he manaages to get up one more time. However, after being "knocked down" hard in his real life he just couldn't get up any more. The referee reached the 10 count and it was all over. Lori Edited by: Lori3 on Sep 5, 2012 3:31 AM

I think he should of won the Oscar for his performance in the film "The Green Mile" he was so good in that part. RIP Michael. Lori

I second what Dmallon wrote MovieProfessor. I always, I mean always, enjoy reading your posts. Your posts are so interesting, well written and I learn so much, it is just great. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, insight and "inside" Hollywood stories with us. You are much appreciated around here. Lori

I don't think you would expect to see John Garfield, Judy Garland, and Gloria DeHaven together, except maybe at the Hollywood Canteen.1944. I would of loved it if Garfield and Garland would have done a film together. My favorite actor and my favorite singer together! That would be heaven for me. Thanks Lori

GUILTY PLEASURES! (I don't care what they say, I love it!)
Lori3 replied to TomJH's topic in General Discussions
Another interesting thread Tom. One of my guilty pleasures is watching the MST3K guys. I don't care how blue, depressed or mad I might be, if I watch even just a few minutes of one those terrible B movies with the guys doing their thing on, I feel so much better! Crow T Robot is my favorite! If I could run a hospital I would have nothing but funny films for the patient to pick from. So if it is old "I Love Lucy" episodes that a patient finds funny or if it is the great "riffing" that the MST3K do, that causes someone to the laugh till they are almost crying I would schedule the patients to watch them. Works better than any anti-depressant around. I also enjoy (God knows why) those old (pretty bad) Sandra Dee movies. If TCM is selling certain DVDs is that film in their library?
Lori3 replied to Lori3's topic in Information, Please!
Yes markfp2. You answered my question. I thank you very much for taking the time to do so. I guess, then with out knowing if TCM has the rights to air a certain film, all I can do is list the film or films in the "Suggest a Movie" section and hope for the best? I know they (TCM) did air one of the films I am interested in being aired again, but that was probably at least 5-6 years ago. Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge with me. I appreciate it very much. Lori -
ginnyfan, I am glad someone has come to your rescue and you will be getting the film on DVD. I liked the film and Ginny did her usual good job in acting. She played well off of Warren Williams I thought. I have COMCAST too, and I also check to see what movies in the free section under TCM has available. Never once has there been one with my favorite in it, but that is no surprise to me. COMCAST does have some of his films that one has to pay to view, but I usually rent the films I want to watch. Lori
