  1. Yeah ginnyfan, I love that scene in the film too. He just "jumps all over" poor Fred! Garfield like most of the "tough guys" at Warner Bros was sort of on the short side, only 5'7! He had to learn to fight early in his life if he was going to survive the slums of New York during his youth. This is one of my favorite scenes in the film. No one (IMHO) could light a match with his thumb and toss it the way Garfield did, especially in this scene. Very cool! Just wish he didn't smoke cigarettes, very bad for his heart, but back then they didn't know any better. I wish he and Turner would have had the chance to make more films together. The were a great on screen couple together. I would give them an A in "on screen chemistry.". Much "hotter"couple than the newer version of TPART with Nicholson and Lange. I wouldn't have that 1981 version in my house. Thanks Lori
  2. I love it lydecker! Thank you for bring this to our attention. Lori
  3. Hello. Just another reminder of the special screening of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" 1946 at Max Bloom's Cafe Noir, in Fullerton California on August 28th at 7:30pm It promises to be a fun and entertaining evening with prizes, coffee drinks, treats and the viewing of a true noir classic film. (IMHO) The cafe is airing TPART in honor of John Garfield and my petition to finally get a box-set of his films made available for purchase. Support for the petition continues to come in from all over the world. Just this morning one supporter who added his name is from Denmark! *Here are a couple of comments that people wrote regarding the petition.* "John Garfield was one of the "best" actors during the Golden Age of Hollywood. His memory deserves a box-set at the very least. He was a powerful, yet natural actor, who would be a legend now if you hadn't had died so young. Please honor Garfield's talent, and do has this petition requests." "John Garfield was a consummate actor, a legendary star, who influenced countless actors of later generations. One only has to view his [work|http://www.thepetitionsite.com/778/073/466/give-star-recognition-back-to-a-legendary-star/|Powered by Text-Enhance] to be impressed by his talent, presence, and charisma. The blacklisting he got in the early 1950s was unjustified, and he deserves far more recognition than he receives today." I still need more names to make the petition successful. So please if you haven't yet added your name yet please consider to do so now. If you do not want your name to appear, there is a function on the site that allow on to do this. All that will show is "Name Not Displayed" and the state or country where you live. 4. Thanks ginnyfan for the picture and info. I hope heath of both Roger and Miss Hunt both hold. Lori
  5. My husband and I just finished watching Jesse James and enjoyed it very much. I want to know, does the real Jesse James really have grave marker that says, "shot in the back by coward, and etc, etc. whose name is not worthy to be mentioned here?" Lori
  6. Update on the voting and results. So far Fred Astaire has 3 votes to Kelly's 2 and Jerry the Mouse has 1. The question now is, "*Which dancer do you prefer, Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire?"* Right now the numbers are low, so no statically significance can be determined. Oh who really cares, you like or prefer who you do and that is just fine. They both were extremely talented men, who left was with beauty, grace, and thrills that will live forward on the silver screen. Thanks Lori
  7. Thanks ginnyfan. I would love to contribute a little but money is a little tight right now. Well I am happy this Roger is doing what he can to keep Marsha Hunt's name alive and I am glad she is alive to know there is someone out their "trying hard" to get her story told. She sure was a classy looking lady, even in her "older age" she looks classy and beautiful. I need to look up what Gene Kelly's widow is doing to kept his name and memory alive. She talked about it a little the other night, some type of "traveling Gene Kelly display" but with some modern computer like stuff throw in. Lori
  8. Thanks ginnyfan. That is a wonderful picture you posted. I knew she did a film with Gene Kelly but I can remember the name. I sure it was fairly early in his career, like in the early or mid 40s. I just found out to that she was, (not sure if she still is) on the adversary board for the Film Noir Foundation and it looks like she has been interviewed by the Film Noir Foundation for special screening of films. I will check out to see how her documentary is doing. She needs someone like you ginnyfan, or me to help promote the "needs" of her documentary, and to tell her story. I know what, lets start "Adopt a Forgotten Star" foundation. Ginnyfan and I already have our "adopted" forgotten stars, who is ready to adopt Miss Hunt? Thanks Lori
  9. Hello. I might be talking to myself here, or maybe I am jumping the "gun" as they say, but time will tell I guess. My issue is that I just checked out the TCM's shop site, and sure enough TCM is selling the remastered DVD and Blu-ray version of two excellent John Garfield films, Body and Soul (1947) and Force of Evil (1948). Both films were just released by Olive film at the end of July. Both films and their "star" have received numerous outstanding reviews by the today's critics. So why isn't TCM doing the "new on DVD" advertisements for these two films like to do with others DVDs or box-sets? I just don't understand this. They advertise ever other actors films, actors who are icons, and don't need the "press" if you will. I mean I love our iconic stars just as much as others do, but don't some of you think sometimes it would be fun and interesting to discover a forgotten actor or actress? (And there are many out there, Garfield is not the only one.) I know TCM has scheduled a John Garfield Tribute on September 19th, and God Bless them for that. It would be nice though if TCM could get a "modern day" actor to talk about John Garfield and his acting, like the do with Bette Davis and Ingrid Bergman, to name just two. I know there as a fairly "healthy" list of "today's" actors who are interesting in portraying Garfield in a film about his life, so can't TCM ask one them to do a little segment? If that won't work, ask his daughter Julie to talk about her father, like Gary Cooper's daughter talks about him. I am afraid that soon, the actor John Garfield will be forgotten completely, and noted only in the history of cinema books, unless his name and his films are discussed and promoted like the other actors of his era. The main goal of my petition, is to give back to John Garfield the "star recognition" that he lost years ago through a box-set of his finest films. However, if the box-set is not advertised and promoted it may be all be for not. If anyone is reading this, thanks for listening or I should say reading. Lori Body and Soul is considered the "Grand-daddy" of all boxing films. Many "film noir" groups think that "Force of Evil, is one of the best film noir's ever made. SO THERE!
  10. Tom those are great behind the scenes photos you posted, Thanks. The one from "The Birds" kind of freaked me out. Lori
  11. Here is a follow up picture to the one Tom posted. It looks like the tough guys got their "Ice Cream Sodas" after all. Hmmm looks good to me. B-) Lori
  12. finance, I think Kelly's first dramatic / non-dancing, non-singing role was "The Cross of Lorraine" 1943. Kelly is actually quite good in it. IMHO at least. Lori
  13. That is a neat story Janet0312. WOW to touch the pants that Gene Kelly worn. He was not tall, maybe 5'7. I met him at a Judy Garland tribute years ago, and I am 5'9 and I remember he was a few inches shorter than I. I also have a autographed picture from him, and years ago I use to get a Christmas card from him every year! I am sure I just somehow got on his Christmas card list, because I sent him a card after his house almost burned down, fire was caused my lights on a Christmas tree. His widow reminds me of Jamie Lee Curtis. Lori
  14. Much better UniversalHorror. Thank you very much. Lori P.S. I tried to go back and discard my first post of this picture, but it didn't work. SORRY. Edited by: Lori3 on Aug 24, 2012 12:09 AM
  15. Behind the scenes or a wardrobe test for John Garfield for the film "The Sea Wolf." I think TCM will be airing this film sometime next month. Part of the films at sea series or something like that. Lori Oh, I am sorry this picture is so huge! It looked like the normal size when I posted it. Oh, well you can get a close up view of things in the picture. Edited by: Lori3 on Aug 23, 2012 11:31 PM
  16. Hi buster1033. I know exactly how you feel. Gene Kelly was such an outstanding dancer and all around entertainer, he is an icon now I believe and beloved by many, including me. I am just surprised so few responses to a thread about Gene Kelly. Oh well. I think his widow is doing a very good job with RO. I find her charming and intelligent. I am glad she was there with Mr.Kelly in his later years. Lori
  17. mongo, here they are I found them. I hope it is ok that I copied this picture here, you are doing just a wonderful job, with all the pictures you post. I just thought I would have a little fun. Lori
  18. infinite 1, I completely understand what you mean. I just thought it would be an interesting question. Maybe I couldn't worded it better, e.g. Both Kelly and Astaire were great dancers, but who was your personal favorite? Like I wrote, I have seen this question, "who was the best dancer" on a few other websites, and I thought it might be interesting to see who people prefer here on this TCM message board. How about who was your personal favorite dancer in film? Lori
  19. Hi ValeskaSuratt. I am jumping in here just to put my two cents in, but I am sure the MovieProfessor will provide you with some great information. You wrote: "The definition of an actor is someone who'll stick it into anything." To me, it means that for those movie stars -- male *and* female -- to whom acclaim and even "idolatry" becomes a significant perk of their [career|http://forums.tcm.com/post%21reply.jspa?messageID=8672687#|Powered by Text-Enhance], the whole concept of sexual orientation goes out the window and the gender of their sex partners(s) is far less important than the ritualized meaning of the sex act: "you are loved." First of all I think the definition of an actor, would also apply to professional sports person, e.g. Baseball player or Pro Golfer, or really anyone who is famous and rich. Then with your last sentence. I think you mean to imply that actors and other famous people have sexual affairs because it makes them feel loved. You might be right but I am not sure it always works that way thought for the actor or other famous people. For example. I read once that Errol Flynn was sharing a sexual "score" he had made with a fan, to a younger actor. Flynn stated all during the act, the woman kept saying, "oh Errol Flynn, yes, yes Errol Flynn, etc, etc." Flynn seemed a little upset with the woman, especially when he realized that she wasn't making love or having sex with Errol, the real Errol but rather with the image or star of Errol Flynn. I don't think he felt any kind of love at that time. Make sense? It is also kind of like what Rita Hayworth once said, "Men fall in love with Gilda, but wake up with me." I think the one thing that might cause the actor or famous, rich person some pain is if they ever stop to wonder, if I wasn't famous or rich would this person be with me right now? Any ways, let see what the MovieProfessor has to say about all this. Thanks Lori
  20. Hi. I am a little shocked that no one has posted any thread here to wish Gene Kelly a "Happy Birthday." One-hundred years ago today, one of the greatest ever dancer was born! I saw this poll on another websites, and hopefully it hasn't been done here. If it has please forgive me and just ignore this. I am just interested in what everyone's opinions are. So here is the question: *You in your opinion was the better dancer, Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire?* My vote goes to Gene Kelly. I will keep track of the votes on an excel sheet and post the results in a week or two. OK? I know I should state why I consider Kelly the better dancer, I just don't have time right, but will explain my reasons later. So if you feel like it give us your argument as to why you consider either Kelly or Astaire the better dancer. Thanks Lori HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. KELLY! You were the best, and you and your films will never be forgotten. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. God Bless you and continue to rest in peace. Lori
  21. Thank you Tom for answering my question so completely. I can't remember seeing any of those films you mentioned, but I will keep my eyes opened so I catch one or two on TCM just to see what kind of actress she was. Lori
  22. Thank you MovieProfessor for answering my questions, you are wonderful! I think maybe I am not being fair to Mr. Brando, because I know I read somewhere that after his success either on Broadway with the play "A Street Car Named Desire" or maybe it was after the film, Garfield made some type of statement where he indicated that Brando has taken (Method) acting to a new and truthful area. So, I am sure Garfield admired Brando too. Thanks Lori
  23. Thanks for the info Tom and ginnyfan. I can't think of one film that Mayo Methot was in. Was she under contract and WBs too? Thanks Lori
  24. Hello mongo. Where is John Garfied? He was in the film, The Sea Wolf, and he was a member of the ships crew. Thanks Lori
  25. Thanks Mr.Blandings, I forgot all about Juarez. (How did that happen.) They were in that film together but no scenes together. Yes, it would have been very interesting to see how they would have worked together, with Garfield in the leading man role. Thanks Lori
